Fighting Censorship In America, Who Are The Real Censors?, Dennis Ingolfsland Jan 2003

Fighting Censorship In America, Who Are The Real Censors?, Dennis Ingolfsland

The Christian Librarian

During the last half of the 20'11 century, the American Library Association- through the Office of Intellectual Freedom, the Freedom to Read Foundation and the Intellectual Freedom Action Network (ALAs Office 1995, 13) has emerged as one of America's leading opponents of censorship and advocates of free speech. The American Library Association's opposition to censorship is so absolute that it stands firmly against any library restrictions on access to books, magazines or internet sites even by children (Intellectual 1996, 84-94; cf. Berry 1998, 6; Mason 1997, I 04). There is some evidence, however, to suggest that there is a gap …

Plagiarism On The Internet, John Jaeger Jan 2003

Plagiarism On The Internet, John Jaeger

The Christian Librarian

This article addresses the problem of plagiarism on the Internet and offers practical guidelines and instructions for dealing with that problem. While technology-based tools such as plagiarism detection services are discussed, primary focus is given to stopping plagiarism before it occurs. Prevention ahead of time is considered far better than detection later in time. Good prevention techniques involve educating the faculty in terms of how they can better "plagiarism-proof' their assignments, and encouraging the administration to create academic plagiarism policies, academic integrity codes, and Christian academic policy statements. This article developed from a workshop presentation made at the 2002 Association …

Expanding Our Boundaries With Technology, Kate F. Nevins Jan 2003

Expanding Our Boundaries With Technology, Kate F. Nevins

The Christian Librarian

"When Kate first came to speak at the ACL Conference at Lee University, I think I'm not exaggerating by saying we fell in love with her and she fell in love with us. We enjoyed her and her enthusiasm and she enjoyed us. I was trying to figure out what I was going to plan for another general session at this year's conference and about that time Steve Preston sent me a note saying, 'Just got a note from Kate, and she is so excited that ACL was coming back here and she wanted to come to the conference. Was …

Job Searching In The New Millennium, Linda L. Jones Jan 2003

Job Searching In The New Millennium, Linda L. Jones

The Christian Librarian

Electronic technology has changed the jobs of librarians and it has changed some of the ways we obtain those jobs. E-Mail and list servs have proven to be valuable assets in networking and encouragement for those seeking jobs. What was once a laborious and often relatively isolated activity has now developed into a national and even international support group of fellow professionals who will pray and provide assistance in the job search.

Resources which once could only be found through small ads in the professional journals, if then, are now available almost instantaneously. Job announcements can be scanned the same …

The Christy Award: Excellence In Christian Fiction, An Annotated Bibliography, Rachel Schwedt Jan 2003

The Christy Award: Excellence In Christian Fiction, An Annotated Bibliography, Rachel Schwedt

The Christian Librarian

The burgeoning interest in Christian fiction that has marked recent years has brought with it a proliferation of new writers who are trying to make their way into the mainstream market. Alongside this growth has come a need to establish guidelines that would encourage a high standard of quality in the field. The Christian publishing industry itself responded to this challenge in 1999 by establishing an award that would identify novels and novelists of excellence. By acknowledging authors worthy of note, they hoped to encourage both creativity and quality in writing, broaden readership of the genre, and bring recognition and …

New Frontiers In Christian Fiction, Leanne Hardy Jan 2003

New Frontiers In Christian Fiction, Leanne Hardy

The Christian Librarian

Christian fiction must strive for a new quality of writing and be willing to go beyond what is "safe" if it is going to have an impact outside the church. Although such fiction may include language and situations that are not acceptable among Christians, it will glorify God by presenting the world as he sees it and grappling with deep spiritual issues rather than using cliches to brush over them. Librarians should support quality Christian fiction by purchasing it, recommending it and praying for those in the publishing industry.

Collegiality: An Atmosphere For Expanding Intellectual Stimulation, Tami Echavarria Robinson Jan 2003

Collegiality: An Atmosphere For Expanding Intellectual Stimulation, Tami Echavarria Robinson

The Christian Librarian

Libraries are the arena where intellectual interaction takes place through the universal conversation of scholarship. Librarians share a common commitment to learning and service. In addition Christian librarians share a calling to knowledge and service that comes from the Holy Scriptures. Aspects of integrating our Christian faith, through the professional environment we create in our workplace, are considered. Collegiality as the means to achieve a productive library ambience for scholarship is suggested. When a Library has an atmosphere conducive to promoting learning it is a place of intellectual stimulation where the culture is collegial and the values of Christianity are …

A good job search starts with writing resumes and references. Choosing the type of resume to send and the references to list are crucial to the application. Other often neglected items include the cover letter and thank you letters, which contribute to a successful job search.

Confronting The Challenge Of Information Literacy, Steven L. Baker

The Christian Librarian

Confronting the challenges to any academic institution posed by the revolution in information resources since the appearance of the Internet can be a daunting task. Providing the financial and human resources required to provide reliable and secure access can alone be a major hurdle. The specialized equipment needed to effectively incorporate the new resources into student learning environments present an additional burden. The need to collaboratively manage the systems and adapt staffing patterns to the new resources can challenge the skills of the best administrators. The patterns of information seeking behavior exhibited by students in today's richly diverse information environment …
