Disciplinary Differences And Scholarly Literature: Discovery, Browsing, And Formats, Chad E. Buckley, Rachel E. Scott, Anne Shelley, Cassie Thayer-Styes, Julie A. Murphy

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

This study reports faculty experiences regarding the discovery of scholarly content, highlighting similarities and differences across a range of academic disciplines. The authors interviewed twenty-five faculty members at a public, high-research university in the Midwest to explore the intersections of discovery, browsing, and format from diverse disciplinary perspectives. Although most participants rely on similar discovery tools such as library catalogs and databases and Google Scholar, their discovery techniques varied according to the discipline and type of research being done. Browsing is not a standard method for discovery, but it is still done selectively and strategically by some scholars. Journal articles …

Beyond Misinformation: The Misrepresentation And Misappropriation Of Research, Winn W. Wasson Sep 2023

Beyond Misinformation: The Misrepresentation And Misappropriation Of Research, Winn W. Wasson

Libraries' and Librarians' Publications

The contemporary information landscape has produced numerous incidents of researchers having their research misunderstood, misrepresented, or misappropriated—or worse, being subjected to intimidation and harassment—by individuals or groups who seek to cherry-pick evidence in support of ideological agendas or who wish to suppress evidence that counters those same agendas. While the covid-19 pandemic elevated these tactics in their frequency, visibility, and intensity, this phenomenon did not start or end with the pandemic. To help prepare current and future researchers for the possibility that their research might be misrepresented, misappropriated, or politicized in other ways by ideologically motivated individuals or groups, Syracuse …

Lived Experiences Of Academic Librarians Of Color: A Bibliography, Jody Condit Fagan Jun 2023

Lived Experiences Of Academic Librarians Of Color: A Bibliography, Jody Condit Fagan

Libraries

The scholarship in this bibliography offers wisdom for all academic library workers about the experiences of academic librarians of color. My initial purpose in exploring the literature was to combat my own ignorance and to help me be a better colleague to non-white librarians in predominantly white academic institutions. These works also inform diversity, equity, and inclusion programming in academic libraries, especially when primarily theory-based approaches might fall flat for a given audience.

I have tried to provide links to open access full-text where possible. Where a book chapter has no open access online, I provide a link to the …

Beyond Misinformation: Educating Our Campuses About The Misrepresentation And Misappropriation Of Research, Winn W. Wasson

Libraries' and Librarians' Publications

The contemporary information landscape has produced numerous incidents of researchers having their research misrepresented or misappropriated—or worse, being subjected to intimidation and harassment—by individuals or groups who seek to cherry-pick evidence in support of ideological agendas or who wish to suppress evidence that counters those same agendas. While the COVID-19 pandemic has elevated these tactics in their frequency, visibility, and intensity, this phenomenon is by no means unique to the pandemic. Medievalists and Classicists have seen their research become politicized by white supremacists, and historians and archaeologists of ancient India have had to push back against religious nationalist narratives that …

To Open Or Not To Open: Exploring Factors Influencing Faculty Engagement, Jessica Kirschner, Jose Alcaine, Sergio Chaparro, Nina Exner, Hillary Miller, Preeti Kamat

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Open practices enable increased access to scholarly outputs by removing financial, legal, and technological barriers. However, widespread faculty engagement is still low. Our interdisciplinary team undertook a pilot study to identify those barriers and evaluate their relative influence on faculty decisions to either publish in an open access journal or customize or create an open educational resource (OER). This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed method research design, featuring a web-based survey and follow-up interviews and focus groups to elaborate on responses. The team hopes to use the analyzed data to identify and recommend potential pathways to increase faculty engagement …

Promoting Open Access Journals And Open Data To Your Scholarly Community For Maximum Impact, Barbara M. Pope

Faculty Submissions

Open access journals and open data provide researchers with information that would otherwise be behind a paywall. Both are growing exponentially and are widely used and cited by scholars. However, not all open access journals are respected, peer reviewed publications and should be evaluated prior to submitting research. Open data repositories allow researchers to deposit their data to promote it and make it available for others to access and use. Getting the word out about scholarly research is fundamental to other researchers to access it, and augments the possibility of citations and altmetrics scores. Come to this presentation to hear …
