Bariatric surgery is the most effective long-term treatment for severe obesity. Although bariatric surgery results in significant weight loss for many patients, variability exists in expectations surrounding postoperative outcomes. Therefore, this study examined two psychosocial factors that may contribute to variability in weight loss expectations among adults seeking bariatric surgery: affective disorders and locus of control. Obesity is a major health issue in the United States. More than two thirds of the adult population is considered to be either overweight or obese. It is the fifth leading cause of mortality in the world, with 3.4 million deaths a year. Obesity is associated with numerous medical and psychological comorbidities.
