Against The Tide: Indigenous Knowledge And Education For Humanization, Arturo Rodriguez, Kevin Russel Magill Sep 2023

Against The Tide: Indigenous Knowledge And Education For Humanization, Arturo Rodriguez, Kevin Russel Magill

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

Power brokers and their market economies enforce education on a global level. According to the United Nations, the effects of global neoliberal capitalism cause human rights violations in all parts of the world, yet democratic countries scoff at these findings (Pogge, 2002 & 2005). People of the world continue to believe that tying minoritized students to existing structures and ensuring enculturation is the best possible outcome for all involved (Suárez-Orozco & Suárez-Orozco, 2015). That is, minoritized children are educated to ensure first-world countries produce a minimally educated and willing labor force. In this paper we argue the following: 1) power …

Terrorism And Right-Wing Extremism: History And Comparative Definitions, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako, Caleb Grant Hill Jul 2020

Terrorism And Right-Wing Extremism: History And Comparative Definitions, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako, Caleb Grant Hill

Faculty Publications

Recent narratives on terrorism have focused on the definitions. Terrorism is not a new phenomenon, but the problem resides in its definition and who is defining it. Conceptualizing terrorism depends on which framework one utilizes. The use of different lenses to define the term has contributed to the lack of global acceptance of what constitutes terrorism, hence the difficulty of gathering data for analysis. It is also a conundrum when powerful nations legitimize their terrorist activities against weaker ones. This, unfortunately, has led to the subjectiveness of every attempt in the literature to objectively provide a globally acceptable definition. Using …

The Affirmative Action Policy: A Tale Of Two Nations And The Implementation Conundrum, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako Jul 2017

The Affirmative Action Policy: A Tale Of Two Nations And The Implementation Conundrum, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako

Faculty Publications

The enforcement of affirmative action programs such as quotas has not only generated endless debate in many countries but has also encountered resistance from those, usually conservatives, who question the fairness of such a program or policy. Brazil and the United States of America are two of the destinations for enslaved people of African descent who were, on their arrival to their new countries, treated as second-class citizens and had to endure institutional, political, and legalized structural racism and discrimination in high education. This paper provides some of the definitions of affirmative action found in the literature and discusses the …

The Escalation Of Trump Stormfront And The 2016 Election, Dianne Dentice Apr 2017

The Escalation Of Trump Stormfront And The 2016 Election, Dianne Dentice

Symposium on Arts and Research

Since David Duke ran for public office and was elected to the Louisiana state legislature in 1989, leaders of the far political right have been trying to gain a foothold in mainstream electoral politics. In a campaign tinged with populist rhetoric, Donald Trump emerged victorious in the 2016 election. What does this mean for the American white nationalist movement?

Rethinking Utopianism, International Relations Theory, And Marginalization Of Africa In Global Politics, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako Jul 2014

Rethinking Utopianism, International Relations Theory, And Marginalization Of Africa In Global Politics, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako

Faculty Publications

Many studies on utopianism tend to critique known political models such as capitalism, democracy, socialism, and dictatorship. While none of these models provide a perfect political environment, utopianism seems to be the answer to prevent all political abuses. From public administration point of view, the harmonious co-existence of all political models without any interference may help to conceptualise a potential change in our current hostile global political environment and limit the marginalisation of other societies as presented in the international relations literature. Modernisation theories, debatably, have assumed that the principles of modern political administration will become more important than other …

Fighting For The Right To Be White: A Case Study In White Racial Identity, Dianne Dentice, David Bugg Jan 2014

Fighting For The Right To Be White: A Case Study In White Racial Identity, Dianne Dentice, David Bugg

Faculty Publications

Membership in extremist groups, such as White Revolution and the Ku Klux Klan, embody specific behavioral attributes. These attributes include practicing endogamy and exhibiting racial pride. There is general consensus among members as to what it means to be part of a socially constructed extremist group. There are also strong motivational factors that support maintaining in-group solidarity and dominant status. By adhering to the rules dictated by group membership, both the self and the group are uplifted based on white racial identity. The process of self-categorization for white racial activists accentuates their own physical similarities along with perceived negative physical …

Is Hamas A Religious Terrorist Group?, Megan Flemming Apr 2012

Is Hamas A Religious Terrorist Group?, Megan Flemming

Undergraduate Research Conference

In 2004 the Palestinian terrorist group, Hamas, took part in municipal elections and since then they have continued to gain more political influence. Because of the recent political activity of Hamas it is relevant to revaluate Bruce Hoffman's assertion that Hamas is a religious terrorist group. By using the same three criteria that Hoffman used originally, (use of violence, the intended audience, and self perception) and comparing them to the current actions of Hamas it is evident that Hoffman is no longer correct and that Hamas should now be classified as a secular terrorist group. Categorizing the group correctly is …

Traditional Chinese Philosophy In China’S Modern International Relations, R Philip Reynolds May 2011

Traditional Chinese Philosophy In China’S Modern International Relations, R Philip Reynolds

Librarian and Staff Publications

Since gaining power in 2002 Hu Jianto and long-time ally Premier Wen Jiabao have been digging deep into the Communist-Chinese canon as well as ancient Confucian, and other traditional philosophical themes and practices to articulate President Hu Jianto’s foreign policy message “the Three Harmonies”. This message of the peaceful rise of China rang hollow in the ears of many politicians and analysts. (Lam 2006) Was Hu Jianto a leader who based his foreign policy on traditional Chinese philosophies such as Confucianism, or is China’s foreign relations ; as Richard Bernstein and Ross Munro put it “driven by nationalist sentiment, a …

Women Leadership And Political Power In Lating America: A Focus On Argentina, Jazi Hiriart Apr 2011

Women Leadership And Political Power In Lating America: A Focus On Argentina, Jazi Hiriart

Undergraduate Research Conference

As is the trend in the rest of the world, women have historically been seriously under represented in leadership and political positions in Latin America. This situation hinders not only representation but democracy, political equality, and justice. An investigation of the specific historical, social, and political problems women face in order to gain political power aids in fully understanding this issue.

Argentina yields a series of lessons that are worth highlighting, as they have helped to buck this trend.

Public Administration: Local Government And Decentralization In Ghana, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako Oct 2010

Public Administration: Local Government And Decentralization In Ghana, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako

Faculty Publications

Public administration as an art is defined in the Ghanaian context regarding decentralization and public officials’ accountability. It examines decentralization, local elections and empowerment. While the paper advocates for regional and district level elections, it uses the literature to argue that local representatives are more accessible to their locals. It questions the current appointment practices by the central government, which has become more partisan than originally intended in the Local Government Act. To affirm the democratic environment of politics in Ghana, it calls for constitutional amendment regarding decentralization and local government elections.

Defining International Terrorism: Historical Reality And The African Experience, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako Jul 2010

Defining International Terrorism: Historical Reality And The African Experience, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako

Faculty Publications

Violence is terror and terror is violence. Liberators, freedom fighters, revolutionaries and terrorists have all become labels of convenience. Terrorism, historically, has been institutionalized by some governments to their advantage. Academicians and politicians fail to agree on the issues surrounding terrorism hence defining terrorism has become an academic puzzle. The ambiguity in its definition has also contributed to lack of any universal comprehensive acceptable theory. The literature on terrorism by and large accused weaker nations of supporting terrorism. This paper argues otherwise by using the African experience, slavery and colonization, to question the literature on terrorism. Nations throughout history have …

Pakistan’S Nuclear Weapons Program And Implications For Us National Security., Michael Tkacik Jan 2010

Pakistan’S Nuclear Weapons Program And Implications For Us National Security., Michael Tkacik

Faculty Publications

This article analyzes Pakistan’s nuclear weapons program and the characteristics of the environment in which the program is nested. These characteristics include Pakistan’s history of internal and external instability; nuclear saber rattling during crises; support for Islamic terrorism in order to advance state goals; indigenous production of many elements of its nuclear forces; possession of delivery and command and control systems with destabilizing characteristics; and finally, nuclear doctrine that appears to advocate first use of nuclear weapons. The article argues that the characteristics of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons program generate threats to US national security interests. The article examines six interrelated …

Administrative Decentralization: Should Districts And Regions Elect Their Own Leaders In Ghana?, Kwame Badu Antwi-Boasiako

Faculty Publications

Decentralization, leadership accountability, and empowerment of local leaders in Ghana are the main focus of this analysis. The paper discusses the complexities of decentralization and leadership responsibilities to effect changes toward a better path to socioeconomic development. It examines the problem with the Ghana Constitution as it pertains to local government elections and advocates for a constitutional amendment to empower districts and regions to elect their own leaders so that local governments in each district can be efficient and accountable to the electorate.

Post-Uruguay Round Gatt/Wto Dispute Settlement: Substance, Strengths, Weaknesses, And Causes For Concern, Michael Tkacik Apr 1997

Post-Uruguay Round Gatt/Wto Dispute Settlement: Substance, Strengths, Weaknesses, And Causes For Concern, Michael Tkacik

Faculty Publications

Dispute settlement under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (“GATT”) has come under increasing strain in recent years. The major powers often ignore GATT dispute settlement decisions which do not comport with their economic interests. This situation undermines the credibility of the GATT and threatens the system's framework. If dispute settlement under the GATT continues to be ineffective as it has been through much of the 1980s and early 1990s, GATT member states (“Members”) may well lose faith in the system, begin reimposing the tariffs that were present before the GATT, thereby risking worldwide trade war and possibly consequences …
