Assassination And The Death Of Politics, Steven Alan Samson Dec 1995

Assassination And The Death Of Politics, Steven Alan Samson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The assassination of Israeli's prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin, moments after speaking of his hopes for peace at a large public rally in Tel Aviv gives his death the added poignancy of the image of an old soldier giving up his life in the pursuit of peace. But the assassin's bullets were also aimed at the heart of an entire nation.

It may indeed be true, as Simone Weil observed, that the destruction of a city is the greatest calamity that can befall the human race. The scope of the horrors that have accompanied twentieth century warfare and ethnic strife is …

Towards Improved Competitiveness Of The Economies Of The West African Economic And Monetary Union, E. O. Akinnifesi Aug 1995

Towards Improved Competitiveness Of The Economies Of The West African Economic And Monetary Union, E. O. Akinnifesi

CBN Occasional Papers

As is well known, a monetary union with a common currency confers on its members the advantage of fixed exchange rate and consequent relative price stability. While these advantages held sway up to the mid-1980s in the case of the seven member countries of the CEA franc zone in West Africa, the vulnerability of the zone to external shocks became manifest from the second half of the 1980s. Fairly persistent overvaluation of the CEA franc over time had weakened the competitiveness of the export sector leading to several economic problems including domestic and external debt arrears, capital flight, and negative …

The Commons And The New Age Of Laissez Faire, Roger A. Lohmann Jul 1995

The Commons And The New Age Of Laissez Faire, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The one thing new laissez faire rhetoric seldom does is find any

place for broader visions of civil society, and in particular,

nonprofit organizations, voluntary action, or philanthropy which

have been such important parts of the American past.

Laissez faire visions of the future being promoted today

are dangerously limited in at least one important respect: They

omit any reference to nonprofit organizations, voluntary action or

philanthropy (along with sustaining reference groups like family

and support and friendship groups) as operative parts of the

future. Instead, they offer an altogether familiar bi-polar social

universe from the past composed of “the …

Professional Books -- Competence, Courage, And Change: An Approach To Family Therapy By D. B. Waters And E. C. Lawrence, Dean M. Busby Apr 1995

Professional Books -- Competence, Courage, And Change: An Approach To Family Therapy By D. B. Waters And E. C. Lawrence, Dean M. Busby

Faculty Publications

In this book Waters and Lawrence present a model of family therapy that is refreshing and informative. They use principles from strength-focused paradigms without ignoring pathology. They call this emphasis "healthy intentions, unhealthy outcomes." In an innovative way Waters and Lawrence help clients uncover the competent strivings underlying pathological behaviors. Once these strivings are uncovered, the therapist and client can work together to find effective ways of reaching goals without engaging in destructive behaviors. Rather than ignore pathology and thereby negate clients' experiences, or overemphasize pathology and remove hope, the authors use pathology as the vehicle to understand the inner …

Samuel, Patrick And Cato: A History Of The Dallas Fire Of 1860 And Its Tragic Aftermath, William R. Farmer (1921-2000)

Perkins Faculty Research and Special Events

In this unpublished work, William R. Farmer (1921-2000), former associate professor of New Testament at Perkins School of Theology, recounts the story of the Dallas Fire of 1860 and the events that followed: the hanging of three innocent African American men and the whipping of many local slaves. Farmer’s work explores the causes of these acts of racial terrorism by presenting and discussing numerous primary resources. Accompanying the book manuscript is a related work: “A Reader for the Study of the Dallas Fire of 1860.” Both documents were created in the late 1990s.

Effects Of Assets On Attitudes And Behaviors: Advance Test Of A Social Policy Proposal, Gautam N. Yadama, Michael Sherraden Jan 1995

Effects Of Assets On Attitudes And Behaviors: Advance Test Of A Social Policy Proposal, Gautam N. Yadama, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

Raising asset limits and creating individual development accounts have been proposed in welfare reform. In part the rationale for these proposals is that assets have positive effects on attitudes and behaviors, including long-term planning, greater work effort, and improved social connectedness. The Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), between 1968 and 1972, included a wide range of attitude and behavioral measures. In this study, data from the PSID are analyzed to test for the following: a) the effect of assets on attitudes and behaviors; b) the effect of attitudes and behaviors on assets; c) the effect of income on attitudes …
