Prediction of future performance is attempted in almost every field of endeavor. The accuracy varies in different lines of study, and perhaps none is as subject to variability as those attempted with human beings as subjects.
When an attempt is made to ascertain in advance the performance of college students in their schoolwork, a multiplicity of complicating problems are introduced. Whereas intelligence can be fairly well isolated, it is difficult to control or even enumerated all the other factors that come into the problem of predicting grades from scores received on an intelligence examination. The strength and growth of vocabulary is one or the decisive factors in successful college work. Educators find it helpful to evaluate not only the general vocabulary ability of the college student, but also the more specialized directions which the development of the student 's vocabulary may take.
The author's interest in this problem grew out of the results obtained with freshmen in the Westhampton College orientation program in September 1948. In working up the data from 119 freshmen 's scores on the Michigan Vocabulary Profile Test, results were such as to arouse interest in analysis of freshmen performance on …

Since 1920 the Commonwealth 0£ Virginia bas had an organized Civilian Vocational Rehabilitation Program, having enacted the legislation creating the Service. a few weeks prior to the passage of the Federal Act in June of that year. A national consciousness of tho crippled and disabled had been awakened following World War I which culminated in the Veteran Rehabilitation Act. While still attempting to decide on a topic for a thesis study, the author was asked, "How far from the up- ports of a continuous-bean reinforced-concrete bridge should the reinforcing for negative moment extend into the spany." It was a simple question, and the reason for it being asked was that a particular structure, the one shown in the frontispiece, had developed transverse cracks in the surface of the deck structure a distance of three and a half feet from the center of both interior supports.
