Developing Research Data Management Services In A Regional Comprehensive University: The Case Of Central Washington University, Ping Fu, Maurice Blackson, Maura Valentino

Library Scholarship

This study aims to analyze the needs of researchers in a regional comprehensive university for research data management services; discuss the options for developing a research data management program at the university; and then propose a phased three-year implementation plan for the university libraries. The method was to design a survey to collect information from researchers and assess and evaluate their needs for research data management services. The results show that researchers’ needs in a regional comprehensive university could be quite different from those of researchers in a research-intensive university. Also, the results verify the hypothesis that researchers in the …

Active Collections, Passive Collecting: Revitalizing Library Displays To Diversify Collections & Increase Student Engagement, Erin A. Sulla, Wendy Lee Spaček, Bridgette Flamenco, Elizabeth Kuykendall

Library Scholarship

After a year of limited outreach and collection development activities due to COVID, staff and librarians at one university revitalized their library displays to both address gaps in the collection and increase student engagement with monographs. By activating the collection through monthly themed displays, librarians have increased holdings related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, thus improving representation on the shelves. Participants will discover how active displays that incorporate both academic and recreational holdings can serve a dual purpose as collection development and outreach activities, making the most of limited funds for monograph acquisitions. Attendees from academic and public libraries should …

From Support To Solidarity: Recognizing The Nonhierarchical Mentoring Environment Within, Bridgette Flamenco, Wendy Lee Spaček, Erin A. Sulla

Library Scholarship

The 2021 Washington Library Association (WLA) Conference’s shift from in-person to virtual was a decision that felt appropriate and not at all surprising, given the uncertainty surrounding large in-person events due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We, a group of three early-career librarians at Central Washington University (CWU), had been eager to set off on a mini road trip together to bond, gain insight into the field of librarianship, and network with our peers at other institutions. When the conference changed to a virtual format, we decided to make a collaborative document to share our notes on the conference sessions, …

Connections In Information Literacy Responses: Il In The Undergraduate University Experience, Elizabeth H. Brown, Lauren Wittek, Mattias Olshausen

Library Scholarship

This study was conducted at a four-year state university to compare differences in information literacy knowledge between students at the first-year, sophomore, junior, and senior levels. The survey included questions about reading habits, library usage, and information literacy knowledge, and was shared with 10,967 students with a 15.7% response rate. Analysis of the responses found reduced participation from sophomores, a positive relationship between required course use of the library and actual use of the library, a positive relationship between library exposure and accuracy of responses, and other academic connections to information skills.

Research Data Service: Current State And Future Plan For Cwu, Ping Fu

Library Scholarship

Today, more and more academic libraries provide or plan to provide library-based research data services (RDS). There are two major reasons: (1) science becomes more collaborative, data-intensive, and computational, and academic researchers face a series of data management needs; (2) research funding agencies require researchers to provide data management plans when they apply for a grant and publishers also require researchers to provide data when publishing research results. Tenopir, C. et al. (2014) pointed out that “academic libraries may be ideal centers for research data service activities on campuses, providing unique opportunities for academic libraries to become even more active …

Naps And Sleep Deprivation: Why Academic Libraries Should Consider Adding Nap Stations To Their Services For Students, Mary Wise

Library Scholarship

Since the invention of artificial light, people have been working, studying, and playing for longer hours than ever before. They are also sleeping less as a result. This article examines the impact of sleep deprivation on people generally, and specifically on college students. Students accrue a large sleep debt that impairs their ability to function adequately. Students suffering from sleep deprivation can be as impaired as if they are drunk. They suffer damage to their minds and bodies. Adequate sleep can repair this damage, but with the many demands on college students, they may be unlikely to be able to …

More Than Fun And Games: Changing Library Perceptions Through Outreach Efforts, Maureen Rust, Elizabeth Brown

Library Scholarship

Academic libraries are beginning to devote more resources to library outreach as a means of conveying the unit’s relevancy to its campus constituents. Various methods of outreach include student engagement activities, embedded librarian liaisons within campus-wide departments, community programming, often in partnership with other campus units, and increased library instruction in University 101 courses. How effective are these methods of heightening the library’s campus profile? Does the return on investment warrant the resources expended on these programs? This study investigates campus perceptions of the target library. Since instituting its formal embedded librarian program in 2013, hiring two tenure-track faculty specializing …

Creating A Town Library Team: Collaborative Projects Between Public, School, And Academic Librarians, Maureen Rust

Library Scholarship

Library outreach, especially at the public and academic levels, is not a new concept. In the current climate of library budget cuts, instantaneous information, and readily available nonauthoritative sources, librarians, library staff, and library directors are making it a priority to educate their communities on the benefits of and accessibility to quality library resources. Collaboration between different types of libraries is also not uncommon. Partnerships between public and school libraries assist in coordinating information literacy curricula, promoting reading programs and providing access to materials and resources. This article encourages pushing those boundaries even further out to include academic libraries, thereby …

A Statistical Approach To Assessing Research Guide Use At Central Washington University, Mattias Olshausen Jan 2018

A Statistical Approach To Assessing Research Guide Use At Central Washington University, Mattias Olshausen

Library Scholarship

Much of the existing literature on library research guides, specifically those created using the ubiquitous LibGuides platform, expresses doubt that guides of a subject or topical variety are being used by students to an extent that justifies their creation and maintenance. Guides designed to be used in the context of particular courses are held to be more worthwhile, as they tend to experience more site traffic. This wisdom is tested using data generated by LibGuides’ internal Statistics tool for the Central Washington University library guides in the 2017 calendar year. The metric of asset clicks to page views is used …

Library orientations continue to excite, or plague, instruction librarians everywhere. Reaching first year students early can preempt academic heartache and research woes, yet the question of “what students really need” continues to evolve. This article presents a case study of a large-scale implementation of library orientations. The main issue addressed in this article involves a systematic review of students’ post-instruction responses and assessment of their learning. Related elements mentioned in this article include: interdepartmental participation; curriculum design; and instructional technology. While this implementation may not be appropriate for all academic libraries, its components may offer ideas for augmenting existing programs …
