The Role Of Home Victimization In Preadolescents’ General Perceptions Of Trust, Abigail Seeman

Psychology Student Projects

The study explored the impact of home victimization on preadolescents’ general perceptions of trust. This exploration utilized extant data from the São Paulo Legal Socialization Study, a longitudinal study of 800 preadolescent participants who completed questionnaires assessing parental legitimacy, among other related factors. To assess the impact of home victimization on perceptions of trustworthiness, participants were split into two groups based on whether or not they had experienced assault by an adult in their home. Analysis revealed a statistically and practically significant difference across the groups regarding the belief that people care about others. This result indicated that the perception …

Home Victimization And Preadolescents' Parental And Police Trust, Ellie Jarosinski, Brooke Welch

Celebration of Scholarship 2022

This study explored relationships between preadolescents’ perceived trust in parents and police and between home victimization and trust. It utilized extant data from a longitudinal study conducted in São Paulo, Brazil, in which 800 participants completed questionnaires assessing parental legitimacy. Analysis revealed significant relationships between trust in parents and police, although most correlations were weak. Results indicated a positive relationship between trust in parents and police, while home victimization was negatively related to trust. This negative relationship yields implications for preadolescent health and safety and broadens the literature on trust and impacts of victimization. Future studies could incorporate non-self-report measures, …

The Effect Of The Big Five Personality Traits On The Perceived Restorativeness Of Zondervan Library Spaces, James Brads, Luke Slater, Laura Mcclelland

Faculty-Mentored Undergraduate Scholarship

The current research aims explored which personalities experience differences in restorativeness in the Zondervan Library on the Taylor University campus. Through analysis of 302 surveys from Taylor undergraduates, we found that highly agreeable and open individuals typically see environments as more restorative. Individuals who score highly in Agreeableness and Openness see the library as a more restorative environment than those who score lower in these two domains. Agreeableness was the single best predictor of restorativeness on the first floor of the library, while the second floor of the library had two best predictors: Agreeableness and Openness.

The Impact Of Childhood Abuse On Moral Development, Shayla Stogsdill Apr 2019

The Impact Of Childhood Abuse On Moral Development, Shayla Stogsdill

Orphans and Vulnerable Children Student Projects

Moral development is a topic which has little research to accompany it. Although there is a lack of understanding of where and how children develop morals, there is clear evidence to support that abuse in any form against a child will impact the way they learn morality. Children who experience abuse will face the physical, emotional, and mental impacts which will all contribute to the way they develop. Children also learn behaviors and ideas from caretakers and when those who are supposed to protect them do not, children will become disordered on the ideas of right and wrong. Childhood is …

Don't Shoot: Race-Based Trauma And Police Brutality, Leah Metzger

Orphans and Vulnerable Children Student Projects

With the growing conversation on police brutality against black Americans, there is an increasing need to understand the consequences this has on black children. Research is now showing that children and adults can experience race-based trauma, which can have profound effects on psychological and physical well-being, and can also impact communities as a whole. The threat and experience of police brutality and discrimination can be experienced individually or vicariously, and traumatic symptoms can vary depending on the individual. Children are especially vulnerable to the psychological and physical effects of police brutality and the threat thereof because of their developmental stages. …
