Solidarity, The Regime And The Public, David Mason Oct 2010

Solidarity, The Regime And The Public, David Mason

David S. Mason

This paper examines the extent to which Solidarity acted as a link between the population and the regime and as a representative of the interests of the workers. It looks first at the reasons for the emergence of Solidarity, and Solidarity's subsequent embodiment of the society's desire for a political and economic order more in line with the ideals of socialism, and more genuinely representative of the workers' interests. It concludes by assessing the charges against Solidarity made by the martial law authorities, the extent of current support for the union and the regime, and the possibilities for a resolution …

Romanian Autonomy And Arms Control Policies, David Mason Mar 2010

Romanian Autonomy And Arms Control Policies, David Mason

David S. Mason

Romania has proved to be an interesting case study of the limits of autonomy within the Soviet bloc. Romania's foreign policy has become increasingly independent of Soviet dictates over the last fifteen years, while domestic controls have remained as rigid as any in Eastern Europe.

The End Of The American Century, David Mason Sep 2008

The End Of The American Century, David Mason

David S. Mason

This compelling and persuasive book is the first to explore all of the interrelated aspects of America's decline. Hard-hitting and provocative, yet measured and clearly written, The End of the American Century demonstrates the phases of social, economic, and international decline that mark the end of a period of world dominance that began with World War II. David S. Mason convincingly shows that the war on terror and the Iraq War have exacerbated American domestic weakness and malaise, and its image and stature in the world community. As the dynamic economies of India and China and the revitalized European Union …

The Legitimation Of Capitalism In The Postcommunist Transition: Public Opinion About Market Justice, 1991-1996, James Kluegel, David Mason, Bernd Wegener Dec 1998

The Legitimation Of Capitalism In The Postcommunist Transition: Public Opinion About Market Justice, 1991-1996, James Kluegel, David Mason, Bernd Wegener

David S. Mason

This paper examines change in economic justice attitudes in five former communist states (Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, eastern Germany, Hungary, and Russia), using data from opinion surveys conducted in 1991 and 1996. We examine the implications of theory and research concerning the popular legitimation of western capitalism for change in support for 'market justice' beliefs and norms among postcommunist publics. Our analyses show: first, that in the Czech Republic and eastern Germany, public opinion is moving closer to market justice as found in western capitalism, but socialist justice remains strong or is increasing in the other three countries; secondly, that …

Social Justice And Political Change: Public Opinion In Capitalist And Post-Communist States, David Mason, James Kluegel, Bernd Wegener Dec 1994

Social Justice And Political Change: Public Opinion In Capitalist And Post-Communist States, David Mason, James Kluegel, Bernd Wegener

David S. Mason

Until recent times, analysis and debate about economic and political justice did not involve research on the views of the common person. Scholars often made assumptions about what common people think is fair, but for the most part they confined their thinking to a single country and argued on rational or moral grounds, with little supporting empirical data. The present volume, involving the collaboration of 30 social scientists in 12 countries, represents the most broad-ranging comparative research to date. The book is the first to grow out of the work of the International Social Justice Project (ISJP), a collaborative study …

Public Opinion And Political Change In Poland, 1980-1982, David Mason Dec 1984

Public Opinion And Political Change In Poland, 1980-1982, David Mason

David S. Mason

This book deals with the importance of public opinion in Poland at the time of the rise of Solidarity and the workers' movement, when opinion polling and freedom of political debate were at their height. Dr Mason's analysis is based on the most open and revealing opinion polls ever to issue from a communist country, polls conducted by the government, the universities and Solidarity itself on fundamental political issues - the nature of the socialist state, the role of the party, popular confidence in Solidarity, the church and the regime. The lack of information about public attitudes is perhaps the …
