Sixty-eight institutions in the SCELC Consortium signed a Springer Nature Open Access or "transformative agreement" starting in 2023. This presentation will take a look at the SCELC publishing data leading up to the agreement from 2018 to 2022, and also a look at the publishing data for 2023ytd, in order to study the effects of such an agreement. The 2023 data carries an explicit comparison of downloads of the open access papers published with SCELC authors to the closed access papers published by non-SCELC authors in the same journals for the same period of time. Open Science aims to make research publicly available— from the data collected and methods used, to peer review processes and educational materials. Open science emerged in the late 20th century as a way to formalize the practice that scientists had ostensibly engaged in for centuries, and where the newly-formed internet could house materials for others to access. Principles of open science include Open Data, Open Source, Open Methodology, Open Peer Review, Open Access, and Open Educational Resources. This short presentation will summarize the position of our publishing house in light of the Plan S statements, and review concrete actions taken in light of Plan S as of the date of the NYSCILIB 2019 event. To jump-start the careers of graduate students and postdocs in the fields of engineering, math and the physical sciences, Cornell University Library held a free workshop, “Research From Start to Publish,” in January 2019. Librarians and guest faculty members led sessions on topics including intellectual property, writing/presentation skills, data management, and productivity tools. Faculty journal editors discussed how to get published, open access experts discussed “Why not Publish in arXiv and Be Done,” and librarians highlighted the wealth of library resources in the session “$2.5 Million-a-Year Worth of Information at Your Fingertips.”

Undergraduate biology students at St. John Fisher College have several opportunities to engage with the concept of Scholarly Publishing and consequently three different frames from the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education; Information Creation as a Process, Information Has Value, and Scholarship as Conversation. This is accomplished at three different points in the biology undergraduate curriculum. First, all students enrolled in general biology complete an exercise on open access, article processing charges, submission styles and other author instructions for several different publications. Many competing claims have been made about the time and expense of maintaining different discovery tools in the academic library setting. Analysis of traffic, visits, and views may be inadequate data to focus this discussion. Analysis of high impact referrals, those that lead directly to downloads and denials, is more meaningful. Downloads are an indicator of worth, as are denials. This brief session will outline what a major STM publisher looks for in the profile of the discovery layer of its academic clients.

The conservation field has articulated the importance of publishing our research to disseminate information and further the aims of conservation. Article X of AIC’s Code of Ethics states that conservators should “contribute to the evolution and growth of the profession, a field of study that encompasses the liberal arts and the natural sciences” in part by “sharing of information and experience with colleagues, adding to the profession’s written body of knowledge.” Our Guidelines for Practice state “the conservation professional should recognize the importance of published information that has undergone formal peer review,” because, as Commentary 2.1 indicates, “publication in peer-reviewed …
