The Relationship Between The Mmpi-2'S Rc3 Cynicism Scale And Social Support, Blake K. Webster Dec 2007

The Relationship Between The Mmpi-2'S Rc3 Cynicism Scale And Social Support, Blake K. Webster

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The current study examined the MMPI-2's Restructured Clinical Scale 3 (RC3) measuring cynicism from the Tellegen et al. (2003) Restructured Clinical Scales project. While RC3 has shown adequate reliability coefficients, research investigating RC3 has questioned its validity and descriptive abilities. Research suggests that adequate criterion has not been established for the scale. RC3 in this study was correlated with three types of social support: Proactive Coping, Instrumental Support Seeking, and Emotional Support Seeking. Based on a review of the literature of cynicism and social support, it was hypothesized that a negative relationship would exist between the two constructs. The study …

Shyness And Social Discomfort As Measured By The Mmpi-2, Lori Hebel Dec 1998

Shyness And Social Discomfort As Measured By The Mmpi-2, Lori Hebel

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to provide additional validity information for the Social Introversion Scale (Si), the Social Introversion Sub-scales (Si 1, Si 2 and Si 3), the Social Discomfort Content Scale (SOD) and the component scales (SOD 1 and SOD 2) of the MMPI-2. Previous research has focused on comparing the MMPI-2 with other self-report measures. The present study attempted to determine how well the MMPI-2 predicted behavioral observations of shyness and anxiety and self-reported discomfort in social situations. 88 participants took the MMPI-2 and then participated in a group activity. Observer and self-ratings of this activity were …

Identification Of Perfectionistic College Students, Susan A. Morgan Dec 1993

Identification Of Perfectionistic College Students, Susan A. Morgan

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to identify distinctive personality characteristics for perfectionistic college students. One hundred eighty-four graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in psychology and business courses were asked to participate by completing a measure of perfectionism and a personality test. The participants scores were arranged into groups based on their MPS subscale scores. Discriminant analyses revealed 3 separate clusters of variables which predicted perfectionism group membership with surprising accuracy.

Aggression: An Organismic Variable Influencing Perception Of Horizontal-Vertical Lines, Thomas C. Dunn May 1977

Aggression: An Organismic Variable Influencing Perception Of Horizontal-Vertical Lines, Thomas C. Dunn

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Most people when viewing horizontal-vertical lines of equal length, judge the vertical line as longer than the horizontal line. The relationship R = f(S) has been extensively studied in an attempt to explain the horizontal-vertical illusion (HVI). An adequate explanation has not been proposed, The present study approached the phenomenon of the illusion with the relationship R = f(0). The problem was to determine if aggressiveness was a significant factor in judgments of the HVI. The Edwards Personal Preference Schedule (EPPS) was used to define and measure aggression in forty students at Missouri Southern State College, Joplin, Missouri. The hypothesis …

A Study Correlating Investment With Political, Religious, And Moral Attitudes, Robert K. Docherty May 1972

A Study Correlating Investment With Political, Religious, And Moral Attitudes, Robert K. Docherty

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The study was to determine the correlation between a person's investment in society, as measured by economic factors, and a person's liberal attitudes about that society. The attitude areas used to measure liberal-conservative attitudes were political, religious, and moral.

The hypothesis stated that as investment increased, the scale of liberal attitudes in politics, religion, and morals would decrease. A significant negative correlation would support the hypothesis. A significant positive correlation indicated a reverse of the hypothesis, that is an increase in investment showed an increase in liberal attitudes.

Demographic factors controlled in this study were, sex, age, marital status and …

A Comparison Of Reality And Functional Efficiency Items Of Thirteen, Fourteen, And Fifteen-Year-Old Junior High School Students On The Draw-A-Person Test, Sam Carter Jan 1963

A Comparison Of Reality And Functional Efficiency Items Of Thirteen, Fourteen, And Fifteen-Year-Old Junior High School Students On The Draw-A-Person Test, Sam Carter

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

This study was an attempt to help determine whether or not a modified Draw-A-Person test has possibilities for development into an adequate dual-purpose group screening device (intellectual and personality assessment) for psychologists working in educational, guidance, and clinical settings.

The modified DAP test used includes drawings of the same sex, opposite sex, and a self drawing. Scoring procedures are similar to Goodenough's method; however, some modifications were necessary as female drawings were scored frequently.

The Parsons, Kansas, Junior High School System, consisting of 615 seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students was used in this project. The students, with the exception …

Diagnostic Limitations Of The Draw-A-Person Test With The Mentally Retarded, B. Theodore Blizzard Jan 1960

Diagnostic Limitations Of The Draw-A-Person Test With The Mentally Retarded, B. Theodore Blizzard

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The historical survey in Goodenough's Measurement of Intelligence by Drawings reviews this area since 1885 and indicates a continued interest of investigators in many parts of the world in the drawings of children. A recurrent theme suggested in most of the published observations was that some characteristics of the drawings were subject to a developmental process and showed significant maturational changes. More recently, this general feeling has grown to include personality factors as a major aspect of drawing behavior to the point where current emphasis has now shifted from the formal aspects of scoring, necessary in the evaluation of intelligence, …
