Impact Of Treatment On Body Image In Obese Children, Danusia Nedilskyj
Impact Of Treatment On Body Image In Obese Children, Danusia Nedilskyj
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Pediatric obesity is a national epidemic with serious medical implications. Currently, almost one-quarter of children in the United States are overweight. Without intervention, children typically are unable to outgrow obesity and the majority of overweight children become overweight adults. Further, childhood obesity results in numerous psychological consequences, including dissatisfaction with body image. Thus, prevention and treatment of childhood obesity are crucial to protect children from the resultant physical and psychological risk factors which will impact their future health. The Growing Fit Program is a pediatric clinic in the Department of Pediatrics at Loma Linda University, which seeks to serve the …
Efficacy Of Cognitive Therapy And Pharmacotherapy In Depression: A Meta-Analysis, Daniel B. Michel
Efficacy Of Cognitive Therapy And Pharmacotherapy In Depression: A Meta-Analysis, Daniel B. Michel
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A meta-analysis comparing the long-term effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy in preventing relapse following treatment discontinuation was performed using published studies of depressed participants. Twenty-three articles met inclusionary criteria and were included in the analyses. Weighted effect sizes and moderators, treatment type, were calculated using statistical analysis software. Initially, fixed effects models were applied to the data, but due to significant between-group heterogeneity that could not be fully explained by treatment type, mixed effect models were used to account for the residual heterogeneity. Results indicated that overall, depressed individuals treated to remission with CBT evidence decreased relapse …
Association Of Controllability, Depression, And Symptoms In Fibromyalgia Patients, Benjamin P. Rose
Association Of Controllability, Depression, And Symptoms In Fibromyalgia Patients, Benjamin P. Rose
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study attempted to understand the role of controllability and learned helplessness in the experience of Fibromyalgia (FMS) patients. The study was crosssectional and correlational and examined the relationships between controllability, learned helplessness, depression, and somatic/retarded activity. The study concluded controllability and learned helplessness were associated with depression and could also predict depression. In addition, the study showed that learned helplessness was associated and could predict somatic/retarded activity in FMS patients.
Validation Of The Mspss For Improving Outcomes Of Patients, Garrett G. Chesley
Validation Of The Mspss For Improving Outcomes Of Patients, Garrett G. Chesley
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Aim: About 30% of patients who enter psychotherapies are deteriorated. Statistical methods have been developed that allow for the identification of “at-risk” cases. Clinical support tools can be offered as a problem solving strategy to maximize treatment response and minimize deterioration.
One support tool, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) has been characterized as easy to use and effective with adequate psychometric properties. However, very few studies have explored its concurrent validity. The goal of this proposal is to assess the psychometric properties of the MSPSS to validate it for clinical use.
Methods: Two groups (a nonclinical group …
Predictors Of Emotional Reactions In Women Treated For Breast Cancer, Erin E. Ramirez
Predictors Of Emotional Reactions In Women Treated For Breast Cancer, Erin E. Ramirez
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Breast cancer can be a devastating disease that impacts a woman in all spheres of her life (Ingram, 1989). Previous studies have examined the impact of breast cancer on body satisfaction, as well as the impact on emotional well-being. Studies have also examined the role of the coping style that a woman engages in response to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in the woman's psychological adjustment to the disease. However, to date, no research has introduced and tested a multifaceted model.
The purpose of this study was to develop a model predicting psychological maladjustment in women treated for …
Longitudinal Evaluation Of Nonreligious Coping, Religious Coping, Health, And Distress, Richelin R. Veluz
Longitudinal Evaluation Of Nonreligious Coping, Religious Coping, Health, And Distress, Richelin R. Veluz
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The problem-focused/emotion-focused coping distinction has been widely accepted since Lazarus and Folkman first defined this model in the 1980's. However, some researchers have criticized this distinction; for example, while problem-focused coping involved engaging strategies, emotion-focused coping involved engaging and avoidant strategies. Tobin et al. recognized this inconsistency and suggested that a better way to define coping was through engagement/disengagement. A separate but related development in the coping field involves defining types of religious coping. Researchers have only recently recognized the role of religion as individuals deal with stressful events. For example, with a retrospective methodology, Pargament et al. found religious …
A Model For Preventing Anorexia In College Students, Laura Ann Negin
A Model For Preventing Anorexia In College Students, Laura Ann Negin
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The prevalence of anorexia nervosa in the general population is relatively low, but anorexia is at the forefront of health concerns because of its seriousness. Unhealthy weight loss has numerous physical, psychological, and social consequences. Most seriously, the mortality rate for people with eating disorders is the highest of all the major psychiatric disorders.
This dissertation presents a model for preventing anorexia nervosa in a population of college students that includes a comprehensive institutional approach, psychoeducational software, a high-risk population, a holistic approach that identifies an individual’s personal risk factors and protective factors, and individual therapy.
The model is built …
Religious Coping And Depression In Home Care Patients, Kirsten Ingheim
Religious Coping And Depression In Home Care Patients, Kirsten Ingheim
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study examined the impact of a medical illness in 36 elderly male and female home health care patients with a primary diagnosis of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and how they coped with their medical condition. Relationships between depression and religious coping, functional status, quality of life, and depression, as well as relationship between functional status and quality of life were investigated. In addition, a moderating effect of the relationship between functional status and depression by religious coping was explored. The participants completed the Religious Problem-Solving Scale (RPSS) (Collaborative, Deferring, and Self-Directing), the SF-12 …
Behavioral Compliance And Verbal Intelligence In Children, Jared Jackson
Behavioral Compliance And Verbal Intelligence In Children, Jared Jackson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Compliance with parental requests is an important developmental task necessary in the socialization of children. The majority of research has focused on the relationship between child compliance and variables related to age, parental interactions, and child temperament. While these variables account for almost half of the variance related to compliance in children, there is still a large amount of variance unaccounted for. An area that has not been fully explored is the role of verbal intelligence in behavioral compliance of children. This study explored the contributions that verbal intelligence may play in the behavioral compliance of children. Results from this …
Children With Autism: Sleep Problems And Predictors Of Maternal Stress, Cindy Y. Nam
Children With Autism: Sleep Problems And Predictors Of Maternal Stress, Cindy Y. Nam
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Research examining the impact of children’s autism and the sleep problems frequently associated with the disorder on parents’ stress has been quite limited. Studies have been constrained by methodological problems, including small sample sizes and the examination of children of autism within larger groups of children with a range of developmental disabilities. Typically, diagnostic criteria used to select children for an autism study is not indicated and no measure of the severity of children’s symptomology is included. The present investigation was designed to examine children’s autism symptomology and parents’ reports of their children’s sleep problems as well as the parents …

Predictors Of Female Sexual Dysfunction, Julie M. Merrell
Predictors Of Female Sexual Dysfunction, Julie M. Merrell
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Tiefer, Hall, and Tavris (2002) described factors comprising four categories of female sexual dysfunction. They suggested that unique factors need to be examined to understand sexual dysfunction in women. Socio-cultural, political, or economic factors, partner and relationship factors, psychological factors, and medical factors described as aspects of women’s lives that can be the source of sexual dysfunction. The current study examined indicators of the above factors-body shame, relationship satisfaction, sexual self-schema, positive and negative affect, and overall health-as predictors of female sexual dysfunction. The hypotheses were: Body shame and negative affect will be negatively associated with sexual function; and relationship …
Electromagnetic Differences In The Brain During Memory Retrieval, Warren Scott Merrifield
Electromagnetic Differences In The Brain During Memory Retrieval, Warren Scott Merrifield
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The primary objectives for this experiment were to analyze the neuroanatomical correlates of autobiographical, episodic and semantic memory, use a different paradigm to promote episodic memory retrieval, and employ a different analysis technique to understand retrieval processes. Autobiographical and episodic memories are personal memories from the past. Autobiographical is more general (e.g. a street name of a house growing up) and episodic is more specific to time (e.g. 13th birthday party that took place on a street). For autobiographical and episodic memory retrieval operations, there is no general consensus as to the localization of function, but bilateral activation of the …
The Effects Of Communication On Adolescent Sexual Behavior In Eastern Europe, Sharon Mieras Perugini
The Effects Of Communication On Adolescent Sexual Behavior In Eastern Europe, Sharon Mieras Perugini
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
HIV/AIDS rates have continued to rise in Eastern Europe where adolescents are particularly vulnerable. The theory of reasoned action (TRA) has successfully been applied to understanding adolescent sexual risk behavior and provides a theoretical framework for the prevention of HIV/AIDS. According to TRA, attitudes and subjective norms predict behaviors via the mediating role of intentions, and in order to have an impact on behavior, changes must occur at the attitude and subjective norm level. Because parents have been found to influence their children's attitudes, subjective norms, and intentions, the moderating effects of parent communication on sexual risk behavior of adolescents …
Emotional Stroop Effects: Eating Disorders And Obesity, Kristy Anne Kuehfuss
Emotional Stroop Effects: Eating Disorders And Obesity, Kristy Anne Kuehfuss
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study addresses the effects of emotional valence on selective processing of body-shape related words in young women who suffer from anorexia, bulimia, or obesity, and non-clinical controls. Research in the area of emotional Stroop interference has indicated that persons with eating disorders, particularly anorectics, show elevated latencies in naming colors of words related to food or body-shape, in contrast to either neutral words, or to non-clinical control groups. One intriguing issue regarding the emotional Stroop interference among various clinical populations relates to the question of whether the interference is due to the emotionality of the relevant words or to …
Physiological Responding In A Two-Dimensional Social Interaction Simulation, Sean Brannon
Physiological Responding In A Two-Dimensional Social Interaction Simulation, Sean Brannon
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Although there were no observed effects, several suggestions were made to inform researchers in designing a study of fluid interaction. With the increasing usage of computers in the conduct of research, there is ample evidence to suggest that some emotional or physiological responses may be reliably measured using two-dimensional computer simulations.
It was predicted in accordance with the previous aggression literature that when the participant was in the role of aggressor that autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses would decrease as a function of concentration or cognitive load. It was also predicted that when the participant was in the role of …
The Relations Of Pain, Religious Coping, And Depression In Fibromyalgia Patients, Derek O. Bacchus
The Relations Of Pain, Religious Coping, And Depression In Fibromyalgia Patients, Derek O. Bacchus
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study attempted to examine the relationship between Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) pain, religious coping, and depression. The Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), RCOPE, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) were used to assess these constructs in 50 participants. The sample was primarily middle aged and female, which is typical of the FMS population. This study used multiple regression to make assumptions about the causal progression of the variables. Study findings show that religious coping does not appear to significantly mediate the strong relationship between FMS pain and depression. This research served to uncover …
Female Patients’ Perspectives On The Stages Of Eating Disorder Recovery, Cherish C. Knoll
Female Patients’ Perspectives On The Stages Of Eating Disorder Recovery, Cherish C. Knoll
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Eating disorders are severe psychiatric disorders that most commonly begin in the female population during adolescence and across ethnicity (Lucas, 2004). However, the face of eating disorders is changing as they become more apparent across cultures and lifespan, impacting both young and aging women as well as males. In the past few decades progress has been made in the diagnostic, treatment, and recovery phases of eating disorders. These gains have contributed to a better understanding of eating disorders, assisting in the decrease of mortality and morbidity rates seen in eating disorder patients. Nevertheless, there are significant challenges that still remain …
Binge Eating, Emotion Regulation, And Cognitive Resources, Jennifer A. Tucker
Binge Eating, Emotion Regulation, And Cognitive Resources, Jennifer A. Tucker
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Research has shown that individuals with binge eating disorder (BED) have difficulty coping with negative emotions, although no research to date has directly investigated emotion regulation and binge eating. In the current study individuals with varying amounts of BED characteristics were measured for accuracy on a computerized task involving attention and working memory. Subsequent to the task, participants were given three self-report measures: the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDEQ-I; Fairbum & Celio, 2004), the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS; Watson, Clark & Tellgen, 1988), and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ; Gross & John, 2003). It was hypothesized that in …
