At its best, a university is a collection of individuals ‐‐ students and faculty ‐‐ focused on learning and discovering new knowledge. For this goal to be realized, a critical element is having faculty members deeply engaged with their disciplines. Scholarship, in the form of journal articles, book chapters, monographs and similar endeavors, creative activity which can take an even wider range of forms, and funded research which explores the boundaries of their disciplines all contribute to such engagement. Through such participation, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich their intellectual …

Crime And Public Health: Interdisciplinary Approach To Education, Karen Miner-Romanoff, Leslie J. King
Crime And Public Health: Interdisciplinary Approach To Education, Karen Miner-Romanoff, Leslie J. King
Scholarship Forum 2013
Dr. Karen Miner-Romanoff and Dr. Leslie King state that although crime rates have decreased in the last several years, they remain alarmingly high. Recidivism rates, in the meantime, continue to rise with up to half of all new prison inmates incarcerated for reoffending after their initial release (Matz, et al., 2012). As the costs of a failed criminal justice system becomes unsustainable, scholars search for new evidence-based, innovative and collaborative solutions to lower crime and increased public health and safety. As a result of this collaboration, some criminal justice and public health leaders are seeking to develop new theoretical and …

Photovoice: A Visual Narrative Into The Lives Of Maine Refugee Women
IPEC Mini-grant application for funding of UNE student project Photovoice: A Visual Narrative into the Lives of Maine Refugee Women. Photovoice was proposed as a participatory action strategy which would provide Maine refugee women the opportunity to teach their community and policy makers about health and social issues they face. A UNE MSW student and MPH student sought to understand the barriers to health that Maine refugee women face. They proposed a project where participants would be given a camera to take photos of perceived health and social problems refugees face living in Maine. The photos would seek to …

A Pilot Study Of The Effect Of An Acute Vestibular Therapy On Postural Stability And Gaze Patterns Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder
Stander Symposium Projects
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) struggle with sensory regulation, resulting in abnormal gaze patterns and decreased postural stability. Sensory integration (SI) therapy is a common therapy used to help children with ASD with these issues, however, there is insufficient quantitative research concerning its effectiveness. A pilot study is currently being conducted to quantify the acute effects of a SI vestibular treatment on postural stability and gaze patterns. Both children diagnosed with ASDs and typically developing children are participating in the study, and test methods include quiet standing posturography and analysis of socially relevant visual fixations recorded by a mobile …
Understanding Chinese Students In A Global Context
Understanding Chinese Students In A Global Context
Stander Symposium Projects
Nowadays, more and more Chinese students choose to study in American higher education institutions. According to "Open Doors," the number of Chinese students enrolled at American colleges jumped 23% between 2010 and 2011, to 194,029, which is 25% of the total number of international students enrolled at American colleges. Along with that increase various challenges arise. The need to address global-centered settings becomes more and more urgent in American higher education. American universities set up curriculum and co-curriculum based on the assumption that every student has some certain knowledge or skills, which are usually lacking in the case of international …
