The Potential Of Erin Brokovitch To Introduce Organizaitonal Behavior Topics, J. Benjamin Forbes, Jonathan E. Smith Dec 2007

The Potential Of Erin Brokovitch To Introduce Organizaitonal Behavior Topics, J. Benjamin Forbes, Jonathan E. Smith

Organization Management Journal

Real organizational behavior is rich, and messy, and emotional, and at times painful, but at other times immensely rewarding. The movie, Erin Brockovich, captures this richness and provides an exciting means to introduce a variety of individual or micro- organizational behavior concepts (such as perception, personality, and motivation) typically covered at the beginning of the Organizational Behavior course. In this paper, we describe the use of the film, including a takehome viewing assignment, an in-class assignment, a description of clips and comments for in-class use, and suggestions for the types of issues to discuss in relation to the major topics …

Jane's Decision: Her Experience As A Plebe, Andra Gumbus, Jill Woodilla, Christopher C. York Dec 2007

Jane's Decision: Her Experience As A Plebe, Andra Gumbus, Jill Woodilla, Christopher C. York

Organization Management Journal

Jane (a pseudonym) describes her experience as a first year student at one of the military service academies sometime during the period 2000-2005. She portrays the rigors of training to be an officer in the US military service and the special burdens of being a good-looking, high-achieving woman in this environment. She provides an insider's perspective on the academy culture, including the importance of the honor code, and spoken and unspoken rules against fraternization and for protecting ―one's own. At the end of the case Jane must make a decision that could change the course of her life. The case …

"Where There Is A Will…": A New Exercise To Explore Distributive And Integrative Conflict Management, Joseph Seltzer, James W. Smither Dec 2007

"Where There Is A Will…": A New Exercise To Explore Distributive And Integrative Conflict Management, Joseph Seltzer, James W. Smither

Organization Management Journal

An exercise was developed to provide a quick and comprehensive exploration of conflict management styles and integrative versus distributive bargaining. Two brothers meet to divide nine items and cash from their father‘s estate. Some items are wanted by one brother more than the other, often because of information known to only one. One item requires an integrative solution to fully gain its value. A variation of the exercise is suggested that incorporates the relationship between the brothers as another variable in managing conflict. Teaching notes and examples of classroom use and student responses are provided.

Teaching A New Generation: The Differences Are Not Trivial, Steven I. Meisel, David S. Fearon Dec 2007

Teaching A New Generation: The Differences Are Not Trivial, Steven I. Meisel, David S. Fearon

Organization Management Journal

As organizational behavior learners apply managerial knowledge in classroom exercises or in the field, the hidden knowledge they hold of the cultural context of these applications works spontaneously to create meaning. This contextual knowledge is developed profoundly in our formative years; thus tacit experiential knowledge differs by generation. Today’s college-aged Millennials see organizational life and OB theory differently than yesterday’s Gen X, or Baby Boomer cohorts. These differences are revealed in an exercise using the vintage (1982) and current editions of the board game Trivial Pursuit. This activity asks learners to find the presence of generationally-cultivated knowledge in their daily …

A Research-Based Approach To Continuous Improvement In Business Education, Peter W. Hess, Julie Siciliano Sep 2007

A Research-Based Approach To Continuous Improvement In Business Education, Peter W. Hess, Julie Siciliano

Organization Management Journal

The growing emphasis on improving performance in business school programs relies on a continuous improvement model designed for manufacturing and business service organizations. However, the complexity of learning assessment and the lack of expertise in learning processes suggests that change is needed to adapt this model for application in higher education. We propose integrating a research basis into the current continuous improvement model that will result in educational and instructional processes shaped by scientific research. Issues associated with implementation are discussed.

Encountering One Another: Feminist Relationships In Organizational Research, Kristina A. Bourne Sep 2007

Encountering One Another: Feminist Relationships In Organizational Research, Kristina A. Bourne

Organization Management Journal

As a graduate student attempting to integrate feminist principles into my academic endeavors, I eagerly entered the research field to examine how women business owners who feel a conflict between feminism and capitalism enact their everyday lives. I chose participant observation, a common methodology in feminist research, with the aim of getting “inside” these women’s lives to better understand their experiences. However, as the fieldwork proceeded, my focus shifted to examining the space in which the realities of the feminist organizational researcher and of the feminist business owner encounter one another. This paper reflects upon how we made sense of …

Exercise: Scenario Planning, Paul Miesing, Raymond K. Van Ness Sep 2007

Exercise: Scenario Planning, Paul Miesing, Raymond K. Van Ness

Organization Management Journal

Corporations operate in political, economic, and technological environments that can change rapidly. Competitive advantage can be the reward for those that anticipate, plan, and prepare for change. This exercise demonstrates the essence and value of scenario planning and enables students to experience the process of planning in volatile environments. Teams are formed, an organization is selected, and a list of strategy questions is prepared and narrowed to each team’s overriding “Big Question.” Students brainstorm a range of critical events in the competitive and general environments. Surprise is injected into the exercise by random assignment of trajectories to critical events that …

Using Published Arbitration Decisions To Develop Teaching Examples, Cases And Exercises, Margaret A. Lucero

Organization Management Journal

A sample of arbitration decisions are published every year on a wide variety of topics including workplace fighting, theft, insubordination, attendance problems, alcohol or drug abuse, and sexual harassment. These published cases provide interesting, timely, and complex examples of actual events. Using this material as a basis, unique, realistic cases and exercises can be developed to focus on many different workplace topics.

Exercising Control At Sports Rehab Network, Mark Mensch, Barry Armandi, Herbert Sherman May 2007

Exercising Control At Sports Rehab Network, Mark Mensch, Barry Armandi, Herbert Sherman

Organization Management Journal

This is a field-based disguised case describing how an entrepreneur who develops a successful rehabilitation business now must operate within the confines of a bureaucratic hospital setting. The CEO of the hospital who had ordered him not to seek any new ventures given the hospital’s cash flow problems was stymieing his entrepreneurial orientation. The case has a difficulty level appropriate for a junior level course in small business management and entrepreneurship. The case is designed to be taught in one class period (may vary from sixty minutes to one hundred minutes depending upon the course structure and the instructional approach …

Lessons In Leadership: Robert Oppenheimer And The Los Alamos Laboratory, Richard C. Ringer May 2007

Lessons In Leadership: Robert Oppenheimer And The Los Alamos Laboratory, Richard C. Ringer

Organization Management Journal

The leadership of Robert Oppenheimer, Director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during WWII, serves as a vivid lesson in leadership. The recollections of those who worked with Oppenheimer at Los Alamos clearly attribute much of the success of the laboratory to Oppenheimer’s leadership. Of specific interest are: Oppenheimer's efforts in recruiting, his ability to create a sense of meaning and purpose at the laboratory, his technical competence, and his ability to generate commitment and involvement among members of the laboratory.

Discovering The Enemy Within: An Exercise In Unintended Thought, Carolyn I. Chavez, Yiling Ge May 2007

Discovering The Enemy Within: An Exercise In Unintended Thought, Carolyn I. Chavez, Yiling Ge

Organization Management Journal

This experiential exercise addresses a complex and many faceted problem in organizational psychology that is sometimes referred to as false consciousness. By bringing the subconscious into focus, we learn how we got where we are, and more importantly, we learn that while our environment may affect our beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors, we are in no way helpless pawns of our socialization. The exercise is a fun house of mirrors, providing opportunities to address myriad organizational behavior issues. We explore how much of our current behaviors are due to socialization, conscious thought, and context. We investigate intended versus actual behaviors, our …

Individual Incentives Versus Team Performance: Lessons From A Game Of Charades, Shawn E. Peacock, Patricia Denise Lopez, Marlon F. Sukal May 2007

Individual Incentives Versus Team Performance: Lessons From A Game Of Charades, Shawn E. Peacock, Patricia Denise Lopez, Marlon F. Sukal

Organization Management Journal

In this article, we describe a modified game of Charades that was developed to facilitate a discussion on the basic principles of effective reward system design. Students are organized into small groups. Incentive schemes are then manipulated so that one player within the group strives for an individual incentive, while the rest of the team play for a group reward. Through this simple and “fun” activity, students learn firsthand what happens when individual and team interests and incentives are not aligned. This experiential learning activity also offers excellent opportunities to discuss group dynamics, communication and coordination, and the importance of …

The Group Creativity Exercise Getting Mbas To Work And Think Effectively In Groups, David E. Desplaces, Steven W. Congden, Power Boothe

Organization Management Journal

This experiential exercise is designed to engage participants in a process of group creativity that helps students lead or be a part of a creative team. The challenging and tangible nature of building a roomheight tower provides a heightened experience that elicits many issues and strong emotions. The exercise provides a robust platform from which the instructor can choose which of many group creativity subtopics to emphasize. In addition to exercise instructions, guidance is given on how learning goals related to creativity techniques, group development, interpersonal dynamics, and leadership—can be addressed in a debriefing discussion. Both “pretaught” and “retrospective” teaching …
