À La Carte Cable: A Regulatory Solution To The Misinformation Subsidy, Christopher R. Terry, Eliezer J. Silberberg, Stephen Schmitz, John Stack, Eve Sando

Catholic University Journal of Law and Technology

Although “fake news” is as old as mass media itself, concerns over disinformation have reached a fever pitch in our current media environment. Online media outlets’ heavy reliance on user-generated content has altered the traditional gatekeeping functions and professional standards associated with traditional news organizations. The idea of objectivity-focused informational content has primarily been substituted for a realist acceptance of the power and popularity of opinion-driven “news.” This shift is starkly visible now: mainstream news media outlets knowingly spread hoaxes, conspiracy theories, and the like.

This current state of affairs is not some freak accident. The Supreme Court’s First Amendment …

Enjeu Social Et Politique Du Spectacle Dans Les Médias De Masse, Taoufiq Moueddene Aug 2021

Enjeu Social Et Politique Du Spectacle Dans Les Médias De Masse, Taoufiq Moueddene

Dirassat

Today, no one can deny the impact of mass media on social change in our contemporary world. However, in parallel with their technical development, moral grievances have paradoxically multiplied, not to call them into question in a radical way, but to bring out the deep and complex nature of their relationship to the creation and shaping of a social bond of ten meaningless. The interest of a critique of the mass media thus emanates from the fact that the frenzy of their technical evolution which has grafted itself, as well on the utopia of the communication as on the democratic …

How The Mass Media Use Numbers To Tell A Story: The Case Of The Crack Scare Of 1986, Jerome L. Himmelstein

Numeracy

Scholars, notably Joel Best and Milo Schield, have emphasized the importance of incorporating social construction into the study of quantitative literacy. Studying social construction involves examining how numbers are produced, how they travel into the mass media, and how the media use them to depict a social problem or discuss an issue. This article presents a case study in the last of these. It asks in particular how important numbers really are in media constructions of a social problem. It focuses on the “Crack Scare” of 1986 in the United States and a classic study in social construction, Orcutt and …

Regional Trends In Religion And Politics, Robert Goon Jan 2000

Regional Trends In Religion And Politics, Robert Goon

The Corinthian

As mass communications close the distances over which people routinely interact, there is a question about the increase in social homogenization at the expense of regional identity. In a society covering as much geographic area and encompassing as many cultures as the United States, the question is certainly valid. Traditionally, this diversity has been recognized as a "melting pot," an analogy attempting to institutionalize a sort of homogeneous diversity; the "melting pot" analogy is now giving way to notions of multiculturalism. However, one may wonder if this social diversity can avoid being buried beneath the homogenizing mass media culture. Whether …
