Missing The Marc: Utilization Of Marc Fields In The Search Process, Liz Woolcott, Andrea Payant, Becky Skeen, Paul Daybell

Utah State University Cataloging and Metadata Services (CMS) unit analyzed MARC record discoverability within the libraries’ discovery layer, Encore, using web analytics, a web-scrapping tool, and a relational database to examine MARC records listed in users’ search results. MARC records were identified, isolated, and coded to pinpoint where search terms appeared, determine whether they were present in full or in part, and ascertain prominent fields not present in records. Analysis of results showed that notes and summaries were important for record retrieval and that users interacted with authorized name fields more frequently than authorized subject fields.

Effective collaboration between archives and technical services can increase the discoverability of special collection materials. Archivists at the University of Dayton Libraries began using Archive-It to capture websites relevant to their collecting policies in 2015. However, the collections were only made available to users from the University of Dayton page on the Archive-It website. Content was isolated in a separate platform and was not promoted to users. Achieve seamless discovery of materials by aggregating disparate data sources into a single discovery interface through the creation of pipes. We will present our process of selecting, curating, configuring, and harvesting from our institutional repository, digital collections, subject guides, and archival finding aids, in order to provide a streamlined user experience and increased discovery. This presentation will share our workflows, including mapping to Dublin Core, configuring the pipes, testing new resources in the Primo Sandbox, and then deploying in our Production instance.

The authors present their experiences implementing Summon, a web-based search engine similar to Google produced by the software company Serial Solutions, at Bowling Green State (BGSU) University Libraries (UL). The authors discuss using the teaching method of reflection, described by Char Booth in the book "Reflective Teaching, Effective Learning: Instructional Literacy for Library Educators," to train librarians, students, and faculty to use the software. The authors describe personal and group instruction, training undergraduates to use Summon for research, and alternative search tools such as the EBSCO Publishing database.

Since the development of integrated library systems (ILS) in the 1970s, the focus of developers and librarians has been on the “integrated” aspect, but with the advances in technology, the time has come for libraries to consider whether a disaggregated system would better benefit their users. This article seeks to make the argument that the design of a user-friendly public interface to library systems is ideal for partnerships with the broader search engine industry; such an approach would enable participants to harness their respective strengths while simultaneously limiting the effect of their deficiencies

The use of a discovery layer transforms the process of identifying and accessing library resources, including archival, published, and virtual historical primary sources. The content of a discovery layer database is not identical with the sum of the online catalog plus the various databases to which the library subscribes. Some kinds of historical primary sources, or their finding aids, may not be included. Discovery layer systems allow library users to obtain search results from multiple library resources and view results in a consistent format. The implementation of a discovery layer is expected to simplify users’ workflow of searching for scholarly information. Previous studies on discovery layer systems focused on functionality and content, but not quality of search results from the user’s perspective. The objective of this study was to obtain users’ assessment of search results of a discovery layer system (Ex Libris Primo®) and compare that with a widely used scholarly search tool (Google Scholar). With trends in collection development moving towards digital, streaming resources, and acquiring sets of materials, the HELIN Consortium pulled together cataloging, acquisitions and licensing information through a discovery platform. The discovery layer, in this case Innovative Interface’s Encore, harvests disparate collections and enables the library user to easily refine her search through facets. Rice Sanders described the HELIN Consortium’s Encore implementation and experiences, while McQuillan highlighted the West Bloomfield Townships Public Library use of the Encore platform and other products.
