Capital punishment has been present for the entirety of American history. Despite this, there have been active supporters for the abolition of the death penalty in the United States since the early 1960’s. Considering the growing importance of the individual state’s participation on the global stage, including the effects of globalization, international law, and human rights standards, the European Union’s capital punishment policy may have an increasing influence over Supreme Court’s interpretations of the constitutionality of capital punishment.
