Graduate student enrollment is increasing and academic librarians must support this diverse group. How do grad students approach research? What are their stumbling blocks? What do they need from us in order to succeed? We spoke to graduate students in the social sciences and have uncovered the answers to these questions. The results of our research have both informed and streamlined our instruction practice. Find out what our grad students wish all academic librarians knew about them!

The Secrets Of Girl Detectives, Patricia Bravender
Patricia Bravender

To Chat Or Not To Chat: That Is The Question, Patricia Bravender, Colleen Lyon, Anthony Molaro
Patricia Bravender
In the midst of an economic crisis, libraries must continue to provide essential services with fewer staff and resources. Is online chat one of these essential reference services, and, if so, are the reference skills of a librarian necessary to answer the majority of chat questions? Should librarians provide chat reference no matter what the cost? This program will present an analysis of one academic library's chat reference service for two years. It will also detail the creation of a chat reference service at a public library based on the results of this study.

Making Reference Service Count: Collecting And Using Reference Service Statistics To Make A Difference, Judith Garrison
Judith Garrison
The Association of Research Libraries requirements for quantifying reference services are inadequate for a complete and accurate reflection of the complex nature of modern reference services. Using resources at hand, a medium-size academic library created an online system to collect, store, analyze, and use reference statistics. Information is entered at the point of service in a Web-based interface located on the computer desktop of each librarian. When record keeping and reporting processes were customized, automated, and made accessible to librarians, the data collected proved invaluable in tracking trends in reference service, monitoring library initiatives, and providing reference librarians information for …
