Producing eBooks is a complex task. Although they follow the well know book metaphor, Adobe Acrobat (1) eBooks may also include audiovisual media, hyperlinking structures, other interactive content and information layers. The process of production goes through an iterative cycle, where content authors team with designers, programmers, media producers and information architects. Its then crucial to optimize this process using software tools to help structuring the content, faciliting groupworking and metadata annotation. More than just a book repository, the new library at École Polytechnique de Montréal can be better described as a hotbed of intellectual activity. The library was specifically designed to foster learning, encourage research, facilitate collaboration and stimulate new ideas through its combination of technology, information, science and culture. From spatial planning to equipment to furnishings, everything was designed around the idea of an “intellectual forum.” This article presents the process by which the idea became reality.

The purpose of this article is to describe briefly two quality evaluation models for academic libraries: the Portuguese investigation proposes an action model to measure the performance of the libraries of the Universidade do Porto (UP). It addresses the relevance of the quality assessment processes as instruments of support for managing information services. It describes the implementation of the Product and Service Quality Assessment Program (PAQ) of University of São Paulo’s Integrated Library System (SIBi/USP), reporting two phases performed so far. Phase one, performed in 2002, assessed products and services of SIBi’ libraries by means of questionnaires and interview for data collection. Five electronic questionnaires were applied comprising the SERVQUAL – tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy dimensions and an interview was applied to library users, using three questions. Two initiatives have been undertaken at Carnegie Mellon University, one to address issues of accountability relative to information literacy and the other to learn more about graduate students’ information gathering behavior. In response to changing accreditation requirements, new evidence for student learning is being required. Thus a program to concentrate on the information literacy skills of undergraduates, particularly in major fields of study, has been started. The other initiative focuses on understanding the current information gathering behaviors of graduate students. Based on a series of independent studies conducted by Dr. Anthony Breitzman of 1790 Analytics, IEEE has learned that granted patents cite scientific and the technical literature found in journal articles, conference papers and industry standards. This paper outlines the findings of three studies conducted by 1790 Analytics and discusses the implications for library professionals and members of the scientific and scholarly community. Patent citation analysis is a viable metric to quantify both usage and value of access to scholarly materials at universities, corporations and government research centres.

Much scientific research is based on the gathering and analysis of measurement data. Scientific data-sets are, at least, intermediate results in many scientific research projects. For some time data-sets weren’t even published and even if they were published it was mostly as a (not re-usable) by-product of the publication. A challenge for educators is to fuse the learning of information literacy to an academic education in such a way that the outcome is systematic and sustainable learning for students. This challenge can be answered through long-term commitment to information literacy education bound to organisation-wide, renewable strategic planning and driven through systemic reform. This paper explores the process of reforming information literacy education in an academic environment, drawing on the experiences of one Australian university which has undertaken the implementation of a strategic, systemic approach to information literacy learning and teaching.

What, if any, are the benefits of having librarians attend lectures and seminars? In the midst of a start-up program, the librarians at the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar were challenged to test new models of active participation while demonstrating positive outcomes. This paper describes the setting, methods, and outcomes associated with having librarians attend courses as active members in an evolving learning environment.
