Rethinking Reference Resources: Redesigning A Roman Catholic Reading Room, Henry M. Handley Jun 2023

Rethinking Reference Resources: Redesigning A Roman Catholic Reading Room, Henry M. Handley

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

In this presentation, audiences learned about how collection assessment, strategic collection development, and curation of art and books on display redesigned the reading room of an historically Roman Catholic special collection. Library workers sought to better represent the diverse faith traditions, scholarship, and creative activity the library supports and better serve the variety of researchers who use the space, from first-year undergraduates in library instruction sessions to faculty and independent researchers. The presentation asked audiences to consider the positionality of their own institutional public spaces and visible collections and to identify tools to facilitate radically welcoming, multidisciplinary learning in them.

In, Not Of, The Library: Queer Library/Archives Workers And Catholic Collections, Henry M. Handley Aug 2021

In, Not Of, The Library: Queer Library/Archives Workers And Catholic Collections, Henry M. Handley

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

For library and archives workers at institutions without a religious affiliation, the parallel world of Catholic librarianship may never surface. Even at Catholic academic institutions, workers in some positions may not fully realize that under the surface, a click or two away from a CFP, are entire Catholic library subject classification schemes, professional organizations, journals, #CatholicTwitter circles, and conferences that prohibit “scandalous” materials -a potentially treacherous sphere to be queer and trans. What does it mean for LGBTQ+ library and archives workers to collect, describe, preserve, and even teach with Catholic materials and collections that silence or condemn us? Is …

Citizen Web Archiving: Empowering Undergraduates To Preserve The Internet, Kayla Harris, Stephanie Shreffler, Christina A. Beis

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

Increasingly, information that was once available in print is now available only online. There are many efforts by librarians to teach students how to evaluate sources, but in order to do that, the sources need to still exist. While librarians and archivists preserve information from the Internet through web archive collections, undergraduate students of this generation may not have considered that things on the Internet do not necessarily remain there forever, and that preservation requires a proactive approach. Through a co-curricular learning experience, a team of librarians and archivists created a self-guided, asynchronous program, Citizen Web Archiving: Preserving Websites for …

Identity, Harm, And Hate In Special Collections, Henry M. Handley Oct 2020

Identity, Harm, And Hate In Special Collections, Henry M. Handley

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

LIS studies of diversity, equity, and inclusion frequently separate workplace interpersonal issues from collections issues, divorcing organizational culture from organizational collections, especially in special collections. Weeding harmful or hateful materials from circulating collections can lead to their transfer to special collections, where library and archives workers as well as their users can be impacted. This presentation addresses assumptions of an unmarginalized, neutral, and impervious arbiter in special collections and suggests solutions to give special collections workers and users agency and accommodation in the types of materials they are asked to handle, based in scholarship from BIPOC, LGBTQ, and disabled library …

Shrines And Pilgrimages: Documenting Mary's Role In The Pandemic, Kayla Harris Apr 2020

Shrines And Pilgrimages: Documenting Mary's Role In The Pandemic, Kayla Harris

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

A 1997 special report in Scientific American claimed that the average lifespan of a website was only 44 days. A study in 2001 put that at 75 days, while a 2003 article indicated 100 days. Everything on the Internet doesn’t last forever. The Marian Library has collected material related to the Blessed Virgin Mary since its founding in 1943. Increasingly, some of the material that would have once been printed, and possibly made their way to the Marian Library archives, is now being shared only electronically. Things like shrine Mass schedules, news articles, or blog posts are available on websites, …

Mary, Queen Of Style: Documenting Catholic Modest Fashion In Special Collections, Jillian M. Ewalt

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

In postwar America, Catholic teenage girls found themselves at the center of a debate. Everyone, it seemed, had a different opinion about what kind of clothing they should wear. Two modest fashion movements emerged that aimed to solve this problem. Supply the Demand for the Supply (SDS) was a lay initiative founded by teenage girls in the Midwest that quickly spread into a national Catholic youth movement. Meanwhile, the Marilyke Crusade, orchestrated by parish priest Father Bernard Kunkel and the Purity Crusade of Mary Immaculate, promulgated and sold modest clothing based on a particular brand of fear-mongering, Fatima-centric Marian devotion. …

Engaging With Difficult Topics In The Archives: Suicide And Historical Empathy, Kayla Harris

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

The development of historical empathy in students is a desired learning outcome in many history curriculums. Although historical empathy is written about frequently in educational literature, it is not addressed in archival journals. The integration of "historical empathy" into archival pedagogy is rich with opportunities. Three archivists discuss their successful collaborations with educators to develop archival projects that incorporate empathy development in a wide range of academic settings.

Presented as part of a panel.

Catholic Documents 101: A Theological Librarian’S Guide To Identifying, Locating, And Using The Documents Of The Catholic Church, Andrew Kosmowski

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

Over the course of 2,000 years, theologians have accreted mountains of writings on every aspect of the Christian faith. While even devoted students of Christian doctrine likely will not have time to scale all of the peaks in a single academic lifetime, they cannot afford to skip completely over one of the highest summits: the documents of the “teaching arm” of the Catholic Church, the Magisterium, which safeguards the deposit of faith and interprets controversies in light of it. Those approaching doctrinal matters, such as the atonement and the virgin birth, from a Protestant perspective may find it beneficial to …

Bringing Students To The Archives, Kayla Harris, Stephanie Shreffler

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

Six librarians and archivists at the University of Dayton taught an archives “mini-course” to introduce students to archival theory and concepts while providing them with a deeper understanding of the history of the university and the city of Dayton. The one-credit class covered concepts including visual literacy, representation in the archives, privacy, and historical empathy. Students researched an archival collection from UD’s special collections, placing the collection within its historical context. They submitted a final project consisting of a poster presentation of their research, a bibliography, and a reflection.

Through this course, the librarians and archivists intended to increase students’ …

A Change Would Do You Good: Transforming Archives With Cross-Sector Perspectives, Kayla Harris Mar 2018

A Change Would Do You Good: Transforming Archives With Cross-Sector Perspectives, Kayla Harris

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

The various “sectors” of archives and related professions, whether functional or institutional, increasingly diverge from each other in priorities, strategies, and constituencies. For the archivist or records manager changing positions across sectors, however, an opportunity exists to bring skills and insights learned in previous field(s) to transform the work being done in these new places. Cross-sector experiences also give archivists and records managers an opportunity to reflect on how their transitions have transformed their outlook on the profession as a whole, and their role within it. In this lightning round session, eight archivists will share how prior experience in a …

Looking Forward To Look Back: Digital Preservation Planning, Jennifer Brancato, Kayla Harris Oct 2017

Looking Forward To Look Back: Digital Preservation Planning, Jennifer Brancato, Kayla Harris

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

Digital information resources are a vitally important and increasingly large component of academic libraries’ collection and preservation responsibilities. This includes content converted to and originating from digital form (born-digital). Preserving digital material, such as social media and websites, is essential for ensuring that future generations know everyone’s story, especially those groups which have been historically underrepresented in official records. This presentation will detail the steps undertaken by a digital preservation task force to first assess the weaknesses in current practice, and then develop a plan to implement a digital preservation policy and workflow. As part of the project, the task …

Separating The Wheat From The Chaff: Intensive Deselection To Enable Preservation And Access, Colleen Hoelscher, Jillian M. Ewalt

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

In 2014, the Marian Library at the University of Dayton completed a long overdue revision of its collection development policy. The new document more clearly defined the scope of the library’s collections, and was intended to guide new acquisition decisions. However, this new document had the unexpected benefit of providing a framework for deselection projects that enabled preservation and improved access to the collections.

This paper will discuss and analyze two of these projects, and demonstrate how the revised collection development policy laid the foundation for successful deselection outcomes. In the first case study, legacy collections of genre-based ephemera were …

Online Access To American Diocesan Archives: Current State And Lessons For Other Repositories, Colleen Hoelscher Aug 2016

Online Access To American Diocesan Archives: Current State And Lessons For Other Repositories, Colleen Hoelscher

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

A 1997 circular letter from the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Patrimony of the Church said that “In the mind of the Church, archives are places of memory of the Christian community and storehouses of culture for the new evangelization.” As a tool for the evangelizing mission of the Church, it is vital that diocesan archives, as the official repositories of the American Catholic Church, are accessible to scholarly researchers and other patrons. A survey of diocesan archives examined how this category of archival repository is making information about their collections available on the internet. Diocesan websites were surveyed to …

Creative Collaboration: Maximizing Resources For Multi-Collection Exhibits, Jillian M. Slater, Nichole M. Rustad

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

This presentation illustrates the collaborative, multi-format approach used in preparing an exhibit of archival materials on the 1913 Dayton flood at the University of Dayton Libraries. Originally formed due to the absence of a University Archivist, the small planning committee was able to combine areas of expertise including archives, history, graphic design, video/audio production, marketing, and digitization. The collaborative process facilitated a creative approach resulting in a unique, interactive exhibit utilizing audio, video, original materials, reproductions, a permanent digital component, and a discussion panel event. The presenters will also discuss how the planning committee maximized available resources (without a budget) …
