The Motivation Of Self-Investment, Dan Nunley

A game of chance void of feedback was played by 36 adults to determine the motivational properties of various degrees of self-investment. The levels of self-investment were created by altering the extent to which subjects were involved in making one of the symbols used in the game. A practice trial was used to establish each subjects base score and a final trial to determine behavior changes induced by self-investment. The gains between trials yielded significant results (p<.01) due to subject participation in the experimental process.

The purpose of this study was to determine maternal and paternal perceptions of the neonate. The Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was used to measure perception.

Thirty couples who delivered normal, healthy, first-born infants at a Naval Hospital in San Diego volunteered for the study. Consent forms were signed during the hospital stay and the Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was administered to both parents in the homes when the infants were one month old.

Statistical analysis of data showed that mothers and fathers did rate their one-month-old infants as above the average infant using the Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory. The range …

Home support services for the aged are emerging as a primary concern in the Title XX planning proposals put forth by states and localities. This is not surprising when one considers that Title XX guidelines require the setting of priorities among non-cash benefit programs that help insure the individual's self-sufficiency within his or her normal environment.

So much in our society separates the rest of us from the old that a discussion of the differential aspects of practice with the elderly and their families (many of whom are aging) runs the risk of being redundant as well as a concealed endorsement of the professional biases which afflict us all. The truth of the matter is that important differences do exist between social work practice with the old and with younger generations, differentials which emanate from a sound gerontological knowledge base. The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Life change, political, and demographic factors associated with past use, projected use, and perceived community needs for services by the aged were examined. Data were derived from interviews conducted with men and women 65 or over in a midwestern community. Life changes were more useful in explaining relationships with health and social services among men than were demographic and political variables. But among women, there was less difference in the amount of variance explained by the three groups of variables. Although men and women differed little in the extent to which they had experienced life changes, discontinuity was differentially associated …

A Comparison Of The Volley & Ground-Stroke Methods Of Teaching Beginning Tennis Utilizing The Command & Task Teaching Techniques, Neil Decker

Designed to compare the effectiveness of two beginning tennis teaching methods and two teaching techniques, this study used ninety-seven male and female students enrolled in four beginning tennis classes as subjects.

After pretests, the Dyer Wallboard and the Broer-Miller Forehand-Backhand Drive Tests, each class was instructed in one of the two designated methods and by one of the two techniques. Thirteen 45-minute sessions of instruction were followed by posttesting.

A two-way analysis of covariance, using the pretests as the covariate, was computed with the data provided by the two dependent variables.

Results of the statistical analysis of the data revealed …

The objective was to identify the leisure preferences of elderly in Bowling Green Nutrition Programs. This objective was to be accomplished through the utilization of a leisure preference test. Since no leisure preference test was found, the study was significant not only for the results obtained but also to evaluate this new test.

The test was designed after the format utilized in the Edwards Personal Preference Test. Major categories were selected and each was composed of five leisure opportunity statements. Each category was placed in opposition to every other category four times to comprise the test. A test was then …

Much explanation of human behavior is based on assumptions about animal behavior. Two major contemporary theories, Behaviorism and Freudianism place major emphasis upon the human being as animal. Many middle-level theories have no reference to man's distinctive social characteristics. However, social explanations of behavior do have a heuristic advantage in the study of human functioning and "social pathology."

The theoretical framework of structural functionalism in sociological theory does not consist of a single, unified, and consistent exposition. Different writers make different emphases, use somewhat different terminolog, and include different phenomena under a variety of similar terms. Rather than attempt to deal superficially with a wide variety of theorists writing out of this perspective, we will focus primarily on the central concepts in the work of perhaps the most eminent proponent of this approach in current sociological work - Talcott Parsons - and, in turn, discuss the relevance of this framework for social work education and practice.

The study focused upon the time prior to and including the decision to hospitalize a mentally ill family member. This study investigated the effects of sex differences on clinical judgements. This study investigated the effect of distracting linguistic background noise on children's ability to perform three-part commands. A total of twelve first grade subjects, six "normal" and six reading delayed, were individually administered a series of twenty, three-part commands. Each child performed once in quiet and once in a noise environment, and the performances in those two conditions were compared.
