Properties Of Curriculum-Based Measurement For Mathematics : An Investigation Of The Average Growth, Variability, And Precision Of Three Forms, Arianna Doss Dec 2021

Properties Of Curriculum-Based Measurement For Mathematics : An Investigation Of The Average Growth, Variability, And Precision Of Three Forms, Arianna Doss

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

CBM for mathematics assesses growth in accuracy and fluency of basic math skills using content from a student’s curriculum. CBM for mathematics can include single-skill measures (SSM), skill-based measures (SBM), and general-outcome measures (GOM). Past research on growth rates in CBM for mathematics has focused on GOMs and has relied on estimations of weekly growth rates, but more information on expected growth rates and their precision for these measures is needed for practice. The current study addresses this gap in the literature by examining weekly growth rates and their precision for one SSM containing multiplication problems, one SBM containing addition …

A Cross Cultural Comparison Of Asian College Students' Well-Being : Exploring The Impact Of Cultural Factors In A Social Cognitive Framework, Jennifer Joy Bordon Jan 2021

A Cross Cultural Comparison Of Asian College Students' Well-Being : Exploring The Impact Of Cultural Factors In A Social Cognitive Framework, Jennifer Joy Bordon

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study tested the cross-cultural validity of a modified version of Lent and Brown’s (2006, 2008) satisfaction model. Hypothesized predictors and mediators included social-cognitive variables (supports, self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and goal progress), personality variables (extraversion and emotional stability), self-construal variables (interdependence and independence), as well as a variable that is specifically rooted in Asian culture (i.e., academic family shame). Data of 315 Asian American and 260 Singaporean college students were collected using an online survey in English. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) techniques, showing satisfactory fit of the modified model for both samples. For the Asian American …

Predictors Of Teacher-Rated Academic Competence In A Clinic Sample Of Children With And Without Autism Spectrum Disorder, Anna Milgramm Jan 2019

Predictors Of Teacher-Rated Academic Competence In A Clinic Sample Of Children With And Without Autism Spectrum Disorder, Anna Milgramm

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The rising prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), both in the general population and within the classroom, necessitates a greater understanding of the academic experience of diagnosed children. Prior studies that have examined academic competence in children with ASD have largely relied on clinician-administered tests of achievement. The present study extends previous work by investigating several predictors of teacher-rated academic competence among a sample of elementary school-aged children. All children in the sample were referred for an ASD evaluation and approximately half received the diagnosis. With the exception of assertion, teachers did not perceive differences between the social skills, problem …

The Long-Term Consequences Of Adolescents' Comparative Economic Position In School, Kiwoong Park Jan 2019

The Long-Term Consequences Of Adolescents' Comparative Economic Position In School, Kiwoong Park

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The goal of this dissertation project is to investigate how adolescents’ comparative socioeconomic positions within their schools shape their short- and long-term outcomes, including later health, educational expectations and attainment, and the risk of having a nonmarital first birth. Although social comparison theory posits that individual well-being depends on the standings of others with whom one compares oneself, as well as on one’s own absolute standing, the empirical evidence of the theory has been mixed and controversial. This project argues that inconsistent findings may arise from difficulty in measuring reference groups, temporal ambiguity between exposures and outcomes, and methodological limitations.

The Role Of Stressors And Academic Competence In Adolescent Depression By Race, Ishani Ravindra Deo Jan 2016

The Role Of Stressors And Academic Competence In Adolescent Depression By Race, Ishani Ravindra Deo

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether adolescents’ perceptions of academic competence serve as a mediator of the relationship between various kinds of stressful experiences and depression symptoms. Additionally, we hypothesized that the utility of this model would change with adolescents’ race. Methods: The sample consisted of 260 adolescents, approximately half of whom were African American (N = 141) and half of whom were European American (N = 119). Measures were administered to participants at a single time point via in-school questionnaires, and the resulting data were analyzed both for mediation and with moderated path analyses. Results: …

Identity Compatibility, Career Adaptability, And Adaptive Coping As Predictors Of College Women's Commitment In Stem Majors, Michelle Murray Jan 2015

Identity Compatibility, Career Adaptability, And Adaptive Coping As Predictors Of College Women's Commitment In Stem Majors, Michelle Murray

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The ‘leaky pipeline’ is a metaphor often used to describe the progressive and persistent phenomenon that occurs when women who have initially planned on pursuing STEM careers drop out before a career is established (Cronin & Roger, 1999). Women pursuing STEM occupations often receive messages that they do not belong or are not expected to succeed in the field, which can negatively impact one’s academic performance, increase psychological stress, and influence one’s persistence within a field of study (Steele & Aronson, 1995; London, Downey, Bolger & Velilla, 2005). Using career construction theory (Savickas, 2013) as a framework, the current study …

The Relationship Of Disability Status On Attendance, Behavior, And Achievement Indicators For Students Receiving Intensive School-Based Mental Health Counseling, Meghan Morris Deyoe Jan 2015

The Relationship Of Disability Status On Attendance, Behavior, And Achievement Indicators For Students Receiving Intensive School-Based Mental Health Counseling, Meghan Morris Deyoe

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This causal comparative study investigated the relationship of an identified disability (IDEA declared vs. non-declared) on success outcomes for sixth through twelfth grade at-risk students enrolled in a school-based mental health program. Outcome variables included: selected attendance, behavior, and achievement indicators for students who were enrolled in and received intensive school-based counseling.

Work And School Experiences Of Employed Students, So Jung Kim Jan 2015

Work And School Experiences Of Employed Students, So Jung Kim

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Based on role theory (Katz & Kahn, 1978) and conservation of resources theory (Hobfoll, 1989), work-school domain conflicts – both work-school conflict (WSC) and school-work conflict (SWC) – among employed students were studied. Job supervisor and instructor interactional justice and various role demands (i.e., surface acting and academic demands) were examined as antecedents of work-school domain conflicts, whereas GPA and task performance were examined as consequences. Participants were 109 college students who were working at least 10 hours per week. The results suggest that only academic demands were an antecedent of SWC and task performance was the only consequence of …
