Does How One Uses Mindfulness Meditation Matter? : An Experimental Evaluation Of The Acute Impact Of Mindfulness In A Control Vs. Acceptance Context On Anxious Arousal In A Non-Clinical Sample, Eric Daniel Tifft Jan 2020

Does How One Uses Mindfulness Meditation Matter? : An Experimental Evaluation Of The Acute Impact Of Mindfulness In A Control Vs. Acceptance Context On Anxious Arousal In A Non-Clinical Sample, Eric Daniel Tifft

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Mindfulness meditation has existed in Eastern cultures for thousands of years; nonetheless, its introduction to Western society and psychological science is a recent development. Numerous psychosocial interventions now include mindfulness practice as a core therapeutic intervention. Increasingly, mindfulness and other meditative practices are being promoted within popular culture as strategies to regulate stress, anxiety, and other unpleasant emotional or psychological events. Yet, using mindfulness to regulate and control unwanted private experiences is antithetical to the original intended purpose of such strategies, namely, to observe, welcome and accept private experiences just as they are. Research in emotion regulation and thought suppression …

An Expansion Of A Model Of Depression In Multiple Sclerosis : Emotion Regulation And Coping As Moderators Of The Relationship Between Functional Disability And Adjustment To Disease, Elizabeth W. Raffanello Jan 2019

An Expansion Of A Model Of Depression In Multiple Sclerosis : Emotion Regulation And Coping As Moderators Of The Relationship Between Functional Disability And Adjustment To Disease, Elizabeth W. Raffanello

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediate disease affecting the central nervous system (CNS), producing a range of physical and emotional symptoms. Psychological disorders, particularly depression and anxiety, are common in MS, but only partially accounted for by MS symptoms. The associations between common MS sequelae (e.g., fatigue, pain, disability) and mental health indicators are weak and inconsistent, suggesting the presence of moderators. This research study examined two possible moderators of the association between MS sequelae and adjustment to disease: emotion regulation and coping. Emotion regulation refers to the processes used to modulate emotional experiences. It is closely related to coping, …

Interactive Effects Of Family Stability, Emotion Regulation, And Community Violence Exposure On Depressive Symptoms, Rae Drach Jan 2018

Interactive Effects Of Family Stability, Emotion Regulation, And Community Violence Exposure On Depressive Symptoms, Rae Drach

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Family stability is an important contributor to children’s development and adjustment. The current study examines how emotion regulation and community violence exposure may jointly moderate the relationship between family stability and depressive symptoms within youth from a high-risk (e.g., low-income, high crime) community. Participants (N = 49) completed self-report questionnaires assessing their stability of family activities, use of different emotion regulation strategies, exposure to community violence, and experience of depressive symptoms. Results indicated a significant three-way interaction among family stability, emotion regulation, and community violence exposure in accounting for depressive symptoms. Greater family stability generally predicted fewer depressive symptoms; however, …

Cravings And Gestational Weight Gain : Predictors Of Weight-Related Health In Pregnancy And The Postpartum, Natalia Christine Orloff Jan 2018

Cravings And Gestational Weight Gain : Predictors Of Weight-Related Health In Pregnancy And The Postpartum, Natalia Christine Orloff

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

More than half of all pregnancies result in excess gestational weight gain (GWG), which is one of the most common high-risk obstetric conditions and is associated with health complications in the mother and the fetus. We have conceptualized excess GWG within the Elaboration Intrusion framework and developed studies to test this theory and identify predictors of excess GWG. These studies sought to 1) establish the appropriateness of existing measures related to the constructs of the EI Theory, 2) establish a causal effect of food craving on excess GWG, 3) examine the role of knowledge as a predictor in excess GWG, …

The Influence Of Self-Control On Creative Cognition, Christa Larai Taylor Jan 2018

The Influence Of Self-Control On Creative Cognition, Christa Larai Taylor

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Two studies were conducted to investigate how ego-depletion influences performance on two frequently used indicators of creative cognition: divergent thinking and insight problem solving. In the first study, participants (N= 152) were randomly assigned to one of six conditions, based on a depletion (ego-depletion vs. control vs. difficult, non-depletion) x task instruction (creativity vs. fluency) design. After completing a well-established ego-depletion procedure (i.e., re-typing a paragraph without using the letter “e” or the spacebar vs. re-typing it as one normally would or completing moderately difficult math problems), participants completed three AUTs (asking them to generate uses for a brick, paperclip, …

Depletion Awareness And Self Control Performance, Tina L. Donaldson Jan 2017

Depletion Awareness And Self Control Performance, Tina L. Donaldson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The current study examined whether awareness of ego depletion had an effect on subsequent tasks requiring self-control. It is possible, that with awareness of depletion, one may be able to make corrections in their behavior to counteract the effects of reduced self-control. The primary question this research set out to answer was whether awareness of depletion would significantly increase or decrease self-control performance. Participants underwent a depletion manipulation to diminish their self-control strength. Next the participants completed a false feedback assessment of self-control, ostensibly designed to measure their level of self-control strength. Participants then received feedback as to whether they …

The Right Approach To Success : Approach And Avoidance Motivation In Anticipatory Self-Control, Ellen O'Malley Jan 2017

The Right Approach To Success : Approach And Avoidance Motivation In Anticipatory Self-Control, Ellen O'Malley

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Self-control success often requires considerable effort in moments of temptation. The current research examines the effectiveness of self-control strategies based on individual differences in self-regulatory motivation. Although self-control appears to come easier to those who are avoidance-motivated rather than approach-motivated, this may be due to the conditions under which self-control is needed and tested. Specifically, the temporal context of an anticipated selfcontrol conflict (i.e., if it is near or distant) may be more instrumental for approach-motivated self-regulation relative to avoidance-motivated self-regulation. Three studies test the temporal and motivational conditions under which participants successfully pursue self-control goals. Results suggest that anticipatory …

Craving In Substance And Behavioral Addiction : The Role Of Emotion Regulation, Natalia Christine Orloff Jan 2016

Craving In Substance And Behavioral Addiction : The Role Of Emotion Regulation, Natalia Christine Orloff

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Individuals with emotion regulation difficulties lack the strategies to monitor and evaluate the emotional experience, often leading to an increase in efforts to constrict or conceal the emotional expression. Deficits in emotion regulation are associated with an increase in craving for risky behaviors, such as alcohol and internet use. Non-acceptance and impulse control are two domains of emotion regulation that have been linked to behavioral and substance cravings. What remains to be elucidated is whether these relationships are mediated by strategies employed to control the emotional experience. The current study aims to identify whether thought suppression mediates the relationship between …

Does Ego-Depletion Impair The Ability To Identify A Self-Control Conflict?, Jeffrey M. Osgood Jan 2016

Does Ego-Depletion Impair The Ability To Identify A Self-Control Conflict?, Jeffrey M. Osgood

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Research from the past fifteen years suggests that strong exertions of self-control in one instance cause self-control failure in subsequent instances. This phenomenon is called the “ego-depletion effect”. More recently, new theoretical and empirical advances in self-control research suggest a Two-Stage Model of self-control. During Stage One, individuals must identify the need to use self-control by recognizing a conflict between their current behavior and long-term goals, values, or social standards. In Stage Two, individuals must implement self-control strategies or willpower to bring current behavior in line with long-term goals, values, or social standards. To date, ego-depletion research has focused mostly …

Public And Private Goal Commitment : Self-Control And Choice, Rebekah L. Layton Jan 2014

Public And Private Goal Commitment : Self-Control And Choice, Rebekah L. Layton

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Public precommitment to a goal may drive goal achievement. This work explores the effects of public precommitment on goal achievement using the limited-resource model of self-control. Goal commitment which alters future choices available by inflicting a self-imposed cost for giving up is called precommitment. Public commitment to a goal can be viewed as precommitment by imposing a social cost for failure (e.g., anticipated embarrassment). This may facilitate goal pursuit through two processes: First, by shifting the cost earlier in the process via the structural route in which goal-setting processes may deplete self-control resources initially (Studies 1 and 2), while improving …

Investigating The Main Effects And Interactions Of Induced Mood And Emotional Urgency On Self-Report Cannabis Craving And Consumption, Joseph Anthony De Leo Jan 2013

Investigating The Main Effects And Interactions Of Induced Mood And Emotional Urgency On Self-Report Cannabis Craving And Consumption, Joseph Anthony De Leo

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The current research investigates the role of induced mood states and emotional urgency - a mood-based facet of impulsivity, on cannabis use behaviors. Specifically, this research aims to extend previous work linking impulsivity and substance use behaviors by examining the relation of `emotional urgency' on cannabis craving and consumption.

Unwanted And Out Of Control : The Role Of Rejection Sensitivity And The Inhibition Of Rejection In The Depletion Of Self-Control, Jennifer L. Perella Jan 2013

Unwanted And Out Of Control : The Role Of Rejection Sensitivity And The Inhibition Of Rejection In The Depletion Of Self-Control, Jennifer L. Perella

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Self-regulation, also referred to as self-control, has been defined as one's capacity to override, interrupt, and otherwise alter one's responses. According to the strength model of self-control, self-regulatory resources are limited; exerting effort on one task leads to decreased performance on a subsequent task requiring self-control, or depletion of one's self-regulation capacity. Self-control depletion has been the focus of much research in the past decade as lack of self-control has been implicated in many maladaptive interpersonal behaviors such as aggression and decreased helping behaviors. Previous research has demonstrated that being rejected is one way that one's self-regulatory resources can be …

The Influence Of Molecular Family Stability On Emotion Regulation And Adjustment, Jennifer Weil Malatras Jan 2012

The Influence Of Molecular Family Stability On Emotion Regulation And Adjustment, Jennifer Weil Malatras

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Previous research has demonstrated a relationship between the constructs of family stability and adjustment and has provided evidence for a model in which self-regulatory behavior, namely self-control, mediates the relationship between family stability and adjustment. The present study is intended to expand upon that line of research, evaluating the mediational role of emotion regulation in the relationship between family stability and adjustment. Specifically, it was hypothesized that emotion regulation would mediate the relationship between molecular family stability and internalizing and externalizing problems. Participants were emerging adults between the ages of 18 and 21 years and were asked to complete measures …

Emotion And Self-Control : Self-Control Limits Emotional Extremes, Rebekah L. Layton Jan 2011

Emotion And Self-Control : Self-Control Limits Emotional Extremes, Rebekah L. Layton

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

One function of self-control is to inhibit inappropriate expressions of emotions to facilitate interpersonal interactions; however, self-control may predispose one to over generalize limitations of one's emotional response rather than solely in contexts in which emotional regulation is needed. The current study examined the effects of trait self-control on emotional fluctuations and emotional intensity to determine whether high self-control may be associated with diminished emotional experience. Undergraduate students (N = 298) participated in three experiments designed to evaluate the impact of self-control on emotional experience, as measured by self-report questionnaire and responses to emotionally evocative video clips using a continuous …

Self-Regulatory Decisions As A Function Of Goal-Performance Discrepancy And Self-Efficacy : A Time To Revise And A Time To Exert, Levi Alexander Boren Jan 2011

Self-Regulatory Decisions As A Function Of Goal-Performance Discrepancy And Self-Efficacy : A Time To Revise And A Time To Exert, Levi Alexander Boren

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The present research proposed that self-regulatory decisions, goal revision and resource allocation are primarily a function of performance discrepancy and self-efficacy. Further, it was proposed that in multiple-goal environments, allocation decisions would be a function of the motivational variables related to concurrent goals. Two studies were conducted, one in the laboratory and the other in a field setting to test hypotheses related to these propositions. Findings from both studies demonstrated that the performance discrepancy X self-efficacy interaction is a key determinant of self-regulatory decisions. In multiple goal environments, relative measures of self-efficacy, performance-discrepancy, and goal commitment were predictive whereas absolute …

Self-Control Conservation : A Closer Look At The Underlying Process, Nicholas Allegretti Freeman Jan 2010

Self-Control Conservation : A Closer Look At The Underlying Process, Nicholas Allegretti Freeman

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Preliminary evidence suggests that when individuals believe that they will have to exert self-control in the near future, their performance on an intervening self-control task suffers so that limited self-control resources are conserved for later use (Muraven, Shmueli, & Burkley, 2006). The current research sought to further clarify the extent to which beliefs about the limited nature of self-control contribute to this conservation effect. Specifically, it is unclear whether simply recognizing that a task requires self-control is enough to prompt individuals to approach the task with a conservation strategy, or, if conservation strategies are only pursued in reaction to resources …
