The COVID-19 pandemic has substantially altered daily life around the world, resulting in significant impacts on health behaviors. The additional burdens imposed by family caregiving (i.e., providing unpaid care for children and/or adults) may further exacerbate negative effects of the pandemic on health and health behaviors, including increased alcohol consumption, poor sleep, and increased depressive symptoms. The current study examined this possibility. Participants (N = 320, mean age = 35.11 years) completed an online questionnaire assessing alcohol use, sleep, and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic (June–August 2020) and retrospectively assessed the same health behaviors in the months prior to the …

This article, collaboratively written by the presidents of the National Latina/o Psychological Association (NLPA), presents leadership as conceptualized and practiced in NLPA. We first identify key leadership constructs in the available literature as well as relevant cultural values, describe liderazgo (leadership) through cultural lenses, and articulate the connections to counseling psychology and the social justice underpinnings that have guided NLPA’s formation and development. We then present a number of events and decisions to illustrate how we have operationalized these organizing principles in both the daily management and long-term goals of NLPA. We conclude with a discussion of the future paths …

The present article employed a sample of 365 families of children in foster care to conduct a validation test of a newly developed instrument, the Parent Child Checklist (PCC). The PCC is a 54-item direct observation measure assessing parent–child interactions in the context of a family session. The PCC was developed to support the effective implementation of an evidence-based intervention, Parent Management Training-Oregon model, in the Kansas child welfare system. The PCC was designed to capture two scales of child behavior (prosocial and problem behavior) and five parenting domains (encouragement, positive involvement, problem solving, communication skill, and effective discipline). Cultural Adaptations To Psychotherapy: Real World Applications, Shahana Koslofsky, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez

Psychology Faculty Publications

This special issue was born of a series of challenges. As a scholar in the field of cultural adaptations, Domenech Rodríguez had presented and published numerous works, which were met with particular excitement from practitioners hoping to gain insights into how to translate research findings into their diverse clinical practices. When asked “how can I make these cultural adaptations with my clients?” her honest answer was, “I am not sure.” The question posed a wonderful challenge to make research relevant in the real world. How could we take the lessons learned from cultural adaptations conducted as part of grant-funded work …

Improving Information Retention In The Medical Classroom By The Innovative Application Of The Cognitive Load Theory, David Talford, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez

Psychology Faculty Publications

PowerPoint, created in 1987, is now ubiquitous in medical classrooms around the world. PowerPoint is typically utilized with students reading large amounts of written information, and simultaneously hearing verbalization of the same information. The theory of cognitive load, pioneered in the 1980s by Professor John Sweller, indicates that the human brain processes and retains more information if it is digested in either its verbal or written form, but not both at the same time. Yet; simultaneous presentation of verbal and written information is the pedagogical strategy often utilized in today’s medical classroom. An innovative pedagogical strategy is implemented and studied. …

Enhancing Parenting Practices With Latino/A Immigrants: Integrating Evidence-Based Knowledge And Culture According To The Voices Of Latino/A Parents, José Rubén Parra-Cardona, Gabriela López-Zerón, Monica Villa, Efraín Zamudio, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez

Effective and emotionally nurturing parenting practices constitute salient protective factors in the lives of children and youth. Although social workers have influenced in important ways the scholarship associated with the development and dissemination of culturally relevant evidence-based parenting interventions for underserved populations, low-income ethnic minorities continue to lack access to culturally relevant and efficacious parenting interventions in the United States due to widespread mental health disparities. Addressing this gap in service delivery is necessary, particularly because populations exposed to historical oppression and intense contextual adversity are at an increased risk for engaging in harsh parenting practices. The purpose of this …

Psi Chi Journal Editorial Transition, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez, Debi Brannan

Psychology Faculty Publications

As I write these lines, Psi Chi Journal of Psychological Research has fully transitioned to the editorial stewardship of Dr. Debi Brannan. It is a bittersweet time; I treasured deeply the tasks of editing the Psi Chi Journal. For nearly 5 years, I benefitted from reading cutting-edge research in broad topics across psychology. I was inspired by the knowledge that most of the authors were up-and-coming researchers whose sense of efficacy could be nurtured through a positive publication experience. I reveled in the beauty of watching undergraduate and graduate researchers shine, faculty mentors nurture our next generation of researchers, and …

With advances in knowledge regarding efficacious evidence-based interventions, there have been significant attempts to culturally adapt, implement, and disseminate parent training interventions broadly, especially across ethnic and cultural groups. We sought to examine the extent to which researchers and developers of evidence-based parent training programs have used cultural adaptation models, tested implementation strategies, and evaluated implementation outcomes when integrating the interventions into routine care by conducting a systematic review of the literature for four evidence-based parent training interventions: Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), The Incredible Years (IY), Parent Management Training-Oregon Model (PMTO™), and the Positive Parenting Program (Triple P). A total …

The success of scientific journals is measured by many markers, among them, whether or not they are indexed in well-known databases. Our Journal was already indexed in EBSCO Academic Search Complete, which has over 13,690 journals and content dating to 1887 (EBSCO, 2014). Now, I am excited to say that Psi Chi Journal of Psychological Research is also listed in PsycINFO, which has nearly 2,500 journals and coverage dating back to 1597 (APA, 2014). The process of being considered for indexing in PsycINFO included a careful review of a year's worth of issues for high-quality content considered of interest to …

Guidance For Reviewers: Observations After A Year As Editor, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez

Reviewers are at the heart of the Psi Chi Journal of Psychological Research (PCJ). If not for their service, the journal quality would be seriously compromised as would its mission to support the educational and professional development of authors. Reviewers provide an expert evaluation for authors and the journal editor. Through this evaluation the authors learn to strengthen their skills as researchers by specifically receiving feedback on the content of their scholarly arguments, the applicability and accuracy of the methods chosen, and the implications of their work. Reviewers also provide important guidance to the journal editor, also a scientist, who …
