The rapidly expanding digital library network Crisis, Tragedy and Recovery (CTR) was funded in 2009 by the National Science Foundation through a three year grant. CRT captures and stores information for spontaneous events so users can access, search, analyze, and study these collections and learn from events and tragedies that happen around the world and across cultures and languages.
The panel will discuss the need for this distributed digital library and the project’s objectives, as well as some of the challenges faced. Topics will include lessons learned, best practices, and the connections between automated text mining, storytelling technologies, expert recommendations, …

Since 1997, the Mulford Health Science Library at the University of Toledo Health Science Campus (formerly the Medical College of Ohio) has been offering a 3-credit-hour elective course for 4th year medical students. The goal of the course is to provide students with skill sets that are important for them to develop as current students and future health care practitioners. It has been the goal of the library to constantly update course content that would be relevant to the students and to seek innovative course delivery methods to enhance the students’ learning experience. USU faculty and northern Utah K-12 teachers and library media specialists talk about how to identify and integrate digital primary sources such as photographs, letters, diaries, interviews and more into the curriculum to create engaging lessons. Digital resources such as the Library of Congress' American Memory, Mountain West Digital Library, and Utah Digital Newspapers, as well as tools for organizing the digital objects will be discussed.

Canadian graduate student enrollment is increasing and academic librarians must support this diverse group. How do graduate students approach research? What are their stumbling blocks? Getting Boys To Read: A Look At The Research And The Books They Love, Carrie Lynn Cooper Dean Of Libraries, Kathy Cox Watson

This session focuses on what the research says about males as readers and introduces the audience to great boy books and other types of text that appeals to male readers. The presenters have chosen titles from the Kentucky Bluegrass Awards program that are of interest to young male readers. Presenters also introduce and promote Kentucky’s children’s choice reading program, the Kentucky Bluegrass Awards. To misquote George Ella Lyon, the presenters woudl like to get boys to "shake hands with a book."
