Reimaging Information Literacy As Metaliteracy In A Credit Library Course, Vera J. Lux

To address the ways users interact with information introduced by digital technologies, many librarians have looked beyond information literacy to incorporate multiple literacies into their teaching. This presentation will highlight a credit library course that was reimagined around the comprehensive conceptual framework of metaliteracy. Discover how this approach engaged students in learning core skills, such as advanced search strategies and source evaluation, through assignments involving the use of search engines, social media, and emerging technologies.

Learn specific strategies used by librarians in a variety of roles to successfully develop coherent, campus-wide scholarly communications and information literacy initiatives. Our goal is to expand the scope and culture of collaboration around scholarly communication activities using information literacy as a lens through which to view our outreach, education and advocacy activities. Programmatic efforts to change undergraduate education, instructional activities for the classroom, and new models and roles for subject liaisons will be presented.

Library-based publishing services are increasingly common as libraries seek to provide alternatives for the dissemination of scholarly and creative work. Connecting these services to the educational mission of libraries' institutions is vital for publishing programs' success and sustainability. This panel of librarians and faculty from liberal arts colleges will discuss the educative and advocacy roles that their library publishing programs have developed, and suggest best practices for librarians wishing to implement their own publishing programs. Using faculty narratives, this study identifies factors affecting the occurrence of facultydoctoral student coauthorship. Norms of the discipline, resources, faculty goals for students, faculty goals for themselves, and institutional expectations emerged as dominant factors. Each factor is explored separately and as part of an interlocking holistic picture.
