The Internet And Reference Services: A Real-World Test Of Internet Utility, Joseph Zumalt, Robert Pasicznyuk

Joseph R. Zumalt

Many libraries now provide Internet access for their patrons and staff or are planning to do so. The push toward Internet access in libraries is proceeding despite the fact that establishing and supporting access is time-consuming, expensive, and fraught with political and policy implications. How useful is the Internet in carrying out the demands of contemporary libraries? Given that library budgets are finite with extreme demands for diversified collections and services, what gains, if any should library professionals expect from the investment in network connectivity? This study seeks to test the Internet's effectiveness at an important facet of library practice-answering …

Maximizing The Web For Serialists: New Tools For A New Millennium: Using The Web For The Public [Preconference Report], Elizabeth Parang, Michelle Flinchbaug, Robb Waltner

Elizabeth Parang

The Web can be a great tool for bibliographic instruction, publicizing a library's collection and increasing its use. It is also invaluable for serials-related reference work. This session looked at how public services librarians and other serialists with similar responsibilities can make the Web work for them. Participants created a professional or departmental home page that could be used in serials-oriented public services. Techniques covered included using various search engines, embedding third-party search engines into a Web page, using lists and tables, simple forms and some of the newer and less common HTML tags.

Legal Literature In Nigeria - An Overview, Yemisi Dina Dec 1997

Legal Literature In Nigeria - An Overview, Yemisi Dina

Yemisi Dina

The Nigerian legal system is based on the English legal system. It is also characterised by multiple legal systems as Nigeria is made up of 36 states and over 200 ethnic dialects. The multiple legal system is made up of federal and state laws as well as customary laws, which unfortunately have little or no written records.

Legal literature in any jurisdiction is made up of primary and secondary sources of law. Primary sources include legislation and law reports while secondary sources are textbooks, encyclopedias, practice books, periodicals, long essays/theses, digests, indexes and audio-visuals.
