Can Deliberative Democracy Work In Hierarchical Organizations?, Jason Pierce, Grant Neeley, Jeffrey Budziak Jan 2016

Can Deliberative Democracy Work In Hierarchical Organizations?, Jason Pierce, Grant Neeley, Jeffrey Budziak

Grant W. Neeley

Some measure of equality is necessary for deliberative democracy to work well, yet empirical scholarship consistently points to the deleterious effect that hierarchy and inequalities of epistemological authority have on deliberation. This article tests whether real-world deliberative forums can overcome these challenges. Contrary to skeptics, it concludes that the act of deliberation itself and the presence of trained moderators ameliorate inequalities of epistemological authority, thus rendering deliberative democracy possible, even within hierarchical organizations.

Equitable Sharing: Distributing The Benefits And Detriments Of Democratic Society, Thomas Kleven Jul 2015

Equitable Sharing: Distributing The Benefits And Detriments Of Democratic Society, Thomas Kleven

Thomas Kleven

The book argues that a principle of equitable sharing is fundamental to the concept of democracy and to the democratic society the United States purports to be. It examines the political philosophies of John Locke, John Stuart Mill, and John Rawls, all of which contain a principle of equitable sharing in some form. It then examines the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, both of which evidence a commitment to equitable sharing as foundational to the democratic society they contemplate. The book argues that the Supreme Court also has a meaningful role to play in the dialogue over the requirements …

Rawlsian Political Analysis : Rethinking The Microfoundations Of Social Science, Paul Clements Feb 2014

Rawlsian Political Analysis : Rethinking The Microfoundations Of Social Science, Paul Clements

Paul Clements

In Rawlsian Political Analysis: Rethinking the Microfoundations of Social Science,Paul Clements develops a new, morally grounded model of political and social analysis as a critique of and improvement on both neoclassical economics and rational choice theory. What if practical reason is based not only on interests and ideas of the good, as these theories have it, but also on principles and sentiments of right? The answer, Clements argues, requires a radical reorientation of social science from the idea of interests to the idea of social justice.

Mapping The Relationship Between International Sport And Diplomacy, Stuart Murray, Geoffrey Pigman Nov 2013

Mapping The Relationship Between International Sport And Diplomacy, Stuart Murray, Geoffrey Pigman

Stuart Murray

To date, the relationship between diplomacy and international sport has been relatively under-theorized. This paper seeks to redress the deficiency by proposing an analytical taxonomy of the multiple convergences between international sport and diplomacy. The principal analytical distinction to be drawn is between (1) international sport consciously employed by governments as an instrument of diplomacy and (2) international-sport-as-diplomacy, the diplomatic representation, communication and negotiation between non-state actors that take place as a result of ongoing international sporting competition.

By increasing understanding of the rôles of sport in diplomacy and diplomacy in sport, the paper seeks to promote the adoption of …

Australian Defence Force Transformation: The Hardened And Networked Army, Stuart Murray Sep 2013

Australian Defence Force Transformation: The Hardened And Networked Army, Stuart Murray

Stuart Murray

Extract:
In the field of international relations there exists controversy over whether or not a Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA) is occurring. This case employs the recent transformation of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to validate the 'revolution' argument. As Australia's role in the Asia Pacific security environment grows, there is a correlative need for its military to evolve. The ADF has embraced change, primarily through its Future Warfighting Concept (FWC) and the doctrine of a Hardened and Networked Army (HNA).

Open For Business: Australian Uranium For Sale!, Stuart Murray

Stuart Murray

Extract:
Fossil fuels negatively contribute to global warming and climate change. While the short-term impact of nuclear energy is more positive, it is no less controversial in terms of climate change. According to the Director of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamed El Baradei, investing in nuclear energy technologies is particularly attractive to developing countries where energy demand outstrips energy supply and 'energy security, air pollution and greenhouse gases are priorities' (IAEA 2006). Nuclear weapons proliferation, and environmental safety, however, remain as global concerns. As a result, nuclear energy technologies and uranium exports to fuel that technology continue to attract …

Falling Through The Cracks: Superfluous Women At The Fault Lines Of Citizenship, Sovereignty, And Human Rights, Emma Norman Dec 2011

Falling Through The Cracks: Superfluous Women At The Fault Lines Of Citizenship, Sovereignty, And Human Rights, Emma Norman

Emma R. Norman

This chapter attempts to cross conceptual borders by exploring some of the political theory that underpins the transforming concept and practice of citizenship in the North American region today—especially as it is articulated for and by women (or not). I consider several challenges to traditional views of citizenship that are being prompted by the transnational, deterritorializing processes associated with globalization. While I argue that such reconceptualizations are being obstructed in practice by reterritorializing processes in North America in the wake of 9/11 and a host of other perceived challenges to state sovereignty, my central concern is that post- or trans-national …

Games Without Frontiers?: Democratic Engagement, Agonistic Pluralism, And The Question Of Exclusion, Robert W. Glover Dec 2011

Games Without Frontiers?: Democratic Engagement, Agonistic Pluralism, And The Question Of Exclusion, Robert W. Glover

Robert W. Glover

In recent years a growing number of democratic theorists have proposed ways to increase citizen engagement, while channeling those democratic energies in positive directions and away from systematic marginalization, exclusion and intolerance. One novel answer is provided by a strain of democratic theory known as agonistic pluralism, which valorizes adversarial engagement and recognizes the marginalizing tendencies implicit in drives to consensus and stability. However, the divergences between competing variants of agonistic pluralism remain largely underdeveloped or unrecognized. In this article, I address this shortcoming, examining these strains of agonism around the constraints placed upon democratic discourse. I argue that the …

The Twitter Effect, Caitlin Byrne Jul 2011

The Twitter Effect, Caitlin Byrne

Caitlin Byrne

Extract: In its short history, Twitter-the latest social networking phenomenon-has emerged from within the boundaries of political oppression as a potential enabler of human rights. A product of Western culture. Twitter's relevance to human rights rests in liberal political theory. In particular, Twitter gives effect to first generation human rights, articulated by the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR) in 1948, and subsequently codified in international law by the UN's International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) in 1966. The potential of Twitter presents both serious challenges and opportunities for advancing human rights, which this case explores in …

Radically Rethinking Citizenship: Disaggregation, Agonistic Pluralism, And The Politics Of Immigration In The United States, Robert W. Glover Dec 2010

Radically Rethinking Citizenship: Disaggregation, Agonistic Pluralism, And The Politics Of Immigration In The United States, Robert W. Glover

Robert W. Glover

The status of citizenship and the rights extended to non-citizens are among the most contentious and hotly-debated political issues in numerous Western polities. Some scholars, most notably Seyla Benhabib, have deemed the contemporary changes a ‘disaggregation of rights claims’, in which the interplay between ideals of particularism and universalism lead to an ‘unbundling’ of civil, political, and social rights with formal national membership. Yet this theoretical framing harbors deficiencies which complicate our understanding of the contemporary politics of immigration. In this piece, I critically examine this account to show both its theoretical shortcomings and the incomplete explanations to which these …
