Reproductive Health In America: A History Of Patriarchal Control, Hailey Mccool

Undergraduate Research Conference

The United States is often referred to as the land of opportunity and the home of the free, yet today, those who challenge the patriarchal system are not treated fairly or equitably. Historically, from owning land to voting women have fought for the same rights enjoyed by men. The effort of early feminist movements paved the way for the Supreme Court to protect women’s reproductive rights through Roe v. Wade. For decades, women were able to make a choice regarding their reproductive health. However, in just the past year (2022), the Supreme Court ruled to strike down Roe v. …

Antagonistic Pleiotropy In Alzheimer's Disease, Annie Hollis Mar 2023

Antagonistic Pleiotropy In Alzheimer's Disease, Annie Hollis

Undergraduate Research Conference

Apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele has been linked with Alzheimer’s disease; specifically having two copies of the APOE ε4 allele greatly increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in older age. Studies have attempted to relate an antagonistic pleiotropy hypothesis to this gene, i.e., the ε4 allele has positive effects on cognition and memory in early life and negative effects later in life. Many of these studies have had several limitations and conflicting results, such as testing adults in upper middle age or comparing the absence of the ε4 allele with the presence of at least one ε4 allele. Studies …

The Study Of Wellbeing In College Students Involved In Organizations: A Qualitative Research Analysis, Reese Murphy

Undergraduate Research Conference

As stress levels rise and increasing amounts of students seek help, this article strives to define the areas that affect students the most while suggesting possible implementation strategies that are proven to be effective in reducing these factors. Qualitative interviews and PhotoVoice were used for data collection. Results were analyzed through a transcription and coding process. Recommendations are made within the article to suggest possible implementation strategies proven to reduce stress within the areas of college student wellbeing. The overall findings of the study suggest that college students, regardless of organizational involvement, focus on mental, physical and social wellness more …

A Study On The Development Of Robotic Prosthesis, Alexandra Knight Apr 2018

A Study On The Development Of Robotic Prosthesis, Alexandra Knight

Undergraduate Research Conference

This paper is a multi-analysis study of the development of robotic prosthesis. There are many types of robotic prosthesis, some of which are already in circulation. However, true robotic prosthetics which can move in the exact fashion of the original limb are still in the early stages of prototyping. In experimenting there have been problems found in the methods of communicating movement and the manufacturing of sensory recording material. Using a comparison of the failed and successful experiments it is possibly to approximate the material that will be used and the cost of future market ready robotic prosthesis.

When Old-Order Amish Meet New Order Science: Genetic Maladies And The Amish Dilemma, Kelley Downey

Undergraduate Research Conference

The Old World Amish, an Anabaptist Christian domination in the United States and Canada are know for their plain dress, avoidance of modern technology, and separation from the mainstream society.

A traditional agricultural religious group, the Old World Amish maintains isolation from the rest of the community. Financially well-off, they are homogeneous on education, occupation by gender, age at marriage, religion/ethnicity, and health care.

Although the Amish strongly discourage marriage between close cousins, the Lancaster Amish genealogy is described as mutational - inbreeding from multiple, remote connections rather than close consanguinity (first-cousin marriages).

Amish settlements have been identified with certain …
