Digital scholarship of the 21st century transcends institutions and borders with its freedom from print and physical locations. This case study reviews aspects of establishing a sustainable digital scholarship center, supporting open access through the institutional repository (K-State Research Exchange - K-REx) and an open access publishing platform (New Prairie Press – NPP) along with other outreach efforts. The Center for the Advancement of Digital Scholarship (CADS) at K-State Libraries serves our campus community, but digital scholarship extends K-State's impact far beyond Manhattan, Kansas. Social Explorer is a mapping and data visualization program that creates custom maps, reports, and presentations from a wide array of survey sources, including the U.S. census, the American Community Survey, FBI Uniform Crime Reports, and some international sources such as the World Bank’s development indicators. Though most of its underlying data are published free of charge by nonprofit and government agencies, Social Explorer adds interpretative value by turning complex data into visual abstractions that aid comprehension. Currently located on the Library’s 2nd floor, it will soon move and become integrated with the library’s reference service. Researchers increasingly need to integrate the disposition, management and curation of their data into their current workflows. However, it is not yet clear to what extent faculty and students are sufficiently prepared to take on these responsibilities. This paper articulates the need for a data information literacy program (DIL) to prepare students to engage in such an “e-research” environment. Assessments of faculty interviews and student performance in a geoinformatics course provide complementary sources of information, which are then filtered through the perspective of ACRL’s information literacy competency standards to produce a draft set of outcomes for a data information literacy …

Beginning in 2011, there have been several policy changes directly affecting the management, preservation, and accessibility of publically-funded research and resulting research data in the United States. In January 18, 2011 the National Science Foundation (NSF) required data management plans to be submitted with all grant proposals. On February 22, 2013, the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the President of the United States extended a similar requirement to all federal agencies who have a research and development budget of more than $100 million. The Purdue University Research Repository (PURR, http://research.hub.purdue.edu) uses HUBzero to provide a research collaboration and data management solution for campus researchers. The National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and other funding agencies have begun requiring that researchers describe in their grant proposals how they will manage and share the data that will be produced in their research. Purdue researchers can include PURR in their data management plans, invite collaborators to work with them in private projects on PURR, and publish datasets that can be cited using Digital Object Identifiers (DOI). As the digital humanities mature, their scholarship is taking on many characteristics of the sciences, becoming more data-intensive, information-intensive, distributed, multi-disciplinary, and collaborative. While few scholars in the humanities or arts would wish to be characterized as emulating scientists, they do envy the comparatively rich technical and resource infrastructure of the sciences. The interests of all scholars in the university align with respect to access to data, library resources, and computing infrastructure.
