Civil Society: Agent Of Change In Egypt, Ola Kubbara

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Civil society in Egypt is a very important factor that determines the development of the process of democratization, as well as the political and social stability of the state. The role of civil society, the degree of its autonomy or its repression, reflects on all aspects of political, social and economic spheres. The lagging democracy and the augmented level of social repression and stagnation in Egypt, is due to the weakness of civil society. …

E-Governance In Egypt: A New Methodology To Poverty Reduction, Shahdan Mahmoud Niazi

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The aim of the thesis is to examine if the e-governance initiative in Egypt can contribute to poverty reduction. The study utilizes people-centered indicators by employing Sen's "capability approach" where Sen shifts from the traditional understanding of poverty as derivative of insufficient resources to a new perspective which incorporates the lack of capabilities and opportunities into the definition of the term. The thesis concludes that IT is not the determinant cure that can transform the mode of governance within the government sector in a way that can contribute to poverty alleviation. The transformation of the governance mode for enhanced human …

Refugee Assistance And The Impediments To Self Reliance, Mai Ahmed Helmy Mahmoud

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Development from below has become an increasingly important theme in

development planning since the 1970s. Indigenous knowledge is an important element in development from below and its importance lies mainly in what it says about the power of people to control the changes they experience. It is from there that 'Participatory Development' as a field came to gain much attention lately. In participatory projects, it is important that the beneficiaries of these projects be involved in the decision making process as to what the nature of these projects will be and how they will be implemented, and that they be …

A Study Of The Impact Of The Government's Policies And Regulations On Micro And Small Enterprises In Egypt, Zeinab Awad

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Since the mid - 1970s the promotion of private sector development and free trade has been identified by the Egyptian government, academics and the international development community as the most ideal path for achieving sustainable development, growth and prosperity. This in turn has increased awareness of the importance of Micro and Small Enterprises (M/SEs), and their potential as one of the most viable engines for growth. As a consequence, providing M/SEs with incentives and removing the obstacles that inhibit their growth have been identified among the priority areas for government intervention. This thesis argues that in spite of the extensive …

The integrated development approach incorporating the socio-cultural perspective has been used in strategies and plans to combat Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting in Egypt. The human rights based approach has been used to a much lesser extent. Several studies conducted recommended that it would not be appropriate to use the human rights based approach to tackle a culturally sensitive issue like FGM/C. This thesis research conducted in-depth qualitative interviewing to find recommendations for ways to introduce the human rights based approach to combat FGM/C in Egypt.

This paper aims to clarify that Egypt's financial liberalization will have a positive effect on economic development. This …

The Localization Of The Western Globalization Discourse In Egypt, Mohamed Waked Feb 2004

The Localization Of The Western Globalization Discourse In Egypt, Mohamed Waked

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the 'localization' of globalization discourse in Egypt by following its rise in the United States to its reception by various local knowledge structures in Egypt. It argues that the main characteristics of the discourse show that it represents a new phase of an old colonial narrative, in operation at least since the introduction of modernization theories. The thesis finds little structural novelty in globalization knowledge, as the discourse structurally resembles older paradigms of modernization in ideas, assumptions, and analytical methodologies. As such, even though it is portrayed as a discovery of a new knowledge paradigm, it represents …

The Judges Club Of Egypt: A Space For Defending Democracy And The Independence Of The Judiciary, Atef Shahat Said

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the Judges Club of Egypt [JCE] between January 1985 and March 2004. My research demonstrates that Egyptian judges rely on the JCE as a space for defending democratic reform and the independence of the Judiciary in Egypt. I will argue that while several laws and internal regulations within the Egyptian judicial structure forbid judges from being involved in any political activity, Egyptian judges craft strategic discursive mechanisms for expanding the role of the JCE beyond its seemingly confined function within the court. This thesis suggests that the JCE is a â meta-spaceâ [neither NGO nor officially part …
