Symbolic Racism In The 1995 Louisiana Gubernatorial Election, Jonathan Knuckley, Byron D. Orey Dec 2000

Symbolic Racism In The 1995 Louisiana Gubernatorial Election, Jonathan Knuckley, Byron D. Orey

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

In this paper we explore the effects of symbolic racism on the intended vote choice of whites by examining a white-on-black statewide election. It is argued that symbolic racial attitudes will be activated in a white-on-black election simply because of the mere presence of a black candidate. Methods. The white prospective vote for a white racially conservative candidate is examined using survey data from the 1995 Louisiana gubernatorial runoff conducted by the University of New Orleans Survey Research Center. Results. Symbolic racism was a strong predictor of intended vote choice, even after controlling for partisan identification and self-identified political philosophy. …

World Coffee Markets And National Coffee Parastatals Since 1989: A Comparative Study Of Colombia And Cote D'Ivoire, Laura Elizabeth Boudon

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the serious impact of the 1989 collapse of the ICA on the domestic coffee sectors of Colombia and Cote d'Ivoire. In particular, the dissertation examines the role of the Colombian and Ivoirian coffee parastatals, the Federacion Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia and the Caisse de Stabilisation et Soutien des Prix des Produits Agricoles, during the crisis and their transformation by it.

The 2000 Presidential Election In Louisiana, Susan E. Howell Oct 2000

The 2000 Presidential Election In Louisiana, Susan E. Howell

Survey Research Center Publications

The University of New Orleans Survey Research Center interviewed 658 registered voters by telephone between October 15 and 22. Results are reported for both the complete cross-section of registered voters and for the subset of likely voters, identified by the Gallup likely voter scale, which asks seven questions about voting habits. Regardless of whether you consider likely voters or all registered voters, George W. Bush enjoys a comfortable lead in Louisiana as of October 22. The margin is largely based on the 40% lead he has among white voters, who comprise over 70% of the electorate. Predictably, black voters overwhelmingly …

Rethinking Media And Movements, Chad Raphael Oct 2000

Rethinking Media And Movements, Chad Raphael

Communication

Todd Gitlin’s work helped us to understand the tremendous barriers to left movements speaking freely through commercial media and the potentially destructive impacts of media imperatives on movements. Edward Morgan adds another warning: today’s organizers must overcome a media history of the 1960s that demonizes or trivializes the era’s struggles for justice. But must we also overcome some of our own thinking about how movements create change and their relationship to the media? Certainly, coverage of anti-Vietnam War organizing is one case study worth revisiting to recover an accurate past that can inform contemporary mobilizations. But there is also a …

Does Political Incorporation Matter? The Impact Of Minority Mayors Over Time, John P. Pelissero, David B. Holian, Laura A. Tomaka Sep 2000

Does Political Incorporation Matter? The Impact Of Minority Mayors Over Time, John P. Pelissero, David B. Holian, Laura A. Tomaka

Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The authors assess the effects of minority political incorporation in large cities. An interrupted time-series research design is used to determine whether the election of a city’s first minority mayor has any short-term or long-term impact on fiscal policies. The authors examined six cities that elected black or Latino mayors and six cities with white mayors from 1972 to 1992. In general, they find that minority political incorporation did not significantly change fiscal policies in different ways from that which occurred in cities without minority incorporation.
