What stereotypes about working parents exist within the culture of academic libraries? In what ways are working mothers and fathers impacted by these stereotypes? How can institutions work to challenge these stereotypes and provide support for academic librarians who are balancing career advancement and family obligations? These are the three primary questions this panel will seek to address as part of “Recasting the Parentative: Seeking balance amidst the busyness.” Four panelists will discuss the preliminary results of a study of academic librarian-parent stereotypes and how those stereotypes affect academic library work. Conducting copyright clearance and ingesting appropriate versions of faculty publications can be a labor intensive and time consuming process. At Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a medium-size, private institution, the Digital Library Program (DLP) had been conducting copyright clearance one publication at a time. This meant that it took an enormous amount of time from start to finish to review and process the list of publications on a given faculty member’s CV. In October 2016, the Digital Program Librarian learned about the automated workflow developed by librarians at University of North Texas and decided to give it a try. At this …

LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations
Successful library outreach at Loyola Marymount University would be impossible without students. Whether it’s designing an event poster, conducting community tours, spreading information via word-of-mouth, or creating content for social media, students are involved at every level of our programming and outreach efforts. This presentation will explore some of the successes (and failures) of integrating students as employees and volunteers to help promote the college library. By trusting students to carry the message of the library into the campus community, this presentation will illustrate how outreach teams can develop more efficient, organic, and creative marketing strategies.

Creative, interdisciplinary partnership and collaboration with university faculty is an essential function of every academic library, whether for course design and integration of information literacy in the curriculum, strategically building the library collections, or designing programming for the community. Scholarly communication issues, such as access, research, and the promotion of scholarly communities are at the core of university libraries’ values. This session will demonstrate how to put the values of librarianship into practice at your institution by addressing the publishing needs of your faculty. At Loyola Marymount University, a medium-size, private institution, three librarians were tasked to assist faculty in the publishing process, in particular, help faculty choose credible and reliable journals in which to publish. This session will outline difficulties encountered with publishing by faculty, the case for the library’s involvement, and techniques to promote scholarly publishing. By …

Start-up culture is changing the way we contextualize the future of libraries. It asks us to reconsider what we traditionally understand to be best practices for organizational structure, innovative work, marketing, and communication. Most importantly, it has redefined the role of the leader who, rather than being the person at the top of the org chart, is a person who can lead through what he or she builds. We call this person the Maker/Leader. In this session, we answered the questions: “What is a Maker/Leader?” and “How can we lead from all levels within our organization but especially through what …

This presentation offers a case study of how one library’s assessment of data
gathered from its public service desk led to changes and improvements in service. The William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) recorded all of the questions and answers asked at its Information Desk from Fall 2009 to the present using the Gimlet (http://gimlet.us) electronic question tracking system. A content analysis was performed on the data that led to advancements in signage and a new knowledge base of FAQ’s. In addition, new services were implemented related to technology and research that addressed user needs.
