Strengthening Students’ Information Literacy Skills As They Develop Original Research Proposals In A Scientific Process Course, Kimberly A. Reycraft, Nora E. Demers

Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research

Scientific Process is a required course for all undergraduate science majors at FGCU. In this course, students develop original research proposals on topics of their interest. Information literacy skills are critical as students must be able to use multiple sources of information to develop their proposals. Biology and library faculty have collaborated to add instruction and assignments addressing research question development, search strategy, citation management, and more. Our goal is to improve students’ information literacy skills as well as the quality and quantity of citations in their final proposals. We will present on this initiative and our preliminary assessment results.

Grow Your Own Academic Library Scholarly Communication Program, Barbara G. Tierney, Lee Dotson, Buenaventura (Ven) Basco, John Venecek, Sarah A. Norris

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

How does an academic library go about growing its own Scholarly Communication (SC) program with no budget, no staff, no dedicated office space, no partners, and no experience? The University of Central Florida Libraries responded to such a challenge during 2012-15 by creating a grassroots SC program staffed by a volunteer 20-member library faculty advisory group and creating an innovative “Research Lifecycle” model to help define an evolving menu of SC resources and services that could be turned on, as available, to UCF constituents.

Presentation for the Florida Library Association 2016 Annual Conference.

An Investigation Of Information Literacy Of International Graduate Students: Skills, Challenges, And Needs, Yousef Ayoub Jan 2016

An Investigation Of Information Literacy Of International Graduate Students: Skills, Challenges, And Needs, Yousef Ayoub

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Information literacy at higher education institutions is an important issue at the local and national levels. In 2000, the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) created a set of information literacy standards and asked academic institutions to incorporate them into their college curricula (ACRL, 2000). The ACRL states that, to be considered information literate, a person must be able to recognize when information is needed and be able to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information (ACRL, 2000). Academic institutions follow these standards to teach their students information literacy skills and assist them to become lifelong learners. Library …
