Africa Nations have contributed to peace operations in conflict zones across the world since the deployment of the United Nations Operations in the Congo in 1960. This has placed Africa as a major stakeholder in the maintenance of peace and security. Legislatures worldwide are an important arm of government in any political system that has an active oversight over defence. As elected representatives of the people legislators are at the heart of the democratic system. They represent the electorate from whom the armed forces of any state are drawn and whose taxes pay for their upkeep.
