Libraries can use Foursquare to reward frequent visitors. Using mobile phones to check in, visitors use Foursquare to share their locations with friends as well as unlock special offers available at a location. Frequent visitors can become "mayors," thanks to algorithms, and locations can reward their mayors as they see fit. Our student government association suggested a semester-long contest for the chance to win a highly-coveted individual study room in the library during finals week. The library answered this request and hosted the contest with Foursquare. After launching the "V.I.P. Room" deal, check-ins at the library on Foursquare increased 992%. …

Get an uncensored look at what people are saying about your library and provide responsive service using Twitter. For two years, tweets about and to a library Twitter account have been responded to, saved, and analyzed, revealing attitudes towards the library that were previously unknown. Once the library Twitter account began responding to tweets, the tweets about the library increased as did the number of the account followers (up 500%). Tenure And Promotion Experiences Of Academic Librarians Of Color, Ione T. Damasco, Dracine Hodges

This study broadly examines factors impacting work-life experiences of library faculty of color within the framework of tenure policies and processes. An online survey was sent out to academic librarians of color to gauge perceptions of tenure and promotion policies and processes, professional activities and productivity, organizational climate and culture, and job satisfaction and retention. Results of the survey showed mixed findings regarding the impact of race on the tenure and promotion process. Findings can be used to inform future discussions of recruitment and retention for academic librarians of color and to improve the overall tenure experience.
