Currere As A Method For Critical Reflection In The Profession Of Academic Librarianship, Richard A. Stoddart Dec 2015

Currere As A Method For Critical Reflection In The Profession Of Academic Librarianship, Richard A. Stoddart

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Academic librarianship has an intimate association with narratives and stories from their traditional role in curating, caring for, and making collections accessible. Librarians also experience the intricacies and challenges of narrative inquiry through the qualitative research they undertake, oral histories they gather, reflective teaching practices they facilitate, and oral-traditions they interact with. Despite these intersections with reflection and narratives, academic librarianship, and library sciences as a whole, have not fully incorporated their own narratives within their practices. Academic librarianship has the ability but not the spaces to critically reflect in a holistic manner. Shadiow (2013) encourages us all to “recall, …

Welcoming Our Newest Neighbors – Idaho's Refugees, Elizabeth Ramsey, Kamal Rizal

Elizabeth Ramsey

Each year more than 1,000 refugees from nations all over the world are resettled in Boise and Twin Falls. This presentation looks at who these refugees are, how they came to Idaho, and the challenges they face in their new life. Through increased awareness of these new community members, we might better position ourselves and our libraries to assist them with their transitions to life as American citizens.

Boise State Data Management Needs Report, Michelle Armstrong, Megan Davis, Margie Ruppel

Data Management Services

To ensure compliance and to achieve greater value for the research sponsored by the University and outside funders, researchers need to take an active part in the management of the data they produce. Albertsons Library, in coordination with University units such as the Office of Sponsored Programs and the Office of Information Technology, is well-positioned to play an integral role in educating researchers and providing support on issues related to data management.

Albertsons Library established a working group in early 2014 dedicated to learning about data management issues and becoming involved in the University’s research data management activities. In order …

Developing A Data Narrative: Analyzing Trends In An Academic Interlibrary Loan Department, Heather Grevatt Jul 2015

Developing A Data Narrative: Analyzing Trends In An Academic Interlibrary Loan Department, Heather Grevatt

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Between 2010 and 2015 interlibrary loan request rates at Albertsons Library at Boise State University were observed to be in decline. This study details the efforts to explore this trend and determine a cause using existing data available through the OCLC Atlas ILLiad Web Reports interface. A simple, but effective method to analyze these substantial reports is presented and practical examples of analysis conducted at Albertsons Library are discussed. By looking at factors such as usage patterns, new user registrations, and cancelation language, the decrease in borrowing and lending requests was confirmed and attributed primarily to decreases in graduate student …

Translating Failure Into Success, Deana Brown, Elizabeth Ramsey Jan 2015

Translating Failure Into Success, Deana Brown, Elizabeth Ramsey

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Failure plays a key part in our professional and personal development, but traditionally many of us have been inclined to sweep our failures under the rug. Librarian and blogger Steven Bell posits that perhaps we are embarrassed at our failures, instead of recognizing that sharing our blunders can be an opportunity to celebrate our creativity (2010). Some brave souls are doing just that, such as the librarians who are sharing their failures through Twitter, using the hashtag #libraryfail. An enormously popular website has grown through shared failures, CakeWrecks (http://www.cakewrecks.com/). And a meme has been making the rounds on the internet …

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the use of library resources and services by degree-seeking older adult students (aged 50 years and over) and it is driven by the role of libraries in serving this often overlooked student population. Older adult students bring many benefits to the life of college campuses; nevertheless, many of these students also face challenges in meeting their information needs in academic libraries.

Design/methodology/approach – The authors surveyed degree-seeking older adult students at a comprehensive metropolitan university in the western USA. Surveys were distributed to 579 students enrolled in the spring semester …

Grassroots Outreach To Foster A Diverse Community, Elizabeth Ann Ramsey Jan 2015

Grassroots Outreach To Foster A Diverse Community, Elizabeth Ann Ramsey

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This exploration of an academic library’s outreach efforts presents a broad overview of a range of initiatives aimed at fostering interaction with library staff and resources. These efforts are put forth by a variety of contributors from throughout the library’s staff without a management mandate or day-to-day control. Although these grassroots outreach efforts cost little to nothing, they still act to effectively inculcate a campus-wide perception of the library as a forward-thinking, inclusive and supportive institution while generating a welcoming atmosphere for diverse users. This atmosphere in turn fosters a learning and research community that sees the library as an …

Fitting A Round Peg Into A Square Hole: Dickeson’S Academic Program Prioritization And Libraries, Tracy Bicknell-Holmes

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the 2013–2014 fiscal year, Boise State University underwent a Program Prioritization Process (PPP) adapted from Robert Dickeson’s Prioritizing Academic Programs and Services: Reallocating Resources to Achieve Strategic Balance. The review was mandated by the Idaho State Board of Education (SBOE) for public higher education institutions statewide. The SBOE required a review of all programs including the library. Programs in this case were defined by the SBOE as including “any activity or collection of activities that consumes resources (dollars, people, time, space, equipment).” When beginning this project, Boise State’s Albertsons Library had difficulty finding information on other libraries that …
