If intentional, college students in campus jobs can develop professional skills valued in the post-college workforce. However, many students are not likely to realize the potential of their experience without advisement or instruction that teaches them how to reflect on experience and articulate its value, usually in the form of a resume or in an interview. This study examines the value of three workshops to help students reflect on their development of NACE career readiness competencies as a result of their library work experience. Improving Disability Inclusion Through Professional Development, Carli Spina

Building a shared understanding of the importance of disability inclusion and the concrete steps everyone at the library can take towards this goal, is an important first step towards improving services for disabled patrons and the work environment for disabled employees. Offering training on these specific topics can jumpstart this activity at virtually any library. Guided by existing research in the field, this article offers concrete guidance on creating and offering this training at libraries to improve disability inclusion in the community.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper describes the process of developing training for student employees at a reference desk in which students assist peers and others in the community with research help.

Design/methodology/approach

This case study details the process as well as the challenges in developing training that is helpful for student employees in performing day-to-day tasks at a reference desk and incorporates diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) and high-impact practices (HIPs).

This article provides lessons learned through four cycles of the Tribal Digital Stewardship Cohort Program at Washington State University’s Center for Digital Scholarship and Curation. The author coordinated the hybrid online and in-person training program from 2015-2020, focused on the unique needs of staff at Indigenous archives, libraries, and museums at the beginning of digital projects with unique access considerations. This study explores the extent of contribution of digital libraries to poverty alleviation of rural communities through skill acquisition training in Rivers State. The study was guided by one research question and a null hypothesis. The descriptive survey research was adopted. The sample size of 236 was drawn from the population of 2,355 registered learners from 12 registered vocational education centres using the convenience sampling technique. Data collecting instrument was the researchers’ structured questionnaire which was face validated by three experts. In spring 2022, Furman University Libraries piloted an innovative program that provided student workers with foundational knowledge of digital accessibility concepts and facilitated their development of skills in creating, remediating, and checking the accessibility of Word and PDF documents. This article describes the pilot program in-depth, including set-up, costs, implementation, and results.

This study seeks to assess the user frequency and impact of ICT on the performance of the User Services Division, with specific insight on the Circulation, Reference and Instruction Units of the Forde Library. The impact of ICT was measured using cluster-based sampling given to 340 undergraduate students, with a return rate of 62% - 211 students. The analysis revealed a significant lack of awareness and usage of the ICT offerings. Exceptions to low usage and awareness were the OPAC and the Library’s Website. This study investigated motivational variables and staff productivity among library staff in Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO). The study investigated the various levels of motivational variables and staff productivity and their relationships between the variables. The study adopted a correlational study. The population of the study consisted 106 library staff made up of professionals and para professionals. The instrument used for data collection was the rating scale. Learning During A Pandemic: The Impact Of Digital Badges On Staff Training, Jennifer Wright

During the pandemic, the Spartanburg County Public Libraries implemented a new learning management system with a digital badging component. The digital badges were enthusiastically received by staff and increased training completion rates significantly. Even without an LMS, other libraries can create badging for continuing education using a variety of online resources. Digital badging is an important motivational tool to use for continuing education, especially as training goes virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Highly qualified and sufficient numbers of human resource are an essential element for public libraries to successfully continue services towards the nation. Therefore, this study examines the demographic profiles, skills and training needs of public library human resources in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. A survey strategy was adopted using a self-administrated questionnaire distributed among all the staff members of the public libraries in the Eastern Province, Sri Lanka. Once More, With Feeling: A Case Study In Emotional Intelligence Testing Of Library Staff, Jennifer Wright

Emotional intelligence is key to employee success, yet many libraries do not consider EI in training. 46 library staff completed the Emotify test and a survey assessing their performance. Staff in leadership roles tended to score higher and rate their EI knowledge higher. Staff with lower scores tended to assess the test as not useful. More EI training is needed for nonsupervisory staff, and library administrations should encourage EI training for all staff.

Purpose The library orientation session is an important marketing tool because it offers the first opportunity for library staff to connect with new clients (Craft and Ballard-Thrower, 2011; Rhoades and Hartsell, 2008). Florence County Library System created and implemented a continuing education program called TLC@FCLS. The process began in 2016 when a new position was created, Training and Outreach Coordinator. The person hired researched programs and training providers creating a program that is meeting the needs of its staff and customers.
