Perceptions Of Happiness Through The Lens Of Age And Gender, Alea Farmer

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This paper intends to examine the possible relationship between demographic variables and perceptions of happiness. The demographic variables being studied are age and gender. Perceptions of happiness are measured by the Conceptions of Happiness Scale (Joshanloo, 2018) and represent one’s overall idea of happiness. A survey was distributed to adults that were recruited via social media and flyer recruitment on the campus of Lindenwood University. The survey consisted of demographic questions as well as the Conceptions of Happiness Scale (Joshanloo, 2018) for participants to complete. Initial hypotheses predicted differences in perceptions of happiness amongst different age and gender groups. However, …

A primary problem with the current criminal justice system in the United States is that it almost solely relies on a jury to determine whether a defendant is guilty or not guilty of committing a crime. While this system has been in place for many years, it is flawed because it ignores the fact that people tend to make judgments based on extralegal factors, or variables that are not related to a case, which may lead them to have implicit biases toward or against an alleged offender. Previous findings indicate that extralegal factors that impact juries include gender, race and …

The Effects Of A Relationship Status On Views Of The Opposite Sex, Taylor L. Cathey

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

It is human nature to notice those around us, and size them up by our own set of standards. This includes taking a measure of physical appearance and attractiveness. However, there are several factors that affect our perceptions of the world around us, and especially the people whom we see. Emotional states and a variety of emotions, play a strong role in dictating our behaviors and reactions (Most, Laurenceau, Graber, Belcher, & Smith, 2010). One factor that changes our human lives is the presence of romance. Intimacy, passion, and commitment are components associated with romance and relationships that take a …

General Perceptions Of Homosexuality In A Small Private University In The Greater Saint Louis Area, Verenna Huerta, Taylor Morrill

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Homosexuality has long been a major topic of concern among political, social, and religious agendas. Societies have either labeled homosexuality as deviant or non-deviant behavior. This type of categorization has lead to many negative assumptions about those who hold a different type of sexual orientation other than heterosexual. According to Pachankis and Goldfried, (2008, p. 3), “Gay male undergraduate students reported a higher fear of negative evaluation and greater social interaction anxiety than did heterosexual students.” Students in educational systems who are homosexual, bisexual, lesbian, or transgendered often battle with peer evaluation. The knowledge of students’ perceptions, attitudes, and comfort …

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

A statistical analysis conducted by the United States Department of Justice stated that from 1976 to 2002, a surprisingly large number of murders committed were intra-racial, rather than inter-racial. The results claimed that 86% of Caucasian murder victims were killed by other Caucasians, and 94% of African American victims were killed by other African Americans. The present study was conducted to see if the average person perceives interracial crime to be more of a threat. Thirty-seven participants were given the task of assigning photographs of men from the two most prominent ethnic groups in the United States to various negative …

People Perception: The Effects Of Facial Piercings, Sarah Torpea

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The research hypothesis of this study is that subjects will have a more negative perception of models with facial piercings than models without. There were 35 subjects surveyed. Each subject looked at 15 pictures of people between the ages of 19 and 21 years. There were 11 filler pictures and four model pictures in each survey. The subject answered questions that helped them to rate these people on different positive and negative scales. The models were shown with no facial piercing, a fake lip piercing, a fake nose piercing or both a fake lip and nose piercing. The same models …
