Factors Associated With Successful Military-To-Civilian Transition Among Special Forces Veterans, Edward Richter Jan 2023

Factors Associated With Successful Military-To-Civilian Transition Among Special Forces Veterans, Edward Richter

Theses and Dissertations--Social Work

The purpose of this study was to explore the military-to-civilian transitional experience in a sample of Special Forces veterans. Acknowledging challenges in accessing the veteran population, most existing research on the military-to-civilian transition consolidates military occupations into a single sample. This method fails to address the intricacies that may exist within individual military occupations, especially that of U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers. Special Forces qualified soldiers represent the largest portion of all U.S. Military Special Operations Forces and are responsible for the majority of all Special Operations activities, yet their experience in transitioning out of the Army is largely unknown. …

This work is a review and extension of our ongoing research in human recognition analysis using multimodality motion sensor data. We review our work on hand crafted feature engineering for motion capture skeleton (MoCap) data, from the Air Force Research Lab for human gender followed by depth scan based skeleton extraction using LIDAR data from the Army Night Vision Lab for person identification. We then build on these works to demonstrate a transfer learning sensor fusion approach for using the larger MoCap and smaller LIDAR data for gender classification.

Optimizing Workforce Performance: Perceived Differences Of Army Officer Critical Thinking Talent Across Level Of Education, Richard B. Ayers May 2016

Optimizing Workforce Performance: Perceived Differences Of Army Officer Critical Thinking Talent Across Level Of Education, Richard B. Ayers

Dissertations

The U.S. Army’s operating environment continues to become increasingly complex and unpredictable, where U.S. technological advantage continues to erode. The complexities stem from the Army’s doctrinal assumption that the future operating environment is unknown and constantly changing (Department of the Army [DA], 2014a). Diminishing technological advantage results in more reliance on soldiers’ cognitive capability, and less on high technology weapons systems (McMaster, 2015).

A review of military literature shows extensive research on the importance of Army leaders to be talented critical thinkers (Fischer, Spiker, & Riedel, 2008, 2009; Gerras, 2008; Thomas & Gentzler, 2013). Human capital literature reveals many college …

Aloha ʻĀina: The United States Military And Its Controversial Use Of Hawaiian Land, Kai Bernier-Chen Jan 2016

Aloha ʻĀina: The United States Military And Its Controversial Use Of Hawaiian Land, Kai Bernier-Chen

Senior Projects Spring 2016

In this senior project, I examine the United States military’s controversial use of Hawaiian land. Following the islands’ annexation to the United States in 1898, a growing number of political and legal disputes concerning the use of Hawaiian lands for military training purposes have arisen between members of the native Hawaiian community and the United States military. As both the island of Kaho’olawe and the Pōhakuloa Training Area have shown, the military’s management of these lands has left much to be desired as the sites have suffered significant cultural and environmental damages. Through its continued leasing of these sacred lands …

A Comparison Of Marketing Techniques Among Military Recruiters, Paul Vincent Mccullough Iii Jan 2016

A Comparison Of Marketing Techniques Among Military Recruiters, Paul Vincent Mccullough Iii

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The U.S. Department of Defense spent $11 billion in enlistment and retention bonuses from 2006 to 2010, which had only a marginally positive effect on the enlistment rate for the Army. The case study addressed this business problem of recruiting by exploring marketing strategies successful recruiting professionals used to motivate individuals to join the military. The purpose of this study was to determine effective recruiting strategies. Therefore, it incorporated the conceptual framework of emergent strategy theory, which postulated the best strategies are neither completely planned nor completely random, but are rather an adaptation to changing dynamics and circumstances. The population …

A Framework To Simplify The Choice Of Alternative Analysis And Selection Methods, James Paul Lewis Holzgrefe Jul 2015

A Framework To Simplify The Choice Of Alternative Analysis And Selection Methods, James Paul Lewis Holzgrefe

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation contributes a framework for analysts and engineering managers to investigate and choose alternative analysis and selection methods based upon their problem and its context. It began as an investigation into the alternative analysis and selection methods used in military planning. The existing military methods were inconsistent, violated the decision science body of knowledge, and provided no guidance to the practitioner on matching methods to problems. These challenges made it necessary to conduct this investigation.

This research used a three-phase mixed methods approach. The first phase applied the general inductive method to the decision making body of knowledge to …

A Force Of Change: Chris Peterson And The Us Army’S Global Assessment Tool, Paul B. Lester, Peter D. Harms, Mitchel Norman Herian, Walter J. Sowden Jan 2014

A Force Of Change: Chris Peterson And The Us Army’S Global Assessment Tool, Paul B. Lester, Peter D. Harms, Mitchel Norman Herian, Walter J. Sowden

P. D. Harms Publications

The US Army launched the Global Assessment Tool (GAT) – a 105-item psychometric instrument taken by approximately one million soldiers annually – in October, 2009 in support of a population-wide resilience development initiative known as the Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness (CSF2) program. The lead developer of the GAT was Chris Peterson, and his work on this project – along with that of Nansook Park and Colonel Carl Castro – will likely leave an important and indelible mark on not only the Army, but also the field of military psychology. In this paper, we provide more detail on the history …

Army Transformation: What Does It Mean?, David Jerome Dec 2011

Army Transformation: What Does It Mean?, David Jerome

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The way in which senior U.S. Army leaders such as the chiefs of staff define transformative change is important, especially if the meaning of that term is to be interpreted as originally intended by Army field grade officers. An Army chief of staff is responsible for creating a vision and establishing goals for the future, and field grade officers are responsible for pursuing that vision and those goals by implementing objectives that endeavor to arrive at the desired ends. By using both qualitative and quantitative methods, this research analyzes what each of the three chiefs of staff, who have served …

Deep Dive Into Understanding The Theory Of Military Organization, Military Leadership, Skill Transfer, Aspects Of Program Management, And Decision Support Systems, Maurice Dawson, Darrell N. Burrell, Emad Rahim Dec 2009

Deep Dive Into Understanding The Theory Of Military Organization, Military Leadership, Skill Transfer, Aspects Of Program Management, And Decision Support Systems, Maurice Dawson, Darrell N. Burrell, Emad Rahim

Maurice Dawson

The focus of this paper is to understand the theory of military organizations and leadership, skill transfer, aspects of program management, and decision support systems. This will further aid in revealing how the decision-making theories are applied to organizations within the Department of Defense (DoD) to include the changing environment within the leadership style. Through the research, major points found in articles highlight decision making, learning leadership execution through educational means, and leadership in the military to include large corporate organizations.
