At Cleveland State University, the library collaborates with faculty and departments on projects such as:
- capturing and sharing conferences;
- publishing scholarly journals; and
- creating and disseminating open educational resources.
These endeavors have led to additional opportunities in other areas, such as working with students and with the greater Cleveland community. In this webinar, Barbara Loomis, Project Coordinator, Marsha Miles, Digital Initiatives Librarian, and Theresa Nawalaniec, Sciences and Engineering Librarian, at Cleveland State’s Michael Schwartz Library will discuss their work with faculty and departments and the other projects that these have often led to.

Open Educational Resources (OERs) are gaining traction as students and faculty search for affordable, open access alternatives for learning resources. Find out how one public university library took advantage of the push for OERs and enthusiasm after a library-sponsored OER workshop to publish an open access textbook. Digital scholarship of the 21st century transcends institutions and borders with its freedom from print and physical locations. This case study reviews aspects of establishing a sustainable digital scholarship center, supporting open access through the institutional repository (K-State Research Exchange - K-REx) and an open access publishing platform (New Prairie Press – NPP) along with other outreach efforts. The Center for the Advancement of Digital Scholarship (CADS) at K-State Libraries serves our campus community, but digital scholarship extends K-State's impact far beyond Manhattan, Kansas. For undergraduate and graduate students aiming to transition into formalized researcher roles, learning the steps of the publication process can be difficult and unclear. Even with sound advice from mentor faculty members, learning academic publishing practices many times relies heavily on word-of-mouth and unwritten rules. Using a modified version of content submission and peer-review options within the institutional repository, Valparaiso University’s Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources (CCLIR) formed partnerships to teach these emerging scholars about the steps in the publication and conference presentation processes by mimicking professional submission and revision practices online. In 2015, the researchers surveyed URPDs and librarians nationally and faculty at USU about their thoughts on the role of student research in institutional repositories (IRs). All three groups recognize the benefits of making undergraduate research available in IRs. Yet, while the benefits to students, departments, and institutions as a whole are widely recognized, survey respondents also noted concerns about making this work openly available. Survey results also indicated the need for better communication and collaboration among these various campus entities.

In March 2015, CUNY Libraries launched an open access institutional repository, CUNY Academic Works, to collect and provide public access to the intellectual output of the students, faculty, and staff at the City University of New York. This presentation details a collaborative model in which the Office of Library Services at the Central Office partners with libraries at each of CUNY’s campuses to adopt more open practices.

Traditional collection development strategies may not be sufficient to effectively expand the use of a digital library or repository. Librarians working on FRASER, a digital library of economic history that is both a subject and institutional repository, have developed a cyclical strategy of user-responsive collection development. Collections developed in response to stakeholder needs include materials on historic responses to mortgage defaults during the Great Depression, and on the causes of historic panics and depressions, which grew out of the research priorities of policymakers and economists during the financial crisis of 2007. While a primary strategy of scholarly communication initiatives has been to encourage faculty participation in institutional repositories (IRs), with some process and workflow customization, IR participation can be successfully extended to undergraduate students, with benefits to both the student and institution. Drawing observations from the University of New Hampshire Library's work collecting undergraduate honors theses and other student research, this article discusses customization strategies for creating an effective workflow for student self-deposit using an iterative, feedback-based approach, and the benefits, challenges,and potential concerns of encouraging undergraduate participation in institutional repositories.

Touro College Libraries Publications and Research
Touro Scholar, the institutional repository (IR) of the Touro College and University System (TCUS) and New York Medical College (NYMC), officially launched in April 2016, utilizing bepress’s Digital Commons repository platform.The IR is an online archive of scholarly output of an institution –in this case TCUS and NYMC. After assessing institutional knowledge of the scholarly benefits of depositing work in the repository, the libraries planned to create a concrete game plan to establish buy-in to Touro Scholar. Handouts, presentations, customized guides, liaison outreach, tutorials, and webinars were proposed methods of advertising the repository.

INTRODUCTION Traditional assessment of ways in which open access initiatives and institutional repositories have provided a return on investment normally use pragmatic measures such as download counts and citation benefits. This pragmatic approach misses out on the powerful altruistic impact of improving access to international and/or marginalized communities. Using a frame of social justice, this article considers the importance of developing altruistic measures of repositories, particularly for institutions with missions specifically related to social justice and related themes. This research project examines the use of institutional repositories (IRs) by academic and research institutions in the Czech Republic. Six Czech institutional repositories are examined in context with the open access (OA) movement in the US and Europe in order to identify what goals have been achieved, what challenges lie ahead, and how the IR functions within the academic ecosystem. IR development in the Czech Republic has been driven by a government statute to provide electronic access to theses and dissertations (ETDs), yet five out of the six IRs hold more content than ETDs alone. Establishing institutional repositories (IRs) and encouraging supportive faculty participation can be daunting. Gaining access to scholarly publica- tions and other products that students produce, especially undergraduate researchers, can be an even more challenging task. Many IRs contain gradu- ate theses and dissertations as well as undergraduate honors theses and the abstracts of work that students present at student research events or con- ferences. There has been a dramatic rise in the number of law libraries managing institutional repositories for their law schools. In 2011, there were some 30 law schools with such repositories; now, 80 of the top 100 law schools have their own or participate in a university-wide repository wherein the law school has an identifiable, school-specific collection or community. This article discusses a survey of the of the top 101 law schools, in hopes of facilitating an understanding of the breadth of material to be found in law school institutional repositories.
