This paper analyses the diplomatic dynamics that define and underpin the relationship between the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and the Commonwealth Games host city. For the host city, the Commonwealth Games holds out the promise of global visibility, urban regeneration, improved economic activity and social cohesion. For the CGF, the appeal of the host city can improve athlete participation in the event, enhance the appeal and longevity of the sports involved and strengthen the sustainability of the sporting institution itself. To date, the relationship between diplomacy and international sport has been relatively under-theorized. This paper seeks to redress the deficiency by proposing an analytical taxonomy of the multiple convergences between international sport and diplomacy. The principal analytical distinction to be drawn is between (1) international sport consciously employed by governments as an instrument of diplomacy and (2) international-sport-as-diplomacy, the diplomatic representation, communication and negotiation between non-state actors that take place as a result of ongoing international sporting competition.

This paper argues that the relationship between democracy and corruption is nonmonotonic. When a country shifts from autocratic rule to highly imperfect democracy (an ‘electoral democracy’) it is frequently perceived that the level of corruption increases. Conversely, when the democracy level is already relatively high (approaching ‘mature democracy’) an increase in the level of democracy is typically expected to decrease the level of corruption. To assist with our discussion of these issues, before going on to the empirical part of the paper, we look specifically at the case of South Korea to illustrate how corruption responded to an increasing level …

Sports-diplomacy is a familiar but relatively under-explored area of theory and practice in diplomatic studies. Existing scholarship is akin to sports-diplomacy's practice: anecdotal, sporadic articles that are case specific. This analysis posits that in the modern, plural diplomatic environment, sports-diplomacy does have potential, but that will not be realised until further discussion and scholarship is undertaken. Specifically, the “gap” in the diplomatic studies literature needs filling, as well as addressing and discussing the question: “do the benefits outweigh the dangers of ‘mixing’ sport and diplomacy?” The article's purpose is rudimentary. We ask how gender relations and understandings of femininity and masculinity influence political violence, which includes politics related to terrorism, state terrorism, and genocide.
