Digital information resources are a vitally important and increasingly large component of academic libraries’ collection and preservation responsibilities. This includes content converted to and originating from digital form (born-digital). Preserving digital material, such as social media and websites, is essential for ensuring that future generations know everyone’s story, especially those groups which have been historically underrepresented in official records. This presentation will detail the steps undertaken by a digital preservation task force to first assess the weaknesses in current practice, and then develop a plan to implement a digital preservation policy and workflow. On this residential campus, the library has found ways to connect students with the surrounding community via primary sources. In one workshop, students researched the campus neighborhoods, as they were once home to working class families, but are now primarily occupied by students. As a way to empower students pursuing careers in education, social justice, community service, and other fields with modest salary expectations, the library at the University of Dayton partnered with a local credit union to create a program to help students develop money management skills while still in college. Called "Becoming an Adult on a Shoestring Budget," the series stresses making the most of one's money by developing a workable budget, using credit responsibly, and building an excellent credit score. To improve the quality of semester-long policy projects of upper-division political science students, a faculty member and research librarian collaborated to reframe the assignment in hopes of improving students’ research skills and information literacy, revising the traditional one-way model of faculty sending students to the library to get information. The outcomes over the course of two semesters have been promising. Citations in two sets of student papers showed a remarkable increase in the number and quality of sources used. This suggests that when faculty work with librarians throughout the semester, such collaboration can improve students’ information literacy and thus their …

In the summer of 2017, the Marian Library—a special library devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary within the larger University of Dayton Libraries system—completed a move of its rare book and archival collections into a new space within the main library building. The space, previously leased to the Society of Mary provincial archives, was already outfitted with a Liebert system for temperature and humidity controls, as well as shelving and some furniture.

Prior to the move, the rare book collection and archival holdings were stored in less than ideal conditions. In 2014, a consultant from Lyrasis conducted a preservation assessment …

In 2014, a university’s housing and residence life department implemented a program to provide students with a series of learning goals to master by graduation, including authorship, interculturalism, community living and more.

The program is connected to the housing assignment process and is called PATH, “Points Accumulated Towards Housing.” By participating in approved events, students accumulate “points” and secure higher priority within the housing assignments process.

This university’s library participates as a campus program partner by hosting PATH-eligible events. As a result, student engagement at library events has exceeded expectations. This poster will share attendance and event data from 20 …

This panel describes how the University of Dayton planned and carried out an exhibit on the John Stokes and Mary’s Gardens archival collection, featuring a garden inside the library. A “Mary garden” is a garden filled with flowers named for Mary.

The panel describes the content of the collection and how the exhibit was originally conceived; the exhibit design and programming; and the challenges faced during the planning process.
