Parenting Stress And Language Development In Children: Associations In Angelman Syndrome And Down Syndrome, Annalise Bland, Zainab Husain, Breanna Martin-O'Dell, Sarah Gronceski
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
One of the defining characteristics of neurogenetic syndromes such as Angelman syndrome (AS) and Down syndrome (DS) is delayed language development. Although it is commonly reported that parenting stress is associated with language development, these associations have not been widely studied in AS and DS despite other research showing elevated stress levels in the parents of these children. To fi ll this gap in research, the present study examined how parenting stress relates to language production in children with AS and DS. Daylong recordings were obtained from 72 participants using a Language Environment Analysis recording device, which was then processed …
Raising Awareness And Empowering Diverse Survivors: Addressing Mental And Physical Health Needs Among Lgbtqia+ Community Members Post-Sexual Assault, Daniel W. Oesterle, Leah Giorgini, Christopher Eckhardt
Raising Awareness And Empowering Diverse Survivors: Addressing Mental And Physical Health Needs Among Lgbtqia+ Community Members Post-Sexual Assault, Daniel W. Oesterle, Leah Giorgini, Christopher Eckhardt
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
Experiences of sexual violence are commonplace among individuals within the LGBTQIA+ communities, with more than 63% of sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals experiencing victimization. Despite high rates of victimization, few individuals experiencing sexual assault seek services post-assault, with even fewer individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community accessing post-assault care. This is further exacerbated when considering the unmet treatment needs of sexual assault survivors and victims, where individuals commonly experience high rates of internalizing (i.e., post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety) and externalizing (i.e., substance use/misuse) symptoms for years after experiencing an assault. Although these experiences occur at alarming rates on college …
Demographic Characteristics Of Individuals Who Abuse Animals: A Systematic Review, Lisa Emmett, Nina Kasacek, Birgit Ursula Stetina
Demographic Characteristics Of Individuals Who Abuse Animals: A Systematic Review, Lisa Emmett, Nina Kasacek, Birgit Ursula Stetina
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
The purpose of the following review is to evaluate current literature on animal abuse including animal hoarding and zoophilia to identify demographic characteristics of adults who abuse animals. The review was conducted by using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) Checklist 2009 (Moher et al., 2010). As the body of this research is still limited there were no restrictions regarding the level of evidence of studies made. A total of 40 studies met the selection criteria and were included in the review. The present review’s main findings suggest that animal hoarders are mostly female and between …
Human- Animal Interaction To Support Well- Being At University: Experiences Of Undergraduate Students In The Uk, Aliya Khalid, Anne Rogers, Emily Vicary, Helen Brooks
Human- Animal Interaction To Support Well- Being At University: Experiences Of Undergraduate Students In The Uk, Aliya Khalid, Anne Rogers, Emily Vicary, Helen Brooks
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
In the context of increasing concerns about student mental health and the therapeutic value of companion animals for mental health, there is limited understanding of the potential contribution of human- animal interaction in relation to undergraduate well- being. This study aimed to develop an in- depth understanding of the meaning and well- being roles attributed to human- animal interactions by undergraduate students in the UK. Using a qualitative research design, semistructured interviews were conducted with 60 students aged be-tween 18 to 23 years at a UK university of whom 39 implicated the role of companion animals in their well- being …

Sustaining Continuous Improvement In Public Sector Services Through Double Loop Learning, Chris Buckell Msc, Mairi Macintyre Assoc. Prof.
International Conference on Lean Six Sigma
Abstract
Purpose: Public Service Organisations (PSOs) are facing continuing funding challenges and increased pressure to maintain and improve service delivery with fewer resources. One response, with the promise of improving efficiency rather than cutting services, has been to implement Continuous Improvement (CI) but success has been sporadic and unpredictable. The well documented and pervasive CI methodologies in PSOs, including Lean and Six Sigma, have general agreement across practitioners and scholars alike, thus the reasons behind their potted success must lie elsewhere, in the culture or the environment perhaps? This work explores the wider contextual issues of CI implementation with the …

Visitor (Tourist) Harassment Research: Delphi Panels, Shweta Singh, Annmarie Nicely, Liping Cai, Jonathan Day
Visitor Harassment Research Unit Special Papers
The harassment of visitors at destinations is a pressing problem globally. It is also an emerging area of scholastic inquiry. This article explores one research technique that, despite its ability to generate new and innovative solutions to a range of problems, is not currently used in visitor harassment (VH) research: the Delphi Panel Research Method. The authors assert, if applied correctly, the technique could significantly advance knowledge in this research stream. The article also explores the technique’s evolution; the broad thoughts on which the technique is based; when the technique should be used; how the technique should be applied; …

Animal-Assisted Interventions: Relationship Between Standards And Qualifications, Greta Kerulo, Niko Kargas, Daniel S. Mills, Graham Law, Rise Vanfleet, Tracie Faa-Thompson, Melissa Y. Winkle
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Ethical practice of animal- assisted interventions (AAI) requires appropriate qualifications and experience for all parties involved. Recently introduced and updated Standards of Practice emphasize the importance of AAI- specific training and qualification for different types of AAI, which should only be delivered within the scope of one’s professional competence. The purpose of this study was (1) to explore how a self- selected group of practitioners delivering AAI describe their work in relation to recent attempts to develop a terminological consensus (IAHAIO, 2014, 2018), and (2) to describe how AAI best practice recommendations (AAII, 2018) are implemented into professional practice among …
