The International Court Of Justice: The Quest For Neutrality In A Prejudiced Political World, Zoe Buchmann Jan 2022

The International Court Of Justice: The Quest For Neutrality In A Prejudiced Political World, Zoe Buchmann

Politics, Philosophy, and Legal Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The International Court of Justice (ICJ), one of the primary organs of the United Nations, was created to serve as a court that handles matters between states and nations. Its purposes are to serve the international community and adjudicate general disputes in accordance with international law. The close relationship of the court to the Security Council should allow, in theory, for an unbiased legal exchange between the Court’s Judges and the members of the Security Council on any international dispute between the nations subject to the Court’s jurisdiction. The Court has contributed, since its creation, to establish guidelines for crucial …

Does Money Matter? Outside Spending In The 2020 Georgia Elections For The U.S. Senate, Brooke Wilson Jan 2022

Does Money Matter? Outside Spending In The 2020 Georgia Elections For The U.S. Senate, Brooke Wilson

Business: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Outside spending in American politics has become increasingly significant as a small number of groups are influencing elections for millions of people. Since these political nonprofits are allowed to take unlimited amounts of donations, they overpower small donors, taking away the average citizen’s voice. Before the 2000s, outside spending only accounted for 1% of total election spending. In the next decade, outside spending would rise to 9% of total election spending. When Citizens United was passed in 2010, spending by outside groups multiplied.

It is important to study the impact of outside spending in the 2020 Georgia Senate Elections because …

Is The United States ‘Exceptional’?, Wayne A. Selcher Jul 2021

Is The United States ‘Exceptional’?, Wayne A. Selcher

Faculty Publications

Debates over issues of national identity have been constants in American history, up to and including today, with the Civil War being the most notable and violent example of serious disagreement about national identity and unity. There are many interpretations of how the country came to be, what its defining characteristics are, and how factual or merely self-congratulatory the elements of the nationalistic claims of exceptionality really were or are now. Like any nationalistic tenet, the exceptionality thesis certainly requires a deliberatively selective and incomplete understanding of the national history. Whole university courses and disciplines of study in American Studies …

The Implications Of Greek, Turkish, And U.S. Triangular Relations On Transatlantic Security, Laura Cardona Jan 2021

The Implications Of Greek, Turkish, And U.S. Triangular Relations On Transatlantic Security, Laura Cardona

Summer Scholarship, Creative Arts and Research Projects (SCARP)

Since the discovery of hydrocarbon resources in the Eastern Mediterranean, tensions between Turkey and Greece have been exacerbated due to enhanced geostrategic competition in the region (Dursun-Ozkanca 2021). Against the background of Turkey’s increased self-confidence in its foreign policy in the region and its “Blue Homeland” doctrine on maritime claims in the Eastern Mediterranean (Gingeras 2020) as well as its changing relations with the EU and the US, the need for scholarly analyses of regional competition in the Eastern Mediterranean and its implications for transatlantic security relations has become more evident. While there have been few academic works focusing on …

North Korea's Treatment Of Foreign Political Prisoners In The Trump Era, Sara Allocco Apr 2020

North Korea's Treatment Of Foreign Political Prisoners In The Trump Era, Sara Allocco

Politics, Philosophy, and Legal Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

This paper analyzes foreign political prisoners’ treatment in North Korea during Donald Trump’s presidency. This subject is of particular interest given the widespread media attention the Trump Administration received following detained student Otto Warmbier’s return to the United States in June 2017 and historic Singapore summit between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Moreover, such U.S.-North Korea relations are particularly crucial given North Korea’s strong nuclear capabilities and designation as a totalitarian country. Using the Otto Warmbier story as the primary case study as well as public opinion analysis, bar association reports, official testimony, and commentary on international …

The Question Of National Self-Determination In Catalonia, Ethan Waugh Jan 2020

The Question Of National Self-Determination In Catalonia, Ethan Waugh

Politics, Philosophy, and Legal Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

National self-determination movements are ubiquitous social attempts of one regional or ethnic community to gain independence from a larger nation-state. These movements, although founded on democratic ideals, have the potential to disrupt the democratic process and drastically change international order. In the following paper, I first examine national self-determination movements, as a whole, from a theoretical perspective. In order to more critically analyze them, I take the case of Catalonia and its relationship with the Spanish national government, closely following the movement’s economic, cultural, and political claims to independence. Finally, I conclude my study by explaining Catalonia’s movement in the …

America First As A Foreign Policy : Multilateralism And Security Policy, Alissa Stoneking

Politics, Philosophy, and Legal Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

President Donald Trump has redefined America’s foreign policy around his mantra, “America First.” This has led to attempts at renegotiating international treaties and reversing American Foreign policy toward inter-governmental organizations (IGOs). His actions, specifically on security policy issues including Iran and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as well as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), have led to multiple short-term as well as potential long-term consequences. These include a level of uncertainty surrounding President Trump’s meaning of “America First” and a difficulty in understanding and/or anticipating his actions and intentions due to the lack of a clear foreign …

When Good Faith Breaks: How Internal And Regional Factors Decide The Success Of Irredentist Conflict, Kayla L. Gruber Apr 2018

When Good Faith Breaks: How Internal And Regional Factors Decide The Success Of Irredentist Conflict, Kayla L. Gruber

Politics, Philosophy, and Legal Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Recent eruptions of ethnic-sponsored conflict throughout the international community have reintroduced the once-discredited concept of irredentism in foreign affairs, and underlined the importance of evaluating the evolution of ethnic conflict in the 21st century. As ethnic movements continually devolve into civil wars, violent stalemates, and icy regional tensions, scholars and world leaders alike must ask: is irredentism a beneficial and effective policy option? Why do some nations with prominent diasporas refrain from engaging in irredentism? What are the factors that enable or inhibit the successful execution of irredentist aims?

This research analyzes two case studies—Russia-Crimea and Greece-Macedonia—in an effort to …

Modern Irredentism Or Cloaked Imperialism? Hidden Agendas And Hybrid Warfare In Reinstating The Russkiy Mir, Kayla L. Gruber

Politics, Philosophy, and Legal Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The partition of post-Soviet Union territory ignited numerous border disputes, ethnicrelated human rights concerns, and security dilemmas; these issues have intensified in the last twenty years, provoked by Russia’s rising power in the international system. The argument is that, despite citing abuses on ethnic kin as the reason for invading the Crimean peninsula, the decision to invade Crimea was a systematic effort to settle post-USSR grievances and rebuild a stronger, hegemonic Russian Federation. By reviewing motivations for Russia’s annexation of the Crimean peninsula—and integrating subsequent action in the Middle East, the United States, the Balkans, and Israel—findings from this research …
