Peer Research Tutors Articulate The Value Of Information Inquiry, Jennifer Schwartz
Peer Research Tutors Articulate The Value Of Information Inquiry, Jennifer Schwartz
Staff Publications - University Libraries
The University Library’s FY23 Assessment Report examines the Learning Outcome: Students attending DePaul University Library instruction sessions, workshops, and engaging with its services will be able to articulate the value of information inquiry. This year, we chose to evaluate a segment of our student employees who work at our research help desks, our Peer Research Tutors. Each was asked to write a reflection answering three prompts about how they help other students navigate the research process. These responses were evaluated for how strongly the answers showed an understanding of the value of information inquiry. Six of eight Peer Research Tutors …

Climate Surveys and Reports
In the fall of 2021, the DePaul University Library and Art Museum’s IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility) Committee decided to conduct a survey of the library’s climate to establish a baseline for its work. The survey was sent to all full and part-time library staff and ran for six weeks. One of the goals of the IDEA committee is to bring awareness of implicit biases, micro-aggressions, exclusionary practices, and structural racism and discrimination within Library and Art Museum operations, environment, and culture; to review, audit and propose internal polices and processes for the Library and Art Museum to implement IDEA …

The University Library assessed diversity in the book collection by comparing lists of diversity-related award-winning titles to our holdings. Of 618 total titles under consideration, the DePaul University Library holds 281 (45%). By genre, the library holds 37% of the available fiction titles (75 of 202), 54% of the non-fiction titles (185 of 345), and 30% of the poetry titles (21 of 71).
While it’s not guaranteed that all of these award winners match our collection needs or scope, we can take some simple steps to share awareness of these and similar books so that librarians can easily browse the …

From Survey To Social Network: Building New Services Through Connections, Heather Jagman, Ana Lucic

Still relatively new at many educational institutions, Digital Scholarship and Data Services Librarian positions frequently require the appointees to find novel ways of expanding current services and exploring new initiatives. To better understand the needs of our institution, we initiated two information gathering processes involving faculty, our key stakeholders. We will share what we learned as we developed and conducted our 2017 digital scholarship needs assessment survey, which preceded 24 in-depth interviews with faculty members, and the larger trends that emerged from the survey as well as the themes uncovered by the interview process. Each of these research strategies made …

In this year-long study, the Instruction Working Group investigated DePaul’s transfer student population and their past and current experiences with libraries and research. In addition to a literature review, we gathered information from campus partners who support transfer students, surveyed community college librarians from our top feeder schools, and conducted focus groups with current DePaul transfer students. Based on our findings, we developed a multi-step plan to work towards ensuring that all DePaul students, both native and transfer, graduate with comparable levels of information competency.

By striking up relationships with unlikely, but strategic, partners on campus, Library Director Scott Walter at DePaul University has poised the library to provide crucial services that support high-level, strategic institutional goals such as increasing enrollment and bringing in more research funding. During the webinar, he’ll talk about some of the strategic partnerships he’s formed, provide tips on getting repository services out there, and share some best practices that he’s learned along the way.

“I Felt Like Such A Freshman”: First-Year Students Crossing The Library Threshold
Staff Publications - University Libraries
Qualitative analysis of reflective essays by first-year students in an academic skills course documented outcomes related to the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Student narratives showed how novices encounter the clusters of concepts described in the Framework as “Scholarship as Conversation,” “Searching as Strategic Exploration,” and “Research as Inquiry.” Assessing students’ metacognition—that is, their thinking about the learning process—revealed that they connected personal identity with academic conversations, developed strategies for exploring subject classification, and balanced persistence with help-seeking. The open-ended exercise was effective as a collaborative approach to academic engagement and information …

Creating Audience And Environment-Friendly Research Guides: Findings From A User Study, Jessica Alverson, James Lefager, Jennifer Schwartz, Amelia Brunskill
Staff Publications - University Libraries
Like many libraries, our institution had relied on a one-size-fits-all model for our subject research guides without considering the various audiences using our guides, or the different contexts in which students encounter those guides. Learn about our user study that explored how students use these guides, and where they fit into the actual research process. We will discuss how we engaged librarians and created a new model that balances diverse research needs and expectations.

The LibGuides Subcommittee conducted a qualitative user study of the DePaul University Library’s Research Guides during the Fall 2013 quarter. This exempt study received approval from the Institutional Review Board and included 15 participants from different age ranges and student roles within the university. This user study investigated how users actually perceive, navigate through, and use these guides. The results of the user study will help us determine better ways to meet student needs through further development of the research guides.

Independent learning activities, when coupled with reflection, are effective in providing an orientation to the library in particular and “academic life” in general. After participating in a self-guided library activity and reflecting on the process, students in DePaul’s First Year Experience program are able to articulate how the library can contribute to their success as academic learners.

The Embedded Librarian: Best Practices For Teaching Research Online., Melissa Koenig

Experience shows that teaching students how to conduct scholarly research is a daunting task in any environment, but this task can prove even more difficult when conducted completely online. Providing students with library instruction greatly enhances their ability to produce quality research projects but providing this instruction in the online environment can prove challenging. This best practice session will look at how DePaul University, with a growing number of online programs, provides embedded librarian services to both its online graduate and undergraduate research classes.
DePaul has found that the embedded librarian model requires a high level of cooperation between the …

Out Googling Google: Rethinking Library Instruction For Online Students, Melissa Koenig
Staff Publications - University Libraries
Providing students with library instruction greatly enhances their ability to produce quality research projects, but providing that instruction to students enrolled in online courses can be challenging. While the number of electronic resources available remotely for distance students continues to grow, there is evidence that students still need assistance and instruction on how to identify and evaluate resources for relevance to their own work. This best practice session will look at how DePaul University, with a growing number of online programs, is rethinking how library instruction is delivered to students at a distance.

DePaul's School of Education was the first implementation of a Needs Assessment designed jointly by the university's Instructional Technology Development (ITD) area and the University Libraries. The goals for the Needs Assessment were to identify areas in which an expanded, unified and comprehensive faculty development training and support package would both address faculty's perceived needs while also improving adoption of existing instructional technologies and/or services. The Library's education bibliographer and the ITD consultant for education interviewed faculty representing a cross section of departments and programs as well as technological expertise. The results were analyzed; issues were sorted according to faculty …
