N-Nitrosamine Rejection By Nanofiltration And Reverse Osmosis Membranes: The Importance Of Membrane Characteristics, Takahiro Fujioka, Stuart J. Khan, James A. Mcdonald, Annalie Roux, Yvan Poussade, Jorg E. Drewes, Long D. Nghiem

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The influence of membrane characteristics on the rejection of eight N-nitrosamines was investigated using one nanofiltration (NF), one seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) and six low pressure reverse osmosis (LPRO) membranes. The rejection of the two lowest molecular weight N-nitrosamines, namely N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and N-nitrosomethylethylamine (NMEA), varied in the range from 8-82% to 23-94%, respectively. In general, the rejection of NDMA and NMEA increased with decreasing membrane permeability. The impact of membrane characteristics became less important for higher molecular weight N-nitrosamines. Among the four LPRO membranes (i.e. ESPA2, LFC3, TFC-HR and 70LW) that are commonly used for water reclamation applications, similar …

Developing 'Policy Stories' For State Health System Benchmarking: A Small-N Quali-Quantitative Study, Erica Bell, Bastian Seidel Jan 2013

Developing 'Policy Stories' For State Health System Benchmarking: A Small-N Quali-Quantitative Study, Erica Bell, Bastian Seidel

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Background: The benchmarking literature has made important advances and offers many different population health indicators that can be used to compare state health systems. However, there is still a need for qualitative, complexity-oriented approaches that allow policy-makers to develop explanatory 'policy stories' from combining such indicators that are useful to policy solutions. Methods: A new qualitative method from the social sciences based on Boolean approaches, called Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), was piloted in a 'real world' policy consultancy to combine Australian state-level indicators of community and health system inputs, interventions, and population health outcomes. Analyses were provided for state inputs …

Blockade of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) produces behavior in healthy people that is similar to the psychotic symptoms and cognitive deficits of schizophrenia and can exacerbate symptoms in people with schizophrenia. However, an endogenous brain disruption of NMDARs has not been clearly established in schizophrenia. We measured mRNA transcripts for five NMDAR subunit mRNAs and protein for the NR1 subunit in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) of schizophrenia and control (n=74) brains. Five NMDAR single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously associated with schizophrenia were tested for association with NMDAR mRNAs in postmortem brain and for association with cognitive ability in an antemortem cohort …

2-Cyanoethyl N,N,N',N'-Tetraisopropylphosphorodiamidite, Jichao Zhang

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

2-Cyanoethyl N,N,N′,N′-tetraisopropylphosphorodiamidite is a colorless viscous liquid, which is soluble in most organic solvents. It is a widely used phosphitylating reagent for the preparation of various phosphorylated biomolecules, such as nucleoside carbohydrate conjugates, phospholipids and glycopeptides. In particular, this reagent is highly effective for automated solid-phase DNA/RNA oligonucleotide synthesis. 2-Cyanoethyl N,N,N′,N′-tetraisopropylphosphorodiamidite has shown great utility in the coupling of nucleobases or carbohydrates via their phosphotriesters in the presence of activators such as 1H-tetrazole, in moderate yields under mild conditions. Additionally, 2-cyanoethyl N,N,N′,N′-tetraisopropylphosphorodiamidite is cheaper and more stable than 2- cyanoethyl N,N-diisopropylchlorophosphorodiamidite, the other commonly used phosphinylating reagent. 2-Cyanoethyl N,N,N′,N′-tetraisopropylphosphorodiamidite is …

Synthesis Of Spirocyclic Azacycles From The Cyclization Of Furan Tethered N-Acyliminium Ions, Sudhir R. Shengule, Anthony Willis, Stephen G. Pyne Jan 2012

Synthesis Of Spirocyclic Azacycles From The Cyclization Of Furan Tethered N-Acyliminium Ions, Sudhir R. Shengule, Anthony Willis, Stephen G. Pyne

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The protic and Lewis acid promoted cyclization reactions of tethered furan-4,5-dihydroxypiperid-2-ones, furan-4,5-diacetoxypiperid-2-ones and furan-3,4-diacetoxypyrrolid-2-ones, via their corresponding N-acyliminium ion intermediates, have been studied. In the case of the furan-4,5-dihydroxypiperid-2-one 2a and its diacetate derivative 2b, macrocyclic products were formed from an initial intermolecular reaction between 2a or 2b, via the nucleophilic C5 furan carbon, and their corresponding N-acyliminium ion intermediates. When the furan C5 position of 2b was blocked by substitution with bromine then TFA or Sc(OTf)3 catalysed cyclization reactions gave a spirotricyclic product (a 5-6-6-tricycle) in a highly diastereoselective manner. Cyclization of the analogous C5-Br-furan-pyrrolidone 29 with TFA resulted …

Un Hombre De San Juan: Aproximación Facial En Antropología, Susan Hayes Jan 2011

Un Hombre De San Juan: Aproximación Facial En Antropología, Susan Hayes

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Within both anthropology and forensic identification, a facial approximation (also known as "facial reconstruction") is often presented as an accomplished fact, with minimal, or no evidence of the research and methods used to achieve the result. This paper presents a detailed overview of the research and methods used for a 2D computer graphic facial approximation of a prehistoric man unearthed in the Jachal Valley, San Juan Province, Argentina. Understood to be a member of the extinct Huarpe, this individual's skull displays many of the morphological features that are consistent with what is known about this group of early Amerindian farmers. …

Saturated- And N-6 Polyunsaturated-Fat Diets Each Induce Ceramide Accumulation In Mouse Skeletal Muscle: Reversal And Improvement Of Glucose Tolerance By Lipid Metabolism Inhibitors, G Frangioudakis, J Garrard, K Raddatz, J L. Nadler, Todd W. Mitchell, Carsten Schmitz-Peiffer Jan 2010

Saturated- And N-6 Polyunsaturated-Fat Diets Each Induce Ceramide Accumulation In Mouse Skeletal Muscle: Reversal And Improvement Of Glucose Tolerance By Lipid Metabolism Inhibitors, G Frangioudakis, J Garrard, K Raddatz, J L. Nadler, Todd W. Mitchell, Carsten Schmitz-Peiffer

Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Lipid-induced insulin resistance is associated with intracellular accumulation of inhibitory intermediates depending on the prevalent fatty acid (FA) species. In cultured myotubes, ceramide and phosphatidic acid (PA) mediate the effects of the saturated FA palmitate and the unsaturated FA linoleate, respectively. We hypothesized that myriocin (MYR), an inhibitor of de novo ceramide synthesis, would protect against glucose intolerance in saturated fat-fed mice, while lisofylline (LSF), a functional inhibitor of PA synthesis, would protect unsaturated fat-fed mice. Mice were fed diets enriched in saturated fat, n-6 polyunsaturated fat, or chow for 6 wk. Saline, LSF (25 mg/kg · d), or MYR …

Synthesis And In Vitro Binding Of N,N-Dialkyl-2-Phenylindol-3-Ylglyoxylamides For The Peripheral Benzodiazepine Binding Sites, T. P. Homes, F. Mattner, Paul A. Keller, A. Katsifis

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

A series of N,N-dialkyl-2-phenylindol-3-ylglyoxylamides bearing the halogens iodine and bromine were synthesised and their binding affinity for the peripheral benzodiazepine binding sites (PBBS) in rat kidney mitochondrial membranes were evaluated using [3H]-PK11195. Central benzodiazepine receptor (CBR) affinities were also evaluated in rat cortices using 3H-flumazenil to determine their selectivity for PBBS over CBR. The tested compounds had PBBS binding affinities (IC50) ranging from 7.86 nM to 618 nM, with all compounds showing high selectivity over the CBR (CBR IC50 > 5000 nM). Among the 12 compounds tested, those with a diethylamide group were the most potent. The highest affinity iodinated PBBS …

Dietary N-3 And N-6 Fatty Acids Alter Avian Metabolism: Molecular-Species Compostiton Of Breast-Muscle Phospholipids, Ronald Newman, Wayne Bryden, Eva Fleck, John R. Ashes, Leonard Storlien, Jeffery A. Downing

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The effects of diets high in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA; provided by fish oil), n-6 PUFA (sunflower oil) or in more-saturated fatty acids (tallow) on the distribution of subclasses of choline phospholipids (PC) and ethanolamine phospholipids (PE) from the breast muscle of broiler chickens were examined. Supplementation with the different fatty acids had no effect on the distribution of phospholipid subclasses. Feeding sunflower oil or tallow gave a molecular-species profile similar in both fatty acid subtype and proportion. In the diacyl PC phospholipids, 16: 0–18: 1n-9 and 16: 0–18: 2n-6 accounted for approximately …

Dietary N-3 And N-6 Fatty Acids Alter Avian Metabolism: Metabolism And Abdominal Fat Deposition, Ronald Newman, Wayne Bryden, Eva Fleck, John R. Ashes, William A. Buttemer, Leonard Storlien, Jeffery Downing

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The effects of dietary saturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of the n-3 and n-6 series on weight gain, body composition and substrate oxidation were investigated in broiler chickens. At 3 weeks of age three groups of chickens (n 30; ten birds per group) were fed the fat-enriched experimental diets for 5 weeks. These diets were isonitrogenous, isoenergetic and contained 208 g protein/kg and 80 g edible tallow, fish oil or sunflower oil/kg; the dietary fatty acid profiles were thus dominated by saturated fatty acids, n-3 PUFA or n-6 PUFA respectively. Resting RQ …
