Textbook Affordability Is A Social Justice Issue: How Open Textbooks Are Paving The Way To Equality In Higher Education, Sarah Appedu
Textbook Affordability Is A Social Justice Issue: How Open Textbooks Are Paving The Way To Equality In Higher Education, Sarah Appedu
All Musselman Library Staff Works
Textbook affordability is becoming a bigger and bigger problem for students. Access to textbooks is essential for students to be able to meet their learning needs and have equal opportunity to excel as their peers. Open Textbooks are one response to this issue, but while most library outreach is focused on faculty members, students are an underutilized voice in the open education conversation. This presentation aims to educate students on what open textbooks are, what their limitations are, and how all students can participate in advocating for more affordable course materials.

In fall 2017, we initiated a migration of the University of Western Ontario’s 32 library-hosted journals from the bepress Digital Commons platform to the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. This was a response to concerns expressed by librarians and journal editors regarding potential implications of Elsevier’s August 2017 acquisition of bepress, including the possibility that Elsevier might place ads on their journal pages or increase fees for journal-hosting services. Our goal was to mitigate those concerns by ensuring that Western Libraries’ journal platform remained as open and community-driven as possible. Because the migration coincided with a librarian taking on responsibilities …

Clemson University and the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) have collaborated since 2010 to develop the Open Parks Network, an open repository of over 230,000 digital objects and metadata records chronicling the diverse cultural and natural history of our nation’s parks, historic sites, and other protected areas. Initially funded by an Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant that ended in 2014, this joint effort to deliver wider public access to the unique resources located in NPS libraries, museums, and archives across the U.S. and territories is an intriguing case study in the dynamics of a relationship between …

Committing To The Non-Traditional: The Path To The Incorporation Of 3d Models In An Online Journal, Dillon Mark Wackerman, Robert Z. Selden Jr.
Fondren Library Research
In 2013 Dr. Robert Selden approached the Center for Digital Scholarship (CDS) at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) inquiring about the possibility of including interactive 3D models in a digital collection. Working with Dr. Selden, the CDS found a platform to which these models could be deposited and displayed. Concurrently, the CDS was actively promoting SFA’s institutional repository, SFA ScholarWorks. One guiding idea behind these IR-focused activities was the emphasis of the legitimacy of non-traditional works in respect to SFA ScholarWorks and the academic community as a whole. This idea and acceptance of the non-traditional was maintained as the …
Open Access Theses & Dissertations: Airing The Anxieties & Finding The Facts, Jill Cirasella
Open Access Theses & Dissertations: Airing The Anxieties & Finding The Facts, Jill Cirasella
Publications and Research
Writing a thesis or dissertation is hard, and now that most theses and dissertations are deposited and distributed electronically, graduating students face an additional complication: they must decide whether they want to make their dissertations immediately open access (OA), or, at universities that require OA, they must come to terms with the fact that their work will be OA. In this presentation, I survey and scrutinize the anxieties and myths surrounding OA theses and dissertations.

Open Access And Irs: Educating And Empowering The Campus Community, Adam N. Hess
Library Faculty Scholarship
With the trend moving toward universities developing their own institutional repositories (IRs), the need to educate and empower the campus to embrace this new space for publishing research has grown exponentially. This session will provide a background on open access and IRs, including the many benefits and complex issues, as well as an overview of the scholarly communication crisis and the importance of authors’ rights education. The session will go on to provide practical examples and guidance from several pilot projects launched at Arcadia University that emphasized open access education and participation.

Introducing Undergraduates To Open Access And The Power Of Collaboration Between Scholarly Communications And Instruction Librarians, Kristin Laughtin-Dunker, Annie Knight
Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials
Undergraduates are often left out of conversations surrounding open access. While they may not share the same concerns about publishing and prestige as faculty and graduate students, they do consume vast amounts of information, and thus can benefit just as much as those farther in their academic careers by knowing how to find, evaluate, and use open access resources. This presentation highlights a successful collaboration between the presenters in their respective roles as scholarly communications librarian and course developer to create and implement curriculum for a 3-unit information literacy course to teach undergraduate students about open access principles. Once the …

Panel title: Staffing a Library Publishing Program: The Whos, Hows, and Whens
Panel abstract: This session aims to address one of the most frequently raised concerns about library-led publishing: how to plan for staffing this new endeavor? The panel will discuss two inflection points in staff planning for library publishing: what it takes to get started (for a library that is just beginning to think about publishing), and what it takes to grow (for a library that has a few years of experience and wants to do more). It will also shed light on one of the least understood, and …

You Know What You Write, But Do You Know Your Rights? Understanding And Protecting Your Rights As An Author, Jill Cirasella
Publications and Research
When you publish a journal article, you sign a copyright or licensing agreement. Do you know what you’re agreeing to when you sign it?
Different journals have different policies: Some journals require you to relinquish your copyright. (You then have to ask permission or even pay to share your article with students and colleagues!) Some journals allow you to retain some rights (e.g., the right to post online). Some journals leave copyright in your hands. (You simply give the journal a non-exclusive license to publish the article.)
How can you find out a journal’s policy? How can you negotiate your …

Talking About Open Access: Smash And Subtler Tactics, Jill Cirasella
Publications and Research
This slideshow covers different ways of answering the question “Why open access?” It reviews the knee-jerk reactions many people have when they hear about open access, describes the many benefits of open access, invokes @openaccesshulk’s strategy of SMASH, and discusses what arguments work best with different populations (students, faculty, administrators, etc.). Finally, it addresses why librarians should try to talk about open access without resorting to constant use of the term “open access” and describes a few ways to sneak open access advocacy into other conversations.

Chapter One: A Small College Library Joins The Open Access Movement, Janelle L. Wertzberger
All Musselman Library Staff Works
The open access movement has been going strong for over a decade. Large research universities tend to have the oldest and most active programs. Their work is inspiring, but it can be challenging for librarians at smaller institutions to identify ways to contribute to the movement.
Gettysburg College launched its institutional repository in 2012. This presentation tells how we got started.

Open Access To Scholarly Articles: Good Policies Ensure Good Practices, Jill Cirasella

Open access (OA) to scholarly journal articles is now widely accepted as a good thing. However, it will not become the norm without policies promoting openness. This presentation looks at policies that ensure that hundreds of thousands of articles become OA every year.
Open Access To Scholarly Literature: Which Side Are You On?, Jill Cirasella
Open Access To Scholarly Literature: Which Side Are You On?, Jill Cirasella
Publications and Research
Open access (OA) to scholarly literature recently hit a major milestone: Half of all research articles published become open access, either immediately or after an embargo period. Are the articles you read among them? What about the articles you write? Are the journals to which you submit open-access friendly? What about the journals for which you peer review? Are there any reasons why the public should not have access to the results of taxpayer-funded research?
This presentation explains the motivation for OA, describes the details of OA, and differentiates between publishing in open access journals (“gold” OA) and self-archiving works …
