The Potential Of Partnerships, Marilyn S. Billings

This webinar will use the University of Massachusetts‘ institutional repository as a case study to explore how the new digital repository service has affected the way librarians envision our place in the future of the academy, how the academy is changing its view of the library’s role, new tools and skills that we are developing to fulfill this service, and new partnerships that we have created and fostered to exploit this new vision. We hope to foster discussion and provide insights and opportunities for further exploration of how the role of libraries as publishers enables us to be key partners …

Library As Publishing Agent: Exploring New Roles, Marilyn S. Billings
Library As Publishing Agent: Exploring New Roles, Marilyn S. Billings
Marilyn S. Billings
Academic libraries of all sizes can and must strategically position themselves as campus publishers. One means of doing this is to implement an Institutional Repository, providing opportunities to showcase senior theses, dissertations, award-winning papers, and student and faculty peer-reviewed journals. The Academic Librarians Section (ALS) presented Marilyn Billings from UMass Amherst to explain how this works in her library.

For decades, the Codes of Fair Information Practice have served as a model for data privacy, protecting personal information collected by governments and corporations. But professional data management standards such as the Codes of Fair Information Practice do not take into account a world of distributed data collection, nor the realities of data mining and easy, almost uncontrolled, dissemination. Emerging models of information gathering create an environment where recording devices, deployed by individuals rather than organizations, disrupt expected flows of information in both public and private spaces. We suggest expanding the Codes of Fair Information Practice to protect privacy in …

Library News for the Friends of the UMass Amherst Libraries
Message from Jay:
Since Issue 36 (Fall/Winter 2008) of News for the Friends of the UMass Amherst Libraries, we have endured what seemed to be an exceptionally long and sun-less winter in Amherst. Or, maybe the economic news just made it feel exceptionally long and sun-less. With the flowers beginning to blossom in the Du Bois Library Courtyard, I am encouraged by this quotation from Bo Bennett (author of the 2004 book entitled Year to Success): “As sure as the spring will follow the winter, prosperity and economic growth will follow recession.” This spring has been exceptional as you will …

Library News for the Friends of the UMass Amherst Libraries
Message from Jay:
In the last issue of this newsletter, we announced, with the support of Chancellor Robert C. and Sabine Holub, the beginning of the History of the Book Teaching Collection. The idea originated from a real need to support faculty in English, Art, History, and other fields who teach courses related to the history of the book. I appealed to you to “write a check” or “get that Gutenberg Bible out of the attic.” Not surprisingly, many of you did “write a check” – and we greatly appreciate that. Barbara Parker, on the other hand, got the proverbial …
