Writing The History Of Spanish Studies At Hunter College: A Case Study Of Original Archival Research By Undergraduate Students, Jennifer Newman, María Hernández-Ojeda

This essay, a collaboration between an English and humanities librarian (Newman) and a professor of Spanish language and literature (Hernández-Ojeda), describes original archival research performed in an undergraduate course on early-twentieth-century Spanish literature in the fall of 2019. In this course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE), students engaged in both the reading and writing of institutional history at Hunter College-CUNY, using material from Hunter’s Archives along with other primary and secondary sources. Collaborating in research teams, the undergraduate scholars investigated topics related to Spanish studies at the college during the period covered by the course.

A Lexical And Syntactic Study Of Research Article Titles In Library Science And Scientometrics, Junli Diao
Publications and Research
Title of a research article is an abstract of the abstract. Titles play a decisive role in convincing readers at first sight whether articles are worth reading or not. Not only do research article titles show how carefully words are chosen by authors, but also reflect disciplinary differences in terms of title words and structure between hard sciences and soft sciences. This study examined the lexical density and syntactic structure of 690 research article titles chosen from five Library Science and Scientometrics journals, aiming to reveal disciplinary differences. The result suggested both Library Science and Scientometrics have almost the same …

The Zine Union Catalog, Lauren S. Kehoe, Jenna Freedman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Lauren Kehoe and Jenna Freedman have been working on the Zine Union Catalog, aka ZineCat or ZUC, since their Introduction to Digital Humanities course in Spring, 2017: MALS 75500, Digital Humanities Methods and Practices. ZineCat is the home of a union catalog dedicated to zines. A union catalog is a resource where libraries and other cultural institutions that collect materials can share cataloging and holdings information from their individual collections. The most familiar union catalog is probably WorldCat which is used to locate books, journals, CDs, DVDs, and other materials in the world’s libraries. ZineCat facilitates researchers' discovery of zine …

A Promising Partnership: An Undergraduate Intern And Librarian Collaborate On Research Guides And Collection Development, Lee Ann Fullington, Alexandra Torres

Though library science internships for undergraduates are not as well documented as those for MLIS students, internships for undergraduates can be impactful for both the intern and the library. Undergraduate students have firsthand, immersive experience with their major curriculum, and this expertise can benefit science librarians making collection development decisions and creating content for research guides. This article discusses two such projects undertaken by an undergraduate mathematics major as part of a science librarianship internship.

This article examines the usability testing of a responsively redesigned library Web site. Responsive design provides a unified user experience regardless of the device used to view a site. The study's aim is twofold: to determine if the responsively designed site and its external online services support users’ information seeking needs, and to discover if there is a singular experience across different devices. A cognitive walkthrough was the main testing instrument used in gathering input. Over two rounds of testing, students of various class years and technological skill from the New York City of Technology (City Tech), CUNY participated in …

Pulp Poets And Superhero Prophets: A Case For Popular Culture In Academic Library Collection Development, William Blick

For decades, popular culture was neglected and frowned upon by academics. In recent years, cultural critics, including librarians, have found popular culture materials to be didactic tools, and vital to the study of society and the zeitgeist that has prevailed at the time of their production. With diligence and research, academic collection development managers may choose materials that will enhance the role of popular culture in their libraries
